Who we are looking for
You will be a committed and well-motivated leader with cross-sector experience and understanding of the complexity of growing an organisation in partnership with the civil society and other partners. Experience on Boards, ideally as Chair, and a passion and willingness to learn and to develop others so that the board can thrive and support the executive and wider staff team.
All Trustees are encouraged to contribute actively to the Board of Trustees’ role in giving firm strategic direction to Concordia, in relation to specialist skills and role and setting overall policy, defining goals, setting targets, and evaluating performance against agreed targets. Financial stability and protecting income, investment and the oversight of expenditure are the collective responsibilities of the board. Insuring against liability and ensuring compliance is also key. Support and line Management for the CEO is led by the Chair on behalf of the board, as is their regular performance review. The Chair also supports the recruitment and performance of Trustees.

Role specification
The National Holocaust Museum is at a pivotal moment in its journey, rich in history, purpose, and potential. We are seeking a new Chair who can harness this momentum and lead the organisation into its next chapter of growth and influence.
This is a unique opportunity for a strategic and values-driven leader to elevate an already respected institution to the next phase. The ideal candidate will bring a deep commitment to the Museum’s mission and will serve as both an ambassador and catalyst, aligning Board and executive leadership, strengthening governance, and unlocking new opportunities for reach and long-term sustainability.
The Chair must be able to navigate the nuanced context of a Christian-founded Holocaust museum, appreciating both the complexity and the significance of this positioning. They will champion the Museum’s work with young people and wider audiences and support the leadership team to deliver on an ambitious vision with clarity, purpose, critical insight and unity.
Core responsibilities
As Patrick Dunne outlined in “Boards”, the role of a Board is to ensure the organisation has the right strategy, right governance and right resources. The main tasks required of the new Chair are:

Align and develop the Board into a highly effective collective voice that provides professional governance in line with the expectations of the Charities Commission, The National Lottery Heritage Fund and Arts Council England for public money, and the Museum’s most loyal philanthropic funders. A careful review of Board effectiveness is needed to inform future Board diversity, development and ways of working, both as a Board and in collaboration with the Executive Team.

Support the development of the Funding Strategy, identifying and working with a range of existing and potential funding partners, while contributing the Chair’s own set of networks and influence to support the future strategy.

Work with the Board and Leadership Team to build towards the next iteration of the strategic plan for the NHM of the future – which must focus on funding as a priority and consider the strategic prioritisation necessary given external and funding constraints. The plan should define clear KPIs, accountability, financial management process and ways to strengthen culture, people and workflow. Any such plan should also consider relationships and positioning within the wider Holocaust education sector.
Boards require clarity around their own purpose, process and people to operate effectively. As such, the main attributes required of the new Chair are excellent judgement and superb communication and people skills. This includes highly sensitive and strategic “antennae” for how groups can work effectively together, within organisations and across sectors including education, museums, inter-faith and security.
In addition to the attributes above, the Chair will ideally possess the following:
- Chair experience or equivalent (e.g Deputy Chair or Chair of a Committee). Demonstrated ability to stimulate and manage productive conflict, avoid groupthink and build meaningful consensus among diverse voices. Must be experienced in Board agenda-setting that balances necessary strategic deliberation with fiduciary requirements.
- Expertise in governance including a minimum level of financial acumen and risk management experience, ideally from the public, private or charitable sectors, with an appreciation of the fiduciary requirements for the use of public or donor funding.
- Experience leading organisations through transition, at both Board and team levels, particularly in the context of shifting external trends, resulting in sharper mission clarity, ambition, execution requirements and accountability.
- An appreciation for the creative arts sector, and an ability to work with and nurture creative individuals and teams.
- Experience working with various funders and the ability to firmly enable constructive and mutually respectful relationships with them.
- Willingness to bring and develop their network to support the organisation with influence, funding, or other relevant support. Key networks that are important to the Museum: national government and statutory funders (Department for Digital, Culture, Media & Sport, Department for Education, The National Lottery Heritage Fund, Arts Council England) and the Jewish community across the UK, whose generous support is vital to the organisation’s growth.

