Activities volunteer roles

Public Programme Volunteers are a big part of making sure our diverse range of events go off without a hitch. They’re creative, enthusiastic, and great with people. They’re also keen to get stuck in and learn more about how public programmes in the heritage sector are put together and delivered.

The museum offers a range of public programming throughout the year but particularly in the summer (Wednesday to Sunday), and during Holiday periods (Monday to Sunday): February Half Term, Easter Holidays, May Half Term and October Half Term. We are looking for volunteers who are available during these periods to support with a range of activities.

How you will help

• Providing a friendly greeting for all visitors.
• Supporting the set up and take down of workshops, activities, and events
• Facilitating activities such as: Tower building in the Splash Zone, Bubble discos, crafts, Water Filtration Experiments, and more!
• Supporting visitors way-finding and access through the museum
• Working collaboratively with the wider LMWS volunteer team

Time Commitment

Volunteers can book a full day, or a half-day shift. Shifts are flexible and you can choose the number of days you work. As stated above, we particularly needs support during our Holiday periods. Full training will be provided.

London Museum of Water and Steam

The London Museum of Water and Steam tells the story of London’s water supply, the site, its people and the amazing pumping engines that helped to make London the city it is today.

Today the museum is at the heart of the community, working in partnership with community groups and welcoming many residents.

The Great Autistic CIC is Newly-Founded and exists to tackle rising mental health concerns, hypermobility, inadequate support systems, limited awareness and inclusion, educational barriers and community disconnection faced by neurodiverse individuals, particularly those with autism and learning difficulties.

Join our amazing volunteer team in this flexible opportunity that puts you at the heart of our work supporting blind and partially sighted people. You’ll make taking part in events and carrying out volunteering easier and more enjoyable for our customers and volunteers with sight loss. You’ll take some of the stress and anxiety out of getting around and taking part in activities as a blind or partially sighted person. The help you give will encourage people to do more. What you’ll be doing • Sighted guiding / giving practical help to individuals in and around venues, so they can take part in events. • Supporting volunteers with sight loss with their volunteering activities which range from facilitating a regular community group to delivering a talk about sight loss to a local business. Your role would involve things like guiding; Meeting and greeting at group activities or creating a welcoming and interesting display stand at events. In this role you will only be helping individuals in places open to the public, often in a group setting. We will provide training in sighted guiding techniques and understanding sight loss. The 2025 event will have around 200 participants who will be walking through Birmingham on either the 1km, 5km, 10km or 15km route.

Together these participants will be hoping to raise over £30,000 for the MS Society to help support the MS Community.

There are various roles available on the day from making some noise and encouraging our walkers, to looking after the route and handing out medals at the finish.

Join our team of MS Walk volunteers and support everyone who is walking, rolling and strolling to stop MS.

You'll be required on Saturday 14th June 2025 for one day and there are various times throughout the day. Shifts will be from 2-6 hours depending on role and location.

There are no specific skills required just enthusiasm and a can-do attitude.’

The 2025 event will have around 200 participants who will be walking through Cardiff on either the 1km, 5km or 10km route.

Together these participants will be hoping to raise over £25,000 for the MS Society to help support the MS Community.

There are various roles available on the day from making some noise and encouraging our walkers, to looking after the route and handing out medals at the finish.

Join our team of MS Walk volunteers and support everyone who is walking, rolling and strolling to stop MS.

You'll be required on Saturday 20th September 2025 for one day and there are various times throughout the day. Shifts will be from 2-6 hours depending on role and location.

There are no specific skills required just enthusiasm and a can-do attitude.’

Why we need you?

The Halifax Charity Gala is organised by a committee of local volunteers in their spare time. The work required to plan and execute the gala is quite large & growing, with volunteer Committee Members working all year round to support the 40 or so local good causes we represent.

This all requires your friendly face & attitude on Gala Day to provide a warm welcome to our paying customers, accredited volunteers, commercial concessions, arena acts & others.

What will you be doing?

Helping to organise Calderdale’s longest-running annual not-for-profit family event! On a more practical level you’ll be the first Gala representative customers see, so will check their tickets/accreditation or take admission payment and provide them with a programme.

As a Gate Steward, on Gala Day you could be:

• Welcoming everyone with a friendly, positive attitude

• Managing entry queues, ensuring those with tickets/accreditation use the fast-track lanes, and that an exit lane is maintained

• Assisting customers with accessibility needs to navigate the queues

• Scanning eTickets in (and out, if they are likely to want to return)

• Checking hand stamps (of procession participants)

• Checking wristbands (of accredited persons)

• Checking paper tickets

• Accepting card & cash payments for people wishing to purchase admission on-the-day

• ‘Clicking’ people in & out using manual tally counters

• Providing information to customers about the Gala, entertainment timetables & other activities taking place

• Handing out printed programme booklets to customers on entry

• Issuing hand stamps for non-eTicket customers who may want to return

• Assisting in maintaining a safe & enjoyable environment, reporting any issues to your volunteer Gate Supervisor

Not every volunteer Gate Steward will be doing every task – there is flexibility to alternate between tasks on each gate. We can make reasonable adjustments for volunteers who have additional needs, conditions or disabilities which affect the tasks they are able to do.

