The Generation Trust, based at Guy’s Hospital in London, seeks new charity trustees to support its mission of advancing scientific research and translating discoveries into clinical practice.

The Generation Trust was created in 1982 with the aim of raising funds to invest in genetic research, with a particular focus on the work of expert scientists in the Department of Medical and Molecular Genetics at Guy’s Hospital, London. Initially the charity raised about £2m and it currently has reserves of £700k. The charity has provided early support for a number of projects leading to better understanding of a number of disabling and life changing conditions.

The science of genetics continues to make exciting and rapid advances in the knowledge of human disease, helping to inform diagnostic practice and to develop new treatments.

The Department at Guy’s has played a key role in helping to move scientific knowledge ‘from bench to bedside’ in the NHS, advancing new methods of preventing or treating a range of life-changing and disabling conditions in both children and adults.

Modern DNA sequencing techniques at Guy’s have advanced understanding of the molecular origins and characteristics of breast cancer, leukaemia, inflammatory bowel disease, psoriasis and Huntingdon’s Disease as well as some of the rarer genetic diseases in children.

Funds raised by The Generation Trust have been used to invest in the early careers of the Department’s brightest young scientists, in PhD students or post-doctoral fellows, in pilot studies to ‘prime the pump’ for successful major grant applications and occasionally in capital projects to enhance the facilities of this world class research centre.

At the end of 2023, the Trust had reserves of about £700,000. The founders of The Generation Trust now hope to find the next generation of charity trustees to succeed them. We aim to recruit a small group who between them will have an interest in or, at least, a curiosity about the development of health science, cell biology, bio-informatics, DNA sequencing and genome analysis.

To sustain and grow the Trust we would like to add some expertise in investment management, charity governance and, ideally, access to wider networks of potential financial support in the City of London and elsewhere.​​

Release Mates - Trustees

Release Mates is a growing team of prison leavers in recovery from addiction who now support other prison leavers in the immediate hours after their release. The organisation is converting from a CIC to a charity.

Release Mates is seeking 2 trustees to complete its inaugural board. This is an exciting opportunity to institute how Release Mates will grow and keep up with the demand for its service. You will be involved in creating positive opportunities for people who society has discarded.

​Lived experience or knowledge of the criminal justice system is preferred, but not essential. The successful applicants will assist the CEO in fundraising and ensuring financial matters are in order. ​

We are working in partnership with St John’s Winchester Charity, (SJW) which is now looking to recruit Trustees to join its Board of Trustees, which sets and approves the charity’s strategy.

SJW’s core mission is to help older people live well. It provides almshouse accommodation in central Winchester for about 105 older people with housing and other needs. It also supports older people in Winchester and the surrounding district to continue to live independently in their own homes for as long as possible; with its outreach services – Hand in Hand, established in 2018, and Dementia Support, established in 2022.

The role of Trustee can be enormously interesting, rewarding, and enjoyable. SJW is looking to appoint several new Trustees ls to join a lively, engaged, collegiate Board. It is particularly keen to hear from people who can bring the following skills and experience:

• Fundraising (including an understanding and appreciation of the use of social media)
• Health and welfare of elderly people
• Management of social housing/law and regulation of social housing
• Property portfolio management
• Domiciliary care – specifically the commercial aspects of running such a service.
• Charity governance

And with the following personal qualities:

About the role

The Bournemouth & Poole College’s activities are overseen by the Board of the Corporation. It is responsible for agreeing, supporting and scrutinising the delivery of the College’s strategy.

The College Board has 16 members and includes members from the commercial, public, voluntary and education sectors. The Board operates a committee structure model and operates strictly in accordance with the government’s laid down ‘Instrument and Articles of Government’.

The role of the Governor is fundamental to strong and effective governance and is, therefore, key to Bournemouth & Poole College’s continued success. The Governors will bring experience at a strategic or senior level with a real recognition of the difference that education makes to the lives of thousands of people each year.

Starlight is the national charity for children’s play in healthcare. They support children to experience the power of play during treatment, care and recovery from illness in more than 600 healthcare settings across the UK.

Starlight believes that children’s healthcare services should fully reflect the importance of play to their health, wellbeing and resilience and that every child who is an inpatient should have daily play opportunities, appropriate to their condition, supported by dedicated play staff. They aim to enable all children in the UK to have their right to play protected and provided for when they are receiving healthcare – in or out of hospital.

Their recent report shows:

• 71% of Trusts and Health Boards do not have a designated budget for play resources.
• 85% of Trusts and Health Boards have no appropriate guidance or standards for health play.
• An average ratio of only one full-time HPS for 3,986 child admissions to hospital per year and there are 1.8 million hospital admissions for 0-17 year olds each year.

