About the Degrees Initiative

The Degrees Initiative is a UK-based NGO that builds the capacity of developing countries to evaluate solar radiation modification (SRM), a controversial proposal for reducing some impacts of climate change by reflecting sunlight away from the Earth. Degrees is neutral on whether SRM should ever be used, but we believe that developing countries should be empowered to conduct their own research and to play a central role in SRM discussions. The initiative has been working in different forms for over a decade, and our work receives worldwide coverage and widespread acclaim. 

The charity was founded in 2021, now has around 20 staff members and is growing. We seek a volunteer trustee with significant financial experience including an accounting qualification to join an existing five-person board to help guide a growing initiative that is changing the field of SRM.

This position offers a fantastic opportunity for the right candidate to apply their financial expertise in a high-profile governance role, shaping strategy and supporting a mission that empowers Global South researchers to lead in one of the world’s most important climate debates. 

Role 

The volunteer trustee will complement and further strengthen an existing five-person volunteer trustee board including the Chair & Treasurer. The role will entail strategic leadership, governance, and fiduciary responsibilities. Alongside the Treasurer they will predominantly be advising the Chief Operating Officer (COO) and the rest of the senior management team (the Chief Executive Officer and Chief of Staff) to ensure the robust financial health of the charity. This will include: 

• Maintaining an overview of the charity’s financial affairs by overseeing the annual financial planning and budgets proposed by the senior management team 

• Monitoring and evaluating financial progress against budgets and forecasts from staff reporting at quarterly board meetings, acting a voice of financial expertise during board discussions 

• Approving the audited annual accounts and financial statements presented by the senior management team alongside the rest of the board 

• Strategic input by reviewing risk assessments alongside financial implications and advising on the organisation of financial resources and reserves to support the long-term goals of the charity 

• Confirming transparency and accountability in financial operations, and that appropriate accounting procedures and controls are in place in addition to compliance with legal and regulatory requirements 

• Advising on how the charity can most effectively conduct its international work, especially providing grants to organisations in the Global South 

• Confirming that the charity has an appropriate investment policy, and that there is no conflict between any investment held and the aims and objects of the charity

• Sitting on any board sub-committees as required 

Overview

Julie’s Bicycle is seeking an outstanding Chair, Treasurer, and new Trustees to join our Board and help lead our pioneering not-for-profit organisation mobilising the arts and culture to take action on the climate, nature, and justice crisis.

Working closely with CEO and Founder Alison Tickell, Managing Director Laura Pando, and a committed team, our Board provides strategic vision, governance, and advocacy – championing the role of culture in creating a fair, sustainable future.

We are particularly keen to hear from candidates with experience in climate change, policy, diplomacy, or finance, and who share our commitment to justice, inclusion, and the power of culture to drive change.

Terms of Appointment

An initial three-year term. Board members may be re-appointed to the Board of Trustees up to a maximum of two terms.

Location

Hybrid. Board and Subcommittee meetings are held either in person (primarily in London or at venues across the UK) or remotely.

Remuneration

This is a voluntary, unpaid position. Reasonable expenses, such as travel costs, will be reimbursed where applicable.

Time Commitment

• Chair: 2-3 days per month
• Treasurer: 1-2 days per month
• Board members: 1-2 days per month

What we do

Our initiative leverages technology to connect global experts, researchers and volunteers with frontline African communities to drive meaningful change. We support Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs) and Community-Based Organizations (CBOs) by solving their operational, organizational development, and technical challenges, ensuring their growth and sustainability. In the process, we actively engage and mentor young Africans, equipping them with skills and experience as they work alongside us to address these challenges. The Role

We are seeking a new Chair of the Board to provide strategic leadership, ensure good governance, and support the long-term sustainability and growth of Filling Good. Key Responsibilities

Strategic Leadership

• Guide the Board in setting and reviewing strategic goals.

Share and Repair is a dynamic Charity Incorporated Organisation (CIO) dedicated to reducing carbon emissions, fostering cohesive communities, and promoting sustainable lifestyles. Since our inception we have grown into a vibrant community hub with 12 monthly repair cafes .