Emergency Nutrition Network (ENN) is a well-established and highly respected UK-based charity working to reduce malnutrition globally. ENN strives to enhance the effectiveness of nutrition policy and programming by building evidence, convening critical actors and transferring knowledge. We are passionate about being field driven and are globally recognised as thought leaders and conveners in nutrition. Our vision is a world where ‘Every individual confronted by malnutrition has access to the knowledge, tools, services and resources they require to meet their needs. We work with governments, civil society, UN, donor and academic organisations to achieve mutual goals. Through these collaborations we support agencies to implement evidence-based nutrition programming, predominantly in low- and middle-income countries.
The Trustee Role
ENN is seeking to appoint a new Chair of Trustees to lead its Board with strategic insight, collaboration, and a deep commitment to the organisation’s mission. This is a significant and rewarding opportunity to guide the governance of a globally respected charity at a pivotal time in its journey.
As Chair, you will play a key leadership role in ensuring that the Board of Trustees operates effectively, provides strong oversight, and supports ENN to fulfil its charitable objectives. You will work in close partnership with the CEO and fellow Trustees to shape and monitor the delivery of ENN’s strategy, ensuring that the organisation complies with its purpose, charity law and company law and that the organisation pursues its objectives as defined in its governing document.

We are looking for a Chair who brings substantial leadership and governance experience, including at board level within the charity, public, academic, or international development sectors. While a background in nutrition or humanitarian work is not essential, a strong interest in global health, development, or social impact is important.
Your Responsibilities as a Trustee:
As Chair of the Board, you will play a key leadership role in ensuring the overall effectiveness of ENN’s governance and strategic direction. You will guide the Board in fulfilling its collective responsibility to uphold ENN’s mission and values, while supporting the organisation to thrive in a complex and evolving funding landscape.
Your responsibilities will include:
- Chairing the Board of Trustees: Leading quarterly Board meetings and the Annual General Meeting, ensuring well-structured and inclusive discussions, clear decision making, and effective follow-up on actions.
- Strategic Leadership: Working with the CEO and fellow trustees to shape and review ENN’s strategic direction and priorities, especially in light of changes in the global funding environment.

Required Knowledge and Skills
- Demonstrable experience of senior leadership, preferably at board level, within the non-profit, public, or international development sectors.

Previous experience of charity trusteeship is desirable but not essential if the candidate demonstrates equivalent governance or board leadership experience in another sector.
Membership and Operation of the Board
The ENN Board of Trustees comprises individuals appointed by the Trust Members, selected for their diverse skills, experience, and commitment to ENN’s mission and values. Collectively, the Board provides strategic leadership, ensures good governance, and supports ENN in delivering its charitable objectives.
Trustees are appointed for an initial term of four years and are eligible for reappointment at the discretion of the Trust Members at a General Meeting, in accordance with ENN’s Articles of Association.
The Chair of Trustees is elected by the Board from among its members. The Chair serves for a term of up to three years and may be re-elected for one additional term. This ensures a balance of continuity and renewal in Board leadership.
The Board meets quarterly and may convene additional meetings as required. Trustees are expected to attend meetings regularly and actively participate in subcommittees, working groups, and strategic initiatives as needed.
Time Commitment – And our Commitment to You
Your commitment in an average year is likely to be 4 pre-fixed board meetings, each of half a day. Each of these are preceded by sub-committee meetings, usually of ninety-minutes, and each trustee is expected to participate in one sub-committee. Other committee and ad hoc meetings and additional support will be arranged as agreed. We encourage active participation and engagement, and Trustees often give more time outside of this, on their own terms.
Board meetings are held virtually, with an intention to hold one facilitated face to face meeting at the ENN HQ in Kidlington, Oxfordshire, every two years. Additional sub-committee meetings will be convened remotely.
Ideally you will join the Board in 2025, though we can show some flexibility on this for the right candidate, and in your first few months you should allow for additional time for induction and orientation (including meeting a number of the Leadership Team).
Remuneration
This is an unpaid, voluntary position. Reasonable expenses will be reimbursed for attendance at Board meetings and other Trustee activities in line with ENN’s policies. Some employers encourage and enable trusteeship as part of wider career development and corporate social responsibility; please check with your organisation and their relevant policies.

