Role title: Trustee

Location: Flexible (travel to London will be required at least three times a year for in person board meetings)

Salary: N/A (Volunteer role)

Time commitment: Attend 3 in person board meetings annually and 3 online sub committees. Exceptional board or sub-committee meetings may be scheduled when necessary.

Contract: The Trustee is appointed for an initial 3-year term with the option of renewal for up to 3 terms. The maximum term for all trustees (including the Chair) is 9 years. 

Purpose of the role:

This is an exciting opportunity for an experienced leader to join an impact-focused and ambitious charity supporting refugees to access meaningful employment and build a new life.

The board’s role is to govern Breaking Barriers effectively, in service of our vision and mission. Trustees provide support and challenge to the Chief Executive, Senior Leadership Team (SLT) and are ambassadors for the charity.   

Essential Duties of the Trustee Role:

• Ensure Breaking Barriers is carrying out its purposes for the public benefit
• Comply with Breaking Barriers' governing document and other laws that apply
• Act in Breaking Barriers' best interests: prioritise Breaking Barriers' objectives, avoid conflicts of interest, and follow procedures to manage any conflicts
• Ensure Breaking Barriers is accountable: meeting legal, accounting and reporting requirements
• Manage Breaking Barriers' resources responsibly: managing risks, protecting assets and people, getting the resources we need, having appropriate controls and procedures
• Act with reasonable care and skill using your skills and experience, deciding when you need professional advice, ensure Breaking Barriers remains solvent

Other Responsibilities:

• Understanding the vision, mission, goals and values of Breaking Barriers together with a good grasp of the operational context and the expectations of partners
• Strategic leadership and vision: help to guide the organisation with a strategic vision, aligning the board and staff's efforts with the mission. Ensure that the organisation defines its goals and evaluates performance against agreed targets
• Facilitating discussions: Lead conversations when necessary, ensuring focus on key issues and decisions
• Leveraging opportunities: Support and participate in fundraising strategies, leveraging networks, and engaging with donors and stakeholders to secure necessary resources for the organisation's work

Person Specification: 

We are seeking board members with a passion for the mission, vision and values of Breaking Barriers, and a commitment to equity, diversity and inclusion. We strongly encourage applications from individuals with lived experience which we define as people from a refugee background, with first hand experience of seeking sanctuary or migration to the UK.

In addition, we actively seek candidates who bring any of the following:

• Prior fundraising expertise: focusing on corporate and high-end individual funding to generate leads, ability to contribute to active fundraising efforts, introductions to relevant networks and relationships
• Leadership experience at a senior level within corporate organisations and a commitment to actively making introductions to relevant networks and contacts
• Refugee/forced migration sector experience: leading or developing initiatives/programmes in areas relevant to the mission, such as employability or recruitment

3. Secretary (Board of Trustees)

We are looking for volunteers interested in working with young asylum seekers and refugees to support our weekly youth club in Croydon, ‘Merhaba’. Merhaba Youth Club is a safe space where 18-25 year old refugees and asylum seekers living in contingency accommodation can come to socialise with their peers, develop friendships, build a better understanding of their rights and entitlements, gain new skills and access 1:1 support.

The club runs on Tuesdays, 2.30-5.30pm, and we ask that you come to Merhaba at least three times each month and attend the whole session. The role involves supporting staff to set up and deliver activities – including 1:1 English and games – as well as administrative support.

• Since its creation, Quilombo UK has collected a great amount of information, evidence and items through projects, fundraisers, events etc.

• We are looking for a team member to find published materials related to Quilombo UK key objectives and interests, especially cultural and racial diversity, and stereotypes in UK communities. The materials include all types of evidence, articles, journals, newspaper columns, local and global news stories. 

• The researcher will help to collect information that can be used as an evidence base to help inform future activities, and also in exhibitions, workshops, and community events. 

• We are looking for a self-starter who can source, collect, and share relevant materials independently. You will also be working closely with our Professional Development Programme participants in relevant areas such as Marketing and PR.

• Provide written reports as and when required. To undertake additional duties as required for the role.

General tasks

The Professional Development Programme with Quilombo UK runs over a period of 16 weeks, is UNPAID and requires a minimum of 12 hours commitment per week across Monday, Wednesday and/or Friday.

Upon successful application, our HR team will contact you to arrange an interview. Following a successful interview, we'll initiate the onboarding process by sending you the necessary documents. Once your onboarding and identification documents are received and verified, you'll be invited to a 6-hour HR and System Induction. Job Description:
Youth Advantage UK is seeking a volunteer Head of Local Operations to lead the launch and on-going delivery of its commissioned research projects in England and Wales. The focus of these projects will be obtaining and analysing primary and secondary data in order to help smaller community organisations improve their ways of working and effectively report on their impact. The successful candidate will be responsible for ensuring their teams deliver these projects within the agreed time-scales and in line with the goals agreed with the commissioning organisations, growing Youth Advantage’s reputation and reach.

