Job description

TITLE OF POST:  Fundraising and Database Assistant 

RESPONSIBLE TO: Corporate Fundraising Manager  

Salary: £21-23,000 (depending on experience)

Location: The Stephen Lawrence Centre, Deptford, London SE8 4HU

Main purpose: The Stephen Lawrence Charitable Trust is looking for an experienced and motivated

Fundraising and Database Assistant to support our growing fundraising streams.

The Stephen Lawrence Charitable Trust is a small charity dedicated to improving the lives of young people and communities from disadvantaged and under-represented backgrounds.

Through our portfolio of high-impact programmes we:

  • Work with young people from disadvantaged backgrounds aged 13 to 30 to inspire and enable them to succeed in the career of their choice. 
  • Empower individuals and communities to create better places for people to live and work. 
  • Support people to create a fairer society in which everyone, regardless of their background, can flourish

Over the last two years, we have undergone an exciting journey to move from being London-focused to having national reach and presence through Stephen Lawrence Day and a developing a fundraising portfolio that includes Individual Giving, Events & Community Fundraising, Corporate Partnerships and Trusts & Foundations. We are looking for a dynamic and experienced Fundraising and Database assistant to join the team and help us along our journey to achieving further growth.

Key skills / experience / abilities

  • Experience in running and maintaining a donor database for a charity or similar organisation.
  • Excellent telephone manner
  • Excellent writing skills and the ability to personalise standard correspondence (thank you emails, monthly donation reminders, etc.)
  • The ability to manage his/her own workload, prioritise tasks and respond promptly to donor queries with minimal supervision, while also working as part of a wider team.
  • Excellent IT skills and experience of working with Google Drive, Excel, Word and Gmail.
  • Working knowledge of Fundraising Regulator and Data Protection / GDPR principles, and other relevant law and best practice guidance.
  • Understanding of and empathy for the work of the Stephen Lawrence Charitable Trust

Job Purpose:

  • Support and grow the Trust’s income streams by maintaining existing relationships with companies and individuals
  • Pro-actively responding to opportunities for support, ensuring you employ a holistic view about how to best maximise each relationship and activity
  • Ensure existing and new relationships are stewarded effectively to secure long-term support for the Trust
  • To steward the relationship with the Trust’s Ambassadors, providing outstanding supporter care and maximise fundraising opportunities
  • To support on the roll out of the Friendship scheme, ensuring all necessary materials are rolled out and undertaking marketing activity to recruit members
  • To identify opportunities for income-generating activity by researching third-party fundraising and partnership opportunities
  • To ensure the new SLCT database (Donorfy) is utilised and used appropriately

Main tasks:

  • Manage and maintain our donor database (Donorfy).
  • Deal promptly with donations received via a variety of pathways (online, cheque, cash, PayPal, BACS transfers, etc.).
  • Work in close partnership with the Corporate Fundraising Manager to steward donor relationships by corresponding with supporters by email, letters and phone.
  • Keep accurate and detailed records of donations received via a variety of donation portals and crowdfunding websites (JustGiving, Virgin Money etc).
  • Assist the fundraising team in sending out newsletters by email and keeping donors regulary updated.
  • Monitor and manage donations from our regular monthly donors and weekly financial report pulling and coding of income
  • To support on the successful delivery of Stephen Lawrence Day, identifying opportunities to generate income from the campaign and ensuring it’s messaging is amplified as widely as possible
  • Prepare timely reports for the Corporate Fundraising Manager
  • Simple book-keeping (donation records, expenditure, Gift Aid receipts, etc.).
  • To support the maintenance of the Trust’s website, ensuring it contains high quality content that accurately reflects opportunities for supporting the charity
  • To identify and research new sources of funding and complete research for funding applications
  • To research, prepare and submit funding proposals, e.g charity of the year, probono support including agreed outcomes and budgets, in consultation with service delivery staff, finance and other staff, where appropriate.
  • To report to donors on the impact of our work and the important role they are playing in supporting this


  • To lead on maintaining the SLCT database (Donorfy), ensuring it’s used appropriately
  • To ensure that accurate records of all supporter activity are tracked effectively
  • To maintain accurate and up to date records of all funding opportunities, appeals, approaches, donor contacts and coverage.


  • To attend supervisions, team meetings and other meetings, as and when required.
  • To attend internal and external training courses, as agreed with your line manager.
  • To represent the organization at internal and external events including networking events, fundraising events and launch activities, as and when required, occasionally on evenings and weekends.
  • To adhere to the Institute of Fundraising Code of Practice, Charity Law, Health & Safety Law, GDPR and other relevant legislative requirements.
  • To undertake any other duties as required.