We produce highly regarded research and publications that inform and inspire practitioners worldwide and we convene technical interest groups and communities of practice who are the ‘go to’ networks for their specialisms. Our partners know and trust ENN for quality, rigour and impartiality. Our work makes a real difference in the lives of children in some of the most difficult parts of the world. The ENN-led Operational Guidance on Infant Feeding in Emergencies has become the key global policy guidance and has been endorsed by the World Health Assembly, and our technical leadership and convening has facilitated real change in awareness and a new narrative, challenging siloed approaches to Wasting and Stunting management.
Our work has never been more important. Nutritional challenges are growing across the world; undernutrition rates may be slowly decreasing but other forms of malnutrition are on the rise. The positive progress that is being made is unequal and many countries are now facing the double burden of both under and over nutrition. Crises around the world are increasingly protracted and the historical and artificial silos of ‘humanitarian’ and ‘development’ don’t reflect real needs which are much more fluid. Emerging threats, such as the broader impact on nutrition of the COVID-19 pandemic bring new challenges to address.
At present our annual turnover is around £1.8m (c. USD2.27m), we employ 28 staff and engage 20 - 30 specialist consultants. With our new strategy, we are keen to drive even greater impact by exploring new and innovative approaches and increasing our reach further still. We do so with funding in place from a range of institutional partners and private foundations.
As an organisation working across numerous technical areas relevant for countries experiencing high burden of malnutrition, we look to the board, and those trustees with a more technical focus in particular, to discuss new technical gap areas with us to ensure we maintain a responsive and balanced portfolio, to help us further develop our network, funding and connections, and to help us navigate the important work we do to influence structural and impactful change in the sector, including advising in situations where there is potential for strategic risk. We are looking for a Technical Trustee to join the board who can bring their technical knowledge and extensive experience to this role.

Our History
Founded in 1996 in Ireland, ENN has a long and rich history in global nutrition. Following an evaluation of the Great Lakes Emergency in 1995, implementing agencies identified an urgent need to establish a vehicle for capturing programming experiences and preserving institutional memory in the emergency food and nutrition sector. This gave rise to ENN’s publication, Field Exchange, which was first produced in 1996, designed to stimulate critical thinking and learning, influence research agendas and cross-fertilise information and exchange. ENN was generously hosted by Trinity College Dublin for its first eight years, before relocating to Oxfordshire in 2004 and is now a UK registered Charity.

Our Strategy aims to enhance the effectiveness of nutrition policy and programming by improving knowledge, stimulating learning, building evidence and providing support and encouragement to practitioners and decision-makers involved in nutrition and related interventions. We take a particular lens on fragile and conflict affected, and high burden, states. We have three core principles guiding our work:

ENN’s team is made up of a range of technical experts in nutrition, with decades of collective experience, and a small operational team. ENN’s Management Team comprises of the CEO, 2 Technical Directors, a Finance Manager, HR Manager & Projects Coordinator Lead. As well as our 28 staff, we engage a significant number of experienced specialist consultants on our projects. Our Finances
ENN is financially supported by a range of institutional donors (including the Irish and US governments), charitable foundations (including the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and the Eleanor Crook Foundation), as well as UN agencies and INGOs. Our income has grown over the last few years, with income in the current FY 2023 projected at around £2m (c. $2.5m).
Our Governance
ENN is a UK-registered charity (Charity Registration Number: 1115156) governed by the Board of Trustees and a set of ‘Articles of Association’. The Board is currently comprised of 8 Trustees and meets regularly throughout the year, with full board meetings on a quarterly basis. The Board currently has three sub-committees, one covering Governance & People, another Technical and the other Finance, which are responsible for ensuring the highest standards in terms of finance, personnel, and technical expertise and application.
As a UK-registered Charity, ENN also files accounts as a UK-registered Company with Companies House (Company Registration Number 04889844).

The Vacancy:
Emersons Green Village Hall is seeking to recruit a Chair of Trustees to build upon our success to date, provide visionary strategic leadership and steer the charity through its next stage of development and growth.
This is a voluntary role with a minimum time commitment of approximately five hours per month. We have up to six scheduled bi-monthly Board Meetings, which last up to two hours and are usually held on Tuesday evenings. In addition we have Committee Meetings to deal with faniances and operations, plus our AGM. Meetings are held via Miscrosoft Teams or in-person at Emersons Green Village Hall.
The Role of the Chair:
The Chair’s role is to lead the Board of Trustees, providing strategic oversight and governance, and creating a positive and inclusive culture. The Chair will be actively leading on shaping the future of our Hall, developing the business, and setting its strategic direction to ensure financial viability for the future.
We are looking for an enthusiastic individual with a wide variety of skills who can be an enabler to oversee the charity and build on the progress we have made to date. Ideally you will have experience of being a Trustee. We are also looking for individuals with leadership, management, and organisational development skills. Experience in the voluntary sector, community facilities or running community projects would also be beneficial.
As a ‘hands-on’ Chair, you will bring your experience and skills to the role and will be supported by the Trustee Board, plus an established staff team including the Hall and Events Manager, plus the Treasurer and Company Secretary.

