Charity Trustee Have you got experience as a senior leader in health, hospitals or social care? Would you like to use your experience to make a meaningful difference to unpaid carers across Surrey? Action for Carers Surrey is seeking a new trustee to join our Board. We are a dedicated, passionate charity determined to make a difference to young and adult carers across Surrey by providing advice, support and advocacy. With over 100,000 unpaid carers in Surrey, our work has never been more important. Our vision is that every unpaid carer in Surrey is heard, valued and supported. Who we’re looking for Following the retirement of a trustee with extensive knowledge and experience of Surrey County Council’s political, social and healthcare landscape, we are particularly keen to appoint a trustee with comparable senior level expertise. Most likely, this will have been obtained in an environment such as:
It may have been gained whilst in employment or in an elected role, either within the public or voluntary/charity sector. Potentially you may have gained this knowledge and understanding as a carer and user of these services. What you will bring
As a trustee, you will be collectively responsible for setting the charity’s strategy in line with its vision and for ensuring proper governance. Our board works in partnership with the CEO and senior leadership team as they deliver this strategy. Your background in health or social care will be influential and help to shape the future of ACS at this critical time. We are proud that a majority of our board have lived experience as an unpaid carer. Whilst not essential, any experience you may have currently or in the past, will strengthen the representation of carers on the board. Most vitally, you will have the opportunity to improve the lives of unpaid carers of all ages across Surrey. Previous trustee directorship experience is not required. In return You will be joining a dynamic and engaged board of trustees which has a good working relationship with an experienced and dedicated CEO. We have an induction programme which includes initial training and the opportunity to meet the trustees and key staff, and all our trustees are encouraged to undertake ongoing training. Trustees have the opportunity to mentor staff and participate in occasional short term working groups which comprise a mix of trustees and staff. This is a voluntary role, with reasonable expenses reimbursed. Open Country is a Charity that helps people with disabilities to access and enjoy the countryside. We are always looking for volunteers to support our conservation and gardening groups, walking group and our weekend outings.
- Conservation group meet on a Tuesday and is made up of adults with learning disabilities who carry out practical conservation tasks each week at various locations. We work with organisations like Yorkshire Wildlife Trust and RSPB. Tasks can include meadow creation, tree planting, pond maintenance and invasive species removal to name but a few.
- Walking group meet on a Thursday and is made up of adults with learning disabilities or sensory impairments. We walk between 5-7miles each week at different locations around Yorkshire and normally finish the walk with a pub or cafe stop.
- Gardening and arts group meet on a Friday, and is made up of adults with learning disabilities, where we learn about gardening and various natural craft like willow weaving. We also regulary work with organisations like the National Trust and the National Coal Mining Museum.
We also run weekend outings for people with all kinds of disabilities providing experiences and a chance to socialise and explore new places. Our activities range from a gentle amble round a country house and gardens, wildlife watching at a nature reserve to axe throwing and abseiling.
As a volunteer you would be helping our members stick together as a group, or carry out the conservation tasks, making sure they are happy and safe.
No experience is required, just a willingness to get stuck in! We will provide all relevant training for the role.
We meet at Thornes Park Nursery, Wakefield at 10am and head out in our accessible minibus to site.

When someone suffers a life-threatening injury, only our team can provide them with the help they need, performing innovative procedures like open chest surgery and blood transfusions at the roadside, saving lives where others can’t.
We can get there in time to make a difference thanks to our fleet of helicopters and rapid response cars. But we’re a charity, with 95 per cent of our funding reliant on donations.