Working closely with the Departmental Director, the ideal candidate will use their prior experience to effectively contribute to the organisation’s ability to enable evidence-based, positive local change. They should have excellent leadership, writing and speaking skills, IT literacy, and the ability to work well independently and in a team.

Crisis of Faith: 1 in 4 young Muslims are leaving the religion due to various factors, primarily the pervasive anti-religious content and temptations they encounter online and offline. 

Roots Academy exists to bridge this gap by providing a structured and transformative Islamic education that speaks directly to the needs and challenges of young Muslims today, delivered in an engaging and accessible form that removes barriers to access and provokes thought and action.

Role Summary.

We are seeking a dedicated Technical Support Specialist to serve as the first point of contact for our application users, including students, instructors, and administrators. This role involves resolving technical issues, supporting user onboarding, and developing helpful resources and documentation. You will collaborate with our digital and product teams to ensure a seamless and stable user experience.

Key tasks

• Serve as the primary point of contact for application users, addressing technical issues and inquiries across various channels including email, chat, and support ticketing systems.

• Diagnose and resolve user interface (UI) issues specifically related to the student application.

• Develop and maintain comprehensive documentation of frequently asked questions and common technical issues to enhance self-service options and improve overall support efficiency.

• Effectively escalate complex or unresolved technical problems to the digital team.

• Provide support for new users onboarding onto instructor and administrator portals, including user training sessions and the creation of helpful support materials like how-to guides and instructional videos.

• Collaborate closely with the product development team to thoroughly test new features and updates prior to their public release, ensuring stability and user-friendliness.

• Demonstrated commitment to Roots Academy’s mission and eagerness to contribute.

• Proven experience in a technical support, help desk, or similar client-facing role, preferably within a software or education technology environment.

• Strong problem-solving abilities with a methodical approach to diagnosing and resolving technical issues, particularly related to user interfaces.

• Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to explain technical concepts clearly and empathetically to non-technical users.

• Familiarity with support ticketing systems and knowledge base management.

• Ability to work collaboratively with cross-functional teams.

• A proactive attitude towards identifying areas for improvement in support processes and user experience.

• Experience in creating user-friendly documentation, training materials, or video tutorials is desirable.

EVENTS VOLUNTEER (Guildford & Epsom Branch)

We are the RSPCA and it's our vision to live in a world where all animals are respected and treated with compassion. Our volunteers are incredible and play an absolutely essential role in helping us carry out our important animal welfare work every day. Much of the RSPCA’s direct animal welfare work is carried out through the branches. These separately registered charities across England and Wales are run by volunteers who are unstinting in their work for animal welfare.

We are looking for friendly volunteers to help fundraise at fetes, in supermarkets and other outlets to collect vital donations that enable us to continue our animal welfare work. The more volunteers we have and funds we can raise, the more animals we can help!

Overview of the opportunity

In this role, you will be the friendly face of the RSPCA, helping us raise funds for our branch at community fetes and in local high streets, supermarkets and similar outlets.

This varied role offers you the chance to experience different volunteering positions, ranging from street collections and in-store fundraising drives to attendance at local community fetes. Each of these events are equally important to raising vital funds as well as raising our profile in the community.

Volunteering at events offers you the opportunity to meet other volunteers and learn about how you each support the RSPCA. You will most likely meet animals that we have rehomed and hear about their adoption journey.

If you have a relaxed dog that likes meeting people, you are welcome to bring them along with you to street collections and fundraising drives as this is always a conversation starter!

Location is dependent on the event at which you choose to volunteer, you will be out in the community in the local area

What you will be doing

(this list is not exhaustive but gives an idea of some of the tasks that you may be required to assist with.)

• Street collections and fundraising drives: standing with a collection bucket, greeting members of the public and thanking them for any donations.
•  Fetes and fairs: potentially assisting with set up or pack away, handling money from sales of chatting to members of the public and thanking them for any purchases they make.
•  Helping seek out event opportunities and organising them.

The skills you need

• No experience is necessary as we will provide you with the guidance you need.
•  Reliability and commitment.
•  Good organisational and communication skills.
•  Enjoy working with the general public.
•  Enthusiasm and passion for the work of the RSPCA.
•  We ask for a minimum of one hour of your time - we recommend a maximum of 2 hours at any one event as you will be standing.
•  You will need to be aged 18 years old or over to volunteer in this role unless you can be accompanied by an adult.