Operating from our Share and Repair hub in Bath, we run repair sessions, workshops, and community events. Join us to help empower individuals, reduce waste, and make a positive environmental impact.

As a Share and Repair trustee, you would be joining a talented board and supporting an outstanding team and army of volunteers. Key responsibilities would be:

• Oversee the presentation of budgets, internal management accounts and annual financial statements to the Board of Trustees.

Are you passionate about making a difference to communities that experience food insecurity and related health inequalities?We are looking for a dynamic, inspiring and innovative individuals to join our Board of Trustees to help steer Healthy Living Platform’s work through a range of activities that support food justice across Lambeth. 

At Healthy Living Platform we make it easier for local communities to lead healthier and more sustainable lives. Using a food ladder model, we focus on the following outcomes: 

• increasing access to affordable and nutritious food 

• increasing knowledge and skills to support healthy eating

For a small team of 6 paid staff we have a huge impact, supporting over 2,000 households every week through running the Surplus Food Hub and Pantries, with around 40 volunteers supporting our work including activities generated through our Community Kitchen. We are seeking a purpose-driven, experienced and visionary Chair of the Board of Trustees to lead Wildscreen into its next exciting chapter. The Chair will provide strategic leadership, governance, and support our small but mighty team to ensure the organisation continues to thrive and expand its influence within the international natural history media and environmental not for profit sectors. This role is crucial in guiding Wildscreen’s mission and vision, fostering strong relationships with stakeholders, and ensuring robust financial and operational health.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

• Leadership and Governance: Lead the Board of Trustees in ensuring Wildscreen has a clear strategic direction and uses its resources to effectively deliver its charitable objectives. Ensuring the organisation complies with legal and regulatory requirements the Board operates effectively and with high governance standards. Providing leadership and support and appraising the performance of the Chief Executive Officer and where appropriate, other members of the Executive Team. • Strategic Planning: Collaborate with the Board, Executive Team, and key stakeholders to develop and implement Wildscreen’ s strategic plan. Drive the organisation’s vision and objectives forward, ensuring alignment with its mission and values.
• Stakeholder Engagement: Act as an ambassador for Wildscreen, fostering strong relationships with key stakeholders, including funders, partners, education and community groups, and sector bodies.
• Financial Oversight: Work with the Board and Executive Team to ensure the financial stability and sustainability of the organisation. Oversee budgeting, financial planning, and risk management processes.
• Fundraising and Development: Support and guide fundraising initiatives, including identifying new opportunities and cultivating relationships with donors, sponsors, and funding bodies.
• Community and Inclusivity: Promote Wildscreen’s commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion. Encourage programmes and initiatives that engage with diverse audiences and reflect the community’s needs.

ESSENTIAL SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE

• Strategic Leadership: Demonstrable experience in a senior leadership or governance role within a complex organisation, preferably within the creative industries, environmental, purposedriven or not-for-profit sectors.
• Governance Expertise: Strong understanding of governance, with a track record of effectively chairing boards or committees and ensuring accountability and transparency.

We’re seeking enthusiastic and approachable Volunteer Community Leaders to champion cleaner waterways and inspire positive action. You’ll be a visible presence in the community - leading by example, motivating volunteers, and representing Planet Patrol at local events.

You will play a key role in encouraging people to get involved in our citizen-science-powered activities, from water quality testing to litter picks, helping us build robust data to advocate for a cleaner planet. By sharing feedback and local insights, you’ll also help shape future campaigns and amplify the voices of your community. 

We are a small, ambitious team, and you’ll become part of our national network of change-makers, striving for a world where all beings can enjoy our waterways, free from pollution. Key responsibilities

• Attend local community events to share Planet Patrol’s mission and opportunities available to take action through citizen science ~1 per month. 

• Inspire and encourage volunteers to get involved in our mission - whether that is our paddleboarding litter picks, our water testing programme, or by downloading the Planet Patrol app and logging litter finds! 

• Share feedback and impactful stories with the Planet Patrol team to help shape future campaigns and amplify the voices of our volunteers. 

• Advocate for change - act as a voice for your community by raising awareness and engaging with local powerholders on environmental issues.