Starlight provides toys, technology, toolkits and training for play professionals to alleviate the immediate trauma that children are experiencing in hospitals across the UK. Using their uniquely curated research and evidence base, they also work towards systemic change in healthcare, galvanising a collaborative effort for the changes that are needed through policy and advocacy work.

Starlight’s income needs to grow in pace with demand for its vital role as Champion and Protector of Play. The new Philanthropy Trustee role has been created to support this growth in a collaborative, relational and strategic way. This new Trustee will support the development of collaborative relationships and partnerships with individuals and organisations to grow income. They will bring a passion for Starlight’s work, ideas, introductions and opportunities as well as a contemporary and values-led mindset. Who we are.

Ambitious about Autism is the national charity for autistic children and young people. We were established in 1997 by a group of families of autistic children who were concerned about the lack of appropriate provision for their children. Following a major capital fundraising campaign and a series of temporary locations and premises, Treehouse School and our charity moved into purpose-built accommodation in 2008, together creating the Pears National Centre for Autism Education. Since then, we have grown our education services opening Ambitious College, The Rise School and Spring School, and merging with St John’s College in September 2023, alongside extending our national influencing and enabling activities.

We run specialist education services and an award-winning employment programme, wherein children and young people are at the heart of our charity’s decision-making, policy work and campaigning. We also use our expertise to deliver training and consultancy to a wide range of organisations to improve awareness and understanding of autism. We want to help even more autistic children and young people to improve their quality of life and secure a fulfilling and rewarding future.

Even during the pandemic, we lived up to our name as we achieved so many goals and plans. We developed our Right from the Start toolkit, launched our Employ Autism campaign, and have grown and evolved.

We are experiencing an exciting period of growth. We were chosen to open a new school – Spring School which supports up to 90 pupils at capacity from ages 4-19 and we announced our merger with St John’s College. Although this is exciting, we have a battle on our hands as we call on the government to follow their solutions in the SEND Green Paper. We’re concerned that some of the proposals will make it even harder for autistic children to access education support and so we are asking for a public commitment from the government to fund support for children with SEND. There are more than twice as many children with SEND in schools and colleges now than there were in 2010, but the government has not set out what funding will be available to pay for the additional support they need.

We know there is an increasing need for mental health support across all schools. Everyone should be able to feel OK at school. But we know this isn’t the case for many autistic pupils. That’s why we created the Autistic and OK programme to empower autistic pupils to take control of their mental health and wellbeing, understand themselves and feel OK at school. Our guide is free for every single secondary school. But there is more for us to do, to continue to build and empower our communities to ensure autistic young people feel understood and accepted.

We recognise that there is still more to be done to grow and develop our important work, first outlined in our Time for Ambition 2021-2024 strategy and so we are extending this strategy for a further two years. Our aims continue to include ensuring autistic children and young people have an excellent and inclusive education, alongside striving for every autistic young person to have good careers education at school and in further and higher education, including experience of work. Autistic people need services that support good mental health by reducing isolation and so we want to ensure early intervention through signposting to specialist support. We aim to ensure peer networks are available alongside uplifting but realistic information tailored to autistic young people and their families. We also want to further develop our Ambitious Youth Network and continue to expand nationally to empower young people to connect with one another and to influence societal change.

Given we run schools, following a governance review in December 2019, we created our own Multi-Academy Trust – Ambitious about Autism Schools Trust (AaAST) which currently has two schools. We implemented several new changes to our governance including Joint Trustees and a joint committee structure wherein there are five trustees each of the Charity and Trust Boards and three Trustees who are Trustees of both Boards who serve as the joint Chair, Vice Chair and Treasurer of the Charity and Trust. All Trustees of the Charity and Trust are members of a Joint Group Board Committee to ensure oversight of the Charity and Trust. How this works in practice is everyone meets together with a short meeting afterwards to discuss Ambitious about Autism Schools Trust.

Our new Chair.

Our current Chair, Neil Goulden, is approaching the end of his term in December 2024, and we are in search of our next Chair to lead our Board. We need a Chair who has extensive experience in modern board leadership, ensuring robust governance, and promoting collective strategic decision-making. We are looking for someone who is commercially astute, as we strive to drive our organisation’s continued growth, ambition, and development. We value a Chair who embodies credibility and adeptness in navigating complexity. The ability to work with others and build trusting relationships with a variety of stakeholders are key.

Our new Chair must be committed to making a meaningful impact and leading an organisation that empowers young autistic people during a pivotal period of change in our communities. We need a Chair who is an inclusive leader, fostering engagement, strategic thinking, and openness who will lead the board as an

exemplar of inclusivity. They must be supportive and challenging, creating opportunities for growth and positive impact.

