Our client is seeking a new Trustee with a background in veterinary or medical practice to support their Board and team in achieving their charitable aims. They are looking for someone who, in addition to their own expertise, has an interest in human-specific research approaches. This is a unique opportunity to join the country's leading animal-free medical research charity, where you will play a key role in helping to advance science to improve treatments for humans without the use of animals. You should have a strong interest in their mission and be willing to advocate on the charity’s behalf. Previous experience of being a Trustee is not necessary as a full induction and ongoing support will be provided.

Board meetings and time commitment 
 
The Board ordinarily meets four times per year in March, May, August and November. Two of these meetings are held remotely via video call on a Saturday, and two are held in person in London across weekends. In addition, Trustees are encouraged to join a Committee relevant to their area of expertise which meets at least once per quarter via video call. An appropriate time commitment will be required over the course of the year for preparative work between meetings. Trustees are also invited to attend occasional charity events and join recruitment panels on an ad hoc basis. Following a probationary period where Trustee-elects attend at least 3 board meetings, appointed Trustees serve a three-year term, with the option to renew for a further three years. Trusteeship is an unremunerated position, though reasonable out-of-pocket expenses will be paid.

Role: Online Activities Volunteer

Commitment: Currently, sessions are run both during the week (mostly in the afternoon) and at weekends (usually on a Saturday). Activity volunteering is a flexible commitment, and you will be able to sign up for the session you like and when you have time. It really is up to you and your availability.

What will I be doing?

Our amazing Activity Volunteers play a key role in supporting blind children and young people to take part in a variety of activities. These range from sports, creative (singing, performing, art), audiobook club and day trips. Our activities are designed for blind young people to meet new friends, gain confidence, learn new skills/sports, and become more independent. The skills you have developed in your career and personal life will be invaluable to our young people. 

Key Tasks and Main Duties 

Online activities: 

• support the session timetable 

• facilitate the communication and social interaction between participants 

• encourage members of the group to participate and share their opinions 

Who are you?

We welcome applications from people with a wide range of skills and experiences. You don’t need to have volunteered or worked before as full training will be provided. What’s important to us is that you are a team player, open to learning and willing to follow RSBC’s policies and can be an excellent ambassador for RSBC. We particularly welcome applications from people with lived experience of sight problems.

As part of your volunteering, you will have access to Sighted Guide training, a training session designed to help you understand the issues and complexities of sight problems and give you the ability to help others navigate the world.

RSBC can also provide references and impact reports from your volunteering if required. 

You will be fully supported in your role by our team of expert and compassionate service delivery team.

Safeguarding:

The Outreach & Referrals intern will work alongside our Head of Engagement and Referrals Leads to further improve our connections with stakeholders and referral partners. The successful intern will regularly engage with stakeholders and referral partners as well as assisting in the organising, marketing and running of our next Open House event. They will also contribute to the processing and follow up of referrals.

• Help to analyse stakeholder survey results and data.

Positively UK is looking to appoitnt a new Chair of teh Board of Trustees to lead the strategic direction of our organisation. 

Positively UK is a registered UK charity providing peer-led support, advocacy, and information to everyone living with HIV. We help people manage all aspects of their diagnosis, care, and life with HIV. We are a peer lead peer run charity and 90% of our staff are living with HIV.

Our vision is a society where people with HIV live happy, healthy, and stigma-free lives.

Our mission is to empower and support people living with HIV with the knowledge, tools, and connections they need to live fulfilling lives and reduce the stigma surrounding HIV. Working in partnership with the NHS, Positively UK’s peer work is integrated at clinics across London and beyond. The charity also offers training and support to increase access to peer support nationally and runs various support groups in the community.

Duties of the Chair

Next to the general responsibilities of a Trustee, the Chair will:

• Pursue the aims and objects of Positively UK

• Liaise with Positively UK’s CEO regularly and support them in their role

• Give direction to policy making and strategic development of the charity

• Agree with and delegate to the Vice Chair specific duties and responsibilities to assist with and in support of their role of Chair

• Represent the charity, when appropriate, at functions and meetings, and act as a spokesperson when required or requested by the CEO

• Delegate to one of the other officers to act for the Chair when the Chair is

not available

• Chair and facilitate Board meetings (at least every two months)

• Prepare and submit copy for Positively UK’s publications and communications as required

• Liaise with the Admin Officer and Honorary Secretary to keep an overview of affairs and to provide support as appropriate

• Attend finance meetings with CEO, Honorary Treasurer, and Accountant

• Support recruitment, induction, and support of Trustees according to skill

mix

• Support EDI (equality, diversity and inclusion) throughout the Board and the

organisation

• Lead the process of appraising the performance of the CEO

• Facilitate change and address any conflict within the Board

We believe that the first step to realising our mission is to gather and make available data to understand the views and experiences both of service users and staff in health and care organisations. We conduct many of the largest quantitative and qualitative research for a wide range of public and private healthcare organisations, national bodies, voluntary sector organisations, and international healthcare providers, investigating issues related to people’s experiences of care and organisations’ efforts to improve services. We are also determined to help turn feedback into action. We do this by a combination of identifying, sharing and promoting best practice via Awards, thought leadership and consultancy services.

