Our volunteer administrators are instrumental to all the work that we do across Hestia. You will have the opportunity to support staff with a wide range of desk-based and administrative tasks. These behind-the-scenes roles provide essential support in ensuring that those who we work with access the support they require to rebuild their lives beyond crisis.

What you will be doing

• To support with administration, texting and emailing information to service users, volunteers, and staff
• Support with updating and inputting data into spreadsheets
• Support with making phone calls to follow up and gather needed information.

Join our team of befrienders! You will support us to reach some of the most isolated adults in your community to reduce their feelings of loneliness, build friendships and provide support for mental wellbeing. You will support people to relight a spark to continue a hobby, interest or encourage them to explore and participate in new social activities.

Are you a qualified Yoga Instructor who would enjoy facilitating weekly sessions to help individuals with their general well-being. This is an opportunity for you to share techniques with others.

Practicing yoga has been shown to increase mindfulness not just in class session, but in other areas of a person's life.

What you will be doing

• Design session plans enabling all group members to increase fitness, suppleness and help them relax
• Teach the group yoga postures and breathing techniques which allow a range of mixed ages and abilities to participate
• Inspire and motivate people to attend and get involved in the group activities where possible and encourage the group to help design future sessions
• Keep a record of attendees, provide feedback and report any concerns to the staff team

Do you enjoy being outdoors and working with children? We’re looking for friendly, reliable volunteers to support weekly allotment sessions with primary school children. No gardening experience is required — just a positive attitude, a willingness to help, and an interest in nature and supporting young people.

Job Description

You will assist lead gardeners during 1-hour weekly sessions with children, helping them take part in planting and other simple gardening activities. The role also includes 30 minutes before the session to help set up and 30 minutes after to help tidy and pack away.

A DBS check and safeguarding training are required, and we will cover the full cost. We value consistency so children can build trusted, positive relationships with volunteers. You are welcome to volunteer for more than 2 hours per week if you wish.

Job Requirements

The Role

The Supporting Chapter Manager provides support to Chapter that are deemed to be struggling. They should assess chapters frequently to ensure they have a clear awareness of what a chapter requires support, in addition to input from other Trustees. They will then provide hands on support to the struggling chapters with focus on recruitment, events and costumes.

Description

Our small charity delivers awareness campaigns and a range of support services to patients, relatives, partners and carers who have been affected by a debilitating chronic condition; Complex Regional Pain Syndrome (CRPS). We are urgently looking for 2 experienced email marketing volunteers to join our communications team.

You will be a big link to our charity's clients who are vulnerable and isolated, to them learning more about events, our latest articles, fundraising events as well as ensuring they are aware of the services that we offer that be of help to them. You will also be helping us to raise awareness of this devastating chronic condition.

Even though we are a small organisation we have big ideas and having regular contact through emails and newsletters will show consistency and know they can rely on us to be there for them.

We would like the volunteer to help with:

• Email content: Develop our communication & marketing content calendar, write compelling regular email content, including calls for donations & support, that is relevant and has clear a call-to-action and high click through rates;
• Email content (membership): Create a regular email newsletter for our membership scheme
• Create a number of automated email series - for donors, members, fundraisers and more
• Newsletter strategy: Help us plan and articulate how we can use emails and newsletters to strengthen our organisation, motivate our supporters and communicate with our sponsors;
• Design and implement campaigns and promotional activity

What are you looking for in a volunteer?

We are looking for 2 volunteers who have:

• Strong writing and editing skills
• Good communicator
• Good computer skills and a willingness to be contacted via email and/or video chat

Roles available

• Course Marshals (10 people) – Support and encourage runners along the course and help keep everything running smoothly. Full briefing provided by the Reading Half Marathon team.
• Charity Tent & Cheer Team (4–6 people) – Welcome our runners, take photos, cheer them home and represent the Charlie Waller Trust in the Event Village.

About the event
This is an exciting new opportunity for us as we become a Bronze Charity Partner of the Reading Half Marathon for the first time. We have runners taking part on behalf of the Trust, and as part of our partnership we are providing volunteer course marshals. It’s a brilliant chance to raise our profile locally and support our amazing runners.

Other information

• Children are welcome to join the cheer team (as long as they’re with a responsible adult) to help shake instruments and hand out sweets.
• Course marshalling involves being on your feet and walking; charity tent roles can be seated.
• This is an outdoor event.

The Training Officer ensures volunteers receive engaging, high-quality training to prepare them for events. You’ll organise sessions, secure tutors and spaces, encourage attendance, and gather feedback to improve future training. This role is vital for volunteer development and maintaining Make a Smile’s professional standards.

The Events Officer oversees chapter events, ensuring they run smoothly from start to finish. You’ll manage event requests, coordinate volunteers, support Lead Volunteers, and follow up on post-event tasks such as social media, hours tracking, and costume returns. Strong organisation, communication, and teamwork skills are essential to keep events engaging and well-staffed.

The Vice President supports the President in leading the chapter, helping organise events, volunteers, and committee activities, and proactively seeking new opportunities. As the chapter’s second-in-command, you’ll provide guidance, assist with problem-solving, and help shape the direction of Make a Smile. The role is flexible and adaptable, allowing you to develop leadership skills, support the President, and maintain strong communication with the Board of Trustees. Strong initiative, organisation, and teamwork are key.

The Wellbeing Officer represents the voice of volunteers and helps ensure a positive, inclusive, and supportive chapter culture. You’ll provide a safe and approachable point of contact for volunteers, gather feedback, and raise concerns or suggestions with the committee where appropriate. The role involves developing a chapter wellbeing plan, promoting widening access, and creating a welcoming environment where volunteers feel heard and supported. You’ll also assist the President and Vice President with wider committee responsibilities.

The Secretary plays a key administrative role in keeping the chapter organised and running smoothly. You’ll manage documentation and records using OneDrive and Simvoly, take and upload meeting minutes, track action points, and follow up with committee members on progress. The role also involves supporting communications, helping respond to emails and messages, maintaining event records, and organising socials to strengthen team relationships. Strong organisation, attention to detail, and confidence using digital tools are essential.

The Fundraising Officer is responsible for generating vital income for Make a Smile. You’ll proactively identify and organise fundraising opportunities, complete the required paperwork, and ensure events run smoothly. Working closely with the Treasurer and committee, you’ll develop an annual fundraising plan, support local fundraisers, and build relationships with supermarkets and other organisations. The role is hands-on, creative, and key to helping the chapter meet its fundraising goals and maximise its impact.

The Chapter President leads and oversees the local chapter, with overall responsibility for its activities, compliance, and smooth day-to-day running. You’ll provide direction and support to your committee, chair meetings, and ensure volunteers, events, and fundraising are well managed. The role involves motivating the team, planning chapter development, and stepping in where needed to keep things on track. You’ll also liaise with the national Board of Trustees, keeping them informed of key decisions and changes. Strong leadership, organisation, and a passion for the charity’s mission are essential.