What skills do you need?

• Basic numeracy skills, to work out total cost of admission for a group, and to provide change

• Ability to use smart mobile device (ie tablet / phone) applications for scanning eTickets (training on the specific app will be provided on the day)

• Ability to use Process Data Quickly (PDQ) ‘card’ machines to accept payments by card (training on the specific terminals will be provided on the day)

• Good interpersonal and communication skills 

• Enthusiasm & a positive can-do attitude

• Willingness to work as part of a team with a flexible approach

• Proactivity & a good initiative

• Assertive when necessary

• Ability to deal with any incidents that may occur in a cool & calm manner

Not every volunteer Gate Steward will need to have every skill – there are several positions on each gate, and your volunteer Gate Supervisor will allocate you based on your existing skills & experience.

How much time do you need to commit?

We require Gate Stewards on Gala Day – the second Saturday of June each year.

Gate Stewards need to be available for one of two shifts:

• Early from 1000 to 1530

• Late from 1130 to 1700

Though any volunteers who want to start earlier / finish later would always be welcomed to do so!

This allows to us to have all Gate Stewards on their allocated gates between 1200-1500, which is our busiest time for customers entering & leaving.

What support will you be given?

Each gate team is led by a volunteer Gate Supervisor, who will be the first point of contact for any issues locally. They will have a radio to contact Radio Control.

Each gate also has an SIA licensed Door Supervisor present from our externally contracted crowd safety service provider, who will support with any prohibited items, invalid accreditation / tickets, refusal to pay, etc.

The volunteer Gate Supervisors are in turn supported by a volunteer Gate Manager, who will visit each gate several times during the day.

A briefing will be provided at your start time, by the volunteer Gate Manager and/or a volunteer Committee Member.

About the role 

As a Regional Fundraising Volunteer, you will support Rethink Mental Illness in generating income, raising awareness, and building community engagement through local fundraising initiatives. The role will involve event planning and support, and public engagement to help achieve regional fundraising goals. 

You will play a major part in bringing to life regional fundraising activities in line with our “Rethink in the Community" concept and increase regional awareness to generate much needed additional income and amplify the impact of the work Rethink Mental Illness do.

You will receive training and regular supervision to ensure you feel confident in your role.

Whilst this is a home based role, you will occasionally attend events within your region. We're particularly interested in receiving applications from people who live in the following areas:

What you will be doing as a Regional Fundraising Volunteer: 

• Support and assist in organising and participating in local fundraising events.

• Help with event logistics, set-up, and participant engagement to ensure smooth delivery. 

• Take part in local initiatives acquiring donors and do it yourself fundraisers. 

• Increase awareness of the organisation’s work by helping to promote regional fundraising activity. 

• Represent the organisation at schools, community groups, and public events, delivering presentations to inspire support. 

• Communicate with supporters via phone, email, and face-to-face interactions. 

• Attend and contribute to meetings with the fundraising team and supporters to share updates and ideas.

About us

At 2497 (Cosford) Squadron, we’re proud to be part of the Royal Air Force Air Cadets, a national youth organisation that empowers young people aged 12 to 20 to develop leadership skills, resilience, and confidence through exciting opportunities like flying, adventure training, sports, and community service.

We meet twice a week and we’re always looking for volunteers who are willing to try their hand at anything. You could find yourself teaching skills, running activities, or providing encouragement and moral support. If you have specialist skills, we can use them. If you want to learn new skills like rock climbing or gliding, we can train you.

 About the opportunity

This role involves supporting with events in your local area throughout the year.

There is no minimum commitment for the role. Times will vary depending on the requirements of the event. You will be provided with an event brief beforehand to ensure you are happy with the requirements for that activity.

By volunteering you will:

• Passing on any leads to the Community Fundraising team

What we require from you

• Age 18 or over
• Access to your own transport with flexibility to visit various locations
• Polite, confident, and personable manner
• Excellent customer service skills
• Most opportunities require standing for the duration of the session and/or being in a busy environment. Please advise us if you have any concerns about this, and we will do our best to support you.

Support and Training

• Payment of expenditure such as mileage to and from an event.
• Dedicated point of contact in the fundraising team
• Pre-event briefings outlining the requirements of the event

The ride will have around 500 participants who will be cycling around the picturesque seaside towns of Havant, Southsea, Fareham and Gosport and can choose either the 32 or 54 miles route.

Together these cyclists will be hoping to raise over £60,000 for the MS Society to help support the MS Community.

Event Date – Saturday 5th July

Event start – 8am Registration / 9am ride starts

Volunteer timings – 7:30 – 17:00 (all day) 

                                – 7:30 – 12:00pm or 12:00pm – 17:00pm (half days)

Join our team of volunteers and support everyone who is cycling to stop MS.

This role is only required on 5th July 2025 for one day and there are various times throughout the day. Shifts will be from 2-6 hours depending on role and location.

Meet and Greet Host

Dyscover offers long term support to people with aphasia, a communication problem which can occur after a stroke or brain injury.

Our Group Host welcomes our members and their carer as they arrive to our Kingston support group:

• Providing refreshments before the session and during breaks

• Helping to set up and tidy away

• Attending occasional meetings/training sessions relating to the role as required