About the Role

As part of the Charity’s Board of Trustees, you will be responsible for overseeing the strategic direction, financial management and governance of the organisation to ensure that at every step we are working to improve people’s experiences of health and social care services. To achieve this, you will:

• Ensure that the organisation works within its mission and charitable objectives and is compliant with charity and company law within the jurisdictions within which it is registered and operates.
• Further the charitable objectives of the organisation, including promoting our mission and staying true to our values.
• Ensure that the organisation’s policies, practice, performance, and operations are in keeping with our aims and objectives.

Responsibilities

Members of the Board of Trustees are expected to:

• Be an active and engaged member of the Trustee group.
• Take part in regular board meetings with a frequency of 6 to 8 meetings each year.
• Undertake work outside board meetings, eg preparation and reading.
• Participate in sub-committees, reflecting trustees’ policies or concerns or provide high level input to defined organisational projects from time to time.
• Interact, respond to and provide constructive challenge to our staff and other board members.
• Occasionally attend our launches and presentations of our work, alongside our staff at events and receptions.
• Occasionally represent Picker at meetings with potential funders or influencers.
• Contribute your skills, interests and contacts and support us in fulfilling our mission and in our influencing and developmental activities.
• Support, coach and help empower our staff to achieve their potential and deliver their goals.
• Take part in any training sessions provided.
• Fulfil any other duties and assignments as may be required from time to time by the Board.
• Act as an advocate for Picker in your activities in other settings.

Commitment

The full Board of Trustees meets every two months, usually in Oxford or remotely via video conference. There may be sub committees, with authority delegated to them by the Board, meeting at other intervals; and staff may seek to consult with you on your particular expertise. Occasionally, you may also be asked to represent Picker at meetings with potential funders or influencers, attend our report or product launches, or work alongside staff at events and receptions. We expect the typical commitment to be around one to two days per month.

Pay range and compensation package

This is an unpaid post, though reasonable expenses incurred through performance of duties will be reimbursed.

Qualifications

Applicants must be committed to the values and vision of Picker and committed to understanding and using people’s perspectives to improve health and social care. Demonstrable passion and commitment to person centred care for health and social care users, their carers and families, and staff is essential.

Required Skills

A background in one or more of the following areas is very desirable for these appointments:

• Communications – with experience of raising the profile of a similar sized charity or organisation to Picker.
• Business development – with expertise in identifying new opportunities to create long term impact.
• Finance experience – with a keen eye for numbers, although you do not necessarily need to be financially qualified.
• Health service – with experience as a user of health and care services, as a researcher in health and social care or as a health service practitioner or manager, whether in the NHS, the private sector, or internationally.
• Social care – with experience of working in or managing a social care provider or elsewhere in the sector.

Preferred Skills

Experience, knowledge, and skills:

• A commitment to the aims and strategic objectives of Picker and the ambitions of its growth strategy.
• A commitment to understanding and using the patient, client, service user, or consumer perspective in health and social care.
• Knowledge and experience of the governance and management principles of a charity registered in England or Scotland (desirable).
• The ability to work supportively with other Trustees, advisers, and executive colleagues to high ethical and professional standards and in line with their legal responsibilities.
• A proven strategic thinker with experience of operating at a senior management level.
• A skilled communicator who is experienced in persuading, influencing, and advising.
• A demonstrable interest in health and/or social care issues and social policy within the UK and/or overseas.
• A commitment to transformational change and learning, improvement and performance.

Watford & Three Rivers Refugee Partnership is dedicated to supporting refugees and asylum seekers by providing immigration services, advocacy, a social hub and ESOL classes. As  Communication Volunteers, you will play a key role in sharing the stories of refugees and asylum seekers, raising awareness about their challenges, and promoting the charity’s mission. As part of a team you will develop and implement communication strategies to engage supporters, attract donors, and build partnerships. This role involves managing social media, creating compelling content, and ensuring consistent messaging across all platforms.

 

Key Responsibilities:

• Develop engaging content for social media (Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, Tiktok), newsletters, blogs, and website updates whilst monitoring engagement and responding to comments.
• Write press releases, articles, and promotional materials to raise awareness.
• Develop partnerships with influencers, community groups, media outlets and other charities and organisations.
• Support campaigns that promote refugee rights, integration, and policy change.
• Help develop communication guidelines that ensure respectful and ethical storytelling.
• Assist in volunteer and donor engagement through impactful messaging.

Skills & Experience

• Passion for refugee rights, humanitarian work, or social justice.