It is vital that our new Chair works with the board to ensure that all voices are heard and will have an affinity for our mission to stand with autistic children and young people, champion their rights, and create opportunities.

The new Chair will work with an established board and ambitious executive team that is ensuring our organisation is sustainable, evolving, innovative and impactful, and leads change whilst providing outstanding education to young autistic people.

The Board meets once a term and has an annual strategy away day. We expect the time commitment for the Chair to vary, and we would expect the equivalent on average of circa two days a month across various activities such as preparation for board meetings, reading board papers, regular conversation with the Chief Executive, ad hoc discussions with board members and the executive team, and attending events throughout the year.

Our board is diverse in many ways, including autistic people, who are part of our board, alongside a balance of gender, ethnicity, and age. We want to continue ensuring our Board represents our society and the people we work with every day.

Main purpose of job: Develop and implement our social media & content strategy in order to increase our online presence and drive engagement

Main Duties and Responsibilities:
 

• Develop a content calendar across all social platforms ensuring a constant supply of relevant content (1 post per week on LinkedIn, Facebook & Instagram – initially)

• Collate content for, prepare and publish the monthly volunteer newsletter through MailChimp

• Identify and engage with key social influencers to create beneficial relationships and strong networks and grow the ADC brand

• Perform social listening across all social platforms by monitoring and responding to relevant brand mentions and identifying opportunities for engaging in related topics/discussions

• Define social media KPIs, measure and optimize social media performance metrics, and develop enhanced reporting

• Manage and oversee social media content

Knowledge, Skills, and Experience

Essential

 

• 3+ years of experience in social and content management

• Experience using MailChimp or similar software

• Excellent knowledge of Facebook, LinkedIn, Instagram and other social media platforms

• Experience of forming relationships with key influencers on social media

• Good understanding of SEO metrics and social media KPIs

• Ability to come up with creative content (text, image and video)

• Available to volunteer at least 7 hours a week

• Ability to actively take initiative and help set things up in a start-up environment

• Ability to actively seek and give input in a collaborative team environment

• A committed team player with good communication skills.

Desirable
 

• Experience of establishing online communities on social media

• Experience working in an early stage start-up and gone through a scaling phase

• Passion for the start-up life and comfortable in a role with a little ambiguity

Lay Trustee Appointments

The Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Southwark covers the geographical area of the whole of London south of the Thames, all of Kent and the eastern parts of Surrey.  With currently 180 parishes, 171 schools and 450 employees it is one of the largest dioceses in the UK.

The Diocese Charitable Incorporated Organisation (CIO) is run by a Board of Trustees, who are responsible for determining the strategic direction of the Diocese, management of the assets, the smooth running of the day-to-day administration and the legal discharge of its responsibilities. 

The role of a Lay Trustee is about helping the Archdiocese achieve its ambitious vision for evangelisation and leading people to Christ, while especially promoting our diverse and vibrant communities. The Archdiocese is seeking to secure a range of skills and expertise in the appointments, which include legal, property or safeguarding. Experience within the education sector may be helpful.

In addition to the general duties and responsibilities outlined by the Charity Commission of England and Wales, Lay and Clerical Trustees collaborate to help shape the strategic vision of the charity and work closely with the Chief Operating Officer and his team focussed on key functions including education, fundraising and property management.

This will mostly be achieved through attendance at the Trustee meetings, which take place at least once a quarter. There is a minimum requirement of three meetings a year, with additional meetings for the first year.

Lay Trustees must be practicing Catholics, but they do not have to be Southwark Archdiocese parishioners.

Application is by way of CV initially followed by a Supporting Statement, which should concentrate on motivation, credentials, experience and knowledge and be around 1,000 words max.

Expressions of interest and applications will be reviewed and progressed on a rolling basis with the aim of having secured appointments by early May 2024.

Candidates taken forward to interview will be required to complete a formal declaration of eligibility to become a Trustee.

Every effort will be made to facilitate an informal visit to the Archdiocese Offices and the opportunity to meet with the Financial Secretary prior to formal interview.

About the new Trustee: LEF is an interesting and rewarding organisation to be part of, and this is a key moment for someone who enjoys finance and strategic thinking to join us. Your financial expertise could come from a wide range of backgrounds and roles: you may be a senior finance person in the not-for-profit sector, or you may have a private or legal sector career in finance and have some understanding of the charity sector. You are also likely to be a qualified accountant but if not, you will need an equivalent amount of knowledge and experience of charity accounting. You’ll also need to bring passion and commitment to our mission, purposes and aims, and willingness to devote the necessary time and effort.

Previous trustee experience is not essential.