• Build towards organising your own community events and working with the team to support with event logistics and coordination. 

Qualities & Skills

Essential

• Passion for environmental action and community involvement.

• Good knowledge of environmental initiatives in your area.

• Confident, friendly communicator - comfortable speaking publicly and encouraging participation in our litter picks and water testing activities. 

• Self-motivated and IT literate - comfortable staying in touch remotely.

• Organised and can manage time efficiently.

• Committed to ~2 hrs/week for at least 6 months.

Desirable

• Experience in public speaking or communications.

• Ability to use social media and capture content effectively.

Exciting opportunity as Chair of trustees of a small and dynamic arts and crafts re-use charity in SW London looking to take the charity forward and grow and diversify its income streams.The Chair will join an established and small board of trustees and must be experienced in leading a board in terms of strategy, risk and planning, financial governance, building positive relationships, one-to-one reviews with trustees to bring out the best in them, building the board and growing the charity's impact. 

The Chair will have a wide-ranging impact, shaping the charity's strategic direction and helping it achieve the charity's mission to promote artful re-use of waste materials diverted from landfiil and incineration for use with a wide range of beneficiaries for artistic, educational, recreational or therapeutic benefit throughout south-west London. Your leadership will ensure that the charity provides and extends its range of support and services to existing and future beneficiaries and maintains its role as an active participant in the circular economy.

Overview 

As an Image Analyst, you’ll play a vital role in preserving our environment by moderating the litter images uploaded to the Planet Patrol app. To date, our community has logged over 500,000 pieces of single-use litter, contributing to our open-source interactive database. Our data has been featured in media investigations (Channel 4 and ITV), published in academic journals (Stanton et al., 2022), and used to inform government consultations, enhancing both public and scientific understanding of environmental pollution.

For each image, we need to verify that the litter type, quantity, and brand have been recorded accurately - and we need your help.

At the heart of our work is robust, community-collected data. We are proud to have the world’s first reliable and freely available app dedicated to combating environmental pollution. Through the app, anyone can become a protector of our natural green and blue spaces through logging vital data on water quality and litter collected. 

Each piece of litter collected is photographed and recorded in the app, alongside vital information such as litter type, quantity, brand and location. This helps us to identify trends and pressure points in specific locations, helping to power our campaigning for positive change.

Who we are

A community-driven organisation, our mission at Remakery Oxford is to foster a circular economy approach to waste in Oxford. Through creativity, skill-sharing and collaboration, we transform waste into art and function, providing an antidote to fast fashion and single-use culture.

Our focus is to help shift mindsets around sustainability, consumption and top-down mass production.  Through workshops, talks and podcasts, we encourage experimentation, social innovation and education, driving forward the idea that anyone can curate art, function and fashion with minimal planetary impact.

Our next goal is to establish a studio for those who lack the space and tools to work independently. With the support of our volunteer team we hope to provide a collaborative space in exchange for skills sharing in the community.

- A variety of workshops (e.g., upcycled jewellery, jeans-to-totes, low-impact film development).

- Built a community of remakers and trash artists

We are keen to explore new activities, circularity at their core, that can maximise our impact in Oxford.

What we need help with

We have flexible volunteer opportunities for anyone who shares our passion for circularity and is willing to uphold our values. It may suit you if you work part time, are out of work, are retired, on parental leave or are a student. There's no minimum time commitment.

We are looking for volunteers in these areas:

Running Events - Creative types who want to run workshops and other events themed around circularity, reuse, repair and reimagination.

Marketing, Content & Outreach - Social Media, Creative Writing, Video Editing, Infographics, Event Promotion.

Organising Events - Planning, Promoting, Venues, Flyers, Coordinating attendance.

Community & Partnerships - University, Families, Schools, Artists & Makers, Corporate Outreach, Fundraising Support.

Tech & Digital - Website creation and management, eCommerce setup, launch and support.

Circular Projects - Local grower & composter roles, waste hub, circular systems experiments.

We have roles which can be handled remotely as well as in person.

• To have experience as a Research Assistant or Researcher or equivalent role in related areas

• Experience in qualitative research methods and secondary data analysis, quantitative experience a plus
