At Hestia we have gardens and outdoor spaces which require your support to bring these back to life by keeping them maintained.

We are recruiting for volunteers to motivate and inspire staff and people living in our services to get involved in gardening.

Engaging in gardening has shown to have both immediate and long-term effects on mental health. Gardening for several hours has been known to reduce depression, stress and anxiety.

What you will be doing:

• Inspire and motivate staff and people in the services to get involved in maintaining and growing the garden
• To provide tips on how to maintain and grow the garden - sowing seeds, planting bulbs, taking cuttings
• Provide basic maintenance such as cutting the grass, emptying bins, managing weed control and leaf raking
• Lead in planting and nurturing new trees, flowers, and various plants
• Provide best practice on how to use the correct gardening tools
• Inspire people in our services and staff to maintain a clean garden
• Advise staff on the costs of plants and garden necessities

The skills you need:

• A basic knowledge/ experience of plant care and use of gardening tools
• Calm and patient approach
• Good communication skills
• Ability to provide a supportive, and inclusive atmosphere that encourages learning and participation

• Supporting older people to gain digital skills and knowledge on a computer, tablet and smart phone via one to one or in small group sessions

• Supporting older people to learn the skills to keep in touch with family and friends, such a video call and messaging
• Support individuals to agree and aspire on the steps/ goals they would like to achieve in the sessions
• Lead on the logistics and organisation of the sessions alongside the staff team
• Keep a record of attendees, provide feedback, and report any concerns to the staff team

You will be supporting people to express their emotions, provide a time for people to relax and feel proud of their final art products! We are recruiting for a volunteer to support and facilitate an art and craft group.

What you will be doing

• To prepare arts and craft sessions, involving individuals in the planning process where possible
• Inspire and motivate individuals to develop their arts and craft skills, assisting them in the creation of their projects and supporting them to brainstorm and use their own initiative
• Encourage individuals to continue independent activities

The skills you need

• Experience of arts and/or crafts either in a professional, educational, or personal level
• Able to collaborate with individuals to plan an art group session and facilitate confidently
• A calm and patient manner

What you will be doing

• Coordinate and facilitate weekly walks in local parks to the service alongside other volunteers
• Meet with the walking group weekly
• Hold conversations with people attending the group, checking in on their wellbeing and providing a listening ear/friendly face
• Keep a record of attendees, provide feedback, and report any concerns to the staff team
• Meet at a designated point and travel via public transport to a local park

The skills you need

• Inspire and motivate people to attend the walking group
• Ability to identify, manage any possible risks that may arise during the walking group. Training will be provided
• Willing and able to go on a weekly walk lasting approximately 60-90 minutes
• Good communication skills

Facilitating a weekly walking group, you will contribute to a timetable to support people to reduce isolation, improve their physical activity, self-care and create a community for them to come together to build connections and friendships.

Are you good at navigating? We are recruiting for a Travel Assistance volunteer to support our service users with travelling to and from sessions, whether it be by train, bus or by foot.

Our Modern Slavery Team have a new 6-week program for Mums and their children to attend starting on the 20th of March, however extra support is needed for service users who need help getting there. Your role will be to meet the service users from their safe house and travel with them to these sessions. As our service users attending these sessions will be living in different locations, we don't have a specific location for the role. Please note that we do reimburse travel expenses!

We are also looking for on-going volunteers once this program has ended.

We are recruiting for a befriender Volunteer for when people to provide social or practical help. It can take a number of forms such as mentoring, listening, education, informal group discussions or participating in a shared activity.

• To maintain regular contact with our Service User, carrying out regular support and meetings with them.
• To encourage the Service User to develop their own support networks.

We have an exciting opportunity for a volunteer to coordinate workshops on beauty/pampering to enhance good hygiene practice, promote confidence within oneself and positive wellbeing.

• Encourage group discussions and pampering sessions around wellbeing, self-esteem and looking after themselves 

• Inspire and motivate the group to be involved in future planning/designing of the session

What you will be doing

• To support people who are not confident with numeracy to develop these skills through tutoring sessions over a video call
• Agree a mutual agreeable time and frequency that works for both parties 2 to 3 days a week.