Overview of the Branch Chair opportunity
This is a fantastic opportunity to improve animal welfare by playing an instrumental part in the production, monitoring and review of our Branches development plan. You will be able to influence how we raise our funds and how these are allocated in our local area.
As a minimum, trustees would normally be expected to attend a monthly committee meeting lasting some 2 to 3 hours. However, the commitment may vary depending on whether the trustee takes on additional duties.

The RSPCA London South East Branch
The London South East Branch is one of the branches of RSPCA, but we are also a separately registered charity looking after animals in our local area. Much of the animal welfare work of RSPCA is carried out through local branches, which is run by volunteers who have the support of the National Society of RSPCA.
The London South East Branch has two retail shops (Sydenham Road and Norwood Road) and supports the work of the Inspectorate through rehoming of animals within the branch area.
Primary responsibilities of the Branch Chair

Take the chair at branch committee meetings and direct the activities.

Act jointly with all co-trustees and work closely with the branch secretary and treasurer.

To act as co-signatory, if required, on branch cheques and ensure that proper financial procedures are always followed, in line with charity legislation.

Ensure that all committee members are familiar with branch rules, national Society policy and their responsibilities as a charity trustee.

Be instrumental in the production, monitoring and review of a branch strategy.

Actively coordinate the activities of the branch, including the delegation of tasks.

Ensure that a branch representative is appointed to the regional board and that the representative gives the committee a full report on the business conducted after each meeting.

To ensure that all the essential roles within the committee are filled by suitable, appropriate trustees or volunteers.

In conjunction with your fellow trustees and Branch Partnership Manager write, adopt, monitor, and review a development plan setting out the short and long term aims of your branch.

Actively participate in branch committee meetings and to attend the branch annual general meeting and regional conference.

Be aware of the outcome of regional board meetings and support local initiatives.

Actively promote and advertise the society in an ongoing programme to recruit new branch trustees and volunteers and welcome new members.

In conjunction with your fellow trustees, ensure the proper management and control of all activities and decisions relating to any premises held or staff employed by the branch if applicable.
What we are looking for in a volunteer:
Ideally you would have specific skills such as finance, legal, fundraising, project management, business experience, awareness of employment and/or charity legislation. These all can be useful to help ensure we have a sound and robust business model and long-term strategic development plan, however, they are not essential.
We are also looking for people who are creative, innovative, who have experience of or are part of the groups and communities we want to attract, who can bring new ideas, different experiences and fresh perspectives to the Board and help put those ideas into action.
You will need to be able to work with people and have good interpersonal skills. You do not need to be an expert, although commitment, common sense, and the ability to be objective are vital.
No previous trustee experience? That’s OK! We welcome applications from anyone interested in developing their skills by becoming a trustee and will provide relevant training.

Practical considerations

The Governance, Audit & Risk Committee (GAR) Purpose & Duties:
The Governance, Audit and Risk Committee is a Sub-Committee of the Board of Trustees of the 1851 Marine Trust (the “Trust”). The Committee shall meet not less than 4 times a year and at such other times as it considers necessary.
The Committee shall provide support, assurance and recommendations to the Board on:
- Best practice in charity governance and as appropriate governance arrangements for the Trust
- The effectiveness of the Trust’s internal control and risk management framework, including key policies and procedures
- The conduct of the external independent examination or audit and the Trust’s annual report and accounts, including the performance of the independent examiners’
- The day-to-day financial operations and controls including monitoring income and expenditure against the annual budget
Trustee - Role and Responsibilities
As a Trustee your role will be to use your skills and your personal experience to contribute to the work of the Board. Trustee responsibilities will include the following:
Leadership:
Promote the vision, values and objectives of the 1851 Marine Trust and take an active role in supporting the Trust’s strategy. Assist fellow Trustees in agreeing strategic aims, ensuring that the necessary financial and human resources are in place to meet its objectives, and that performance is effectively monitored and reviewed. Engage positively and collaboratively in Board discussion of agenda items.
Management:
In accordance with agreed Board procedures, monitor the performance of the Trust, identify and manage risks posed by its activities and assist in the satisfaction of statutory duties around the preparation of annual reports and accounts, fundraising and safeguarding. Provide independent judgement and advice on issues of strategy, vision, performance, resources and standards of conduct and apply this to the benefit of the organisation, its stakeholders and wider community. Participate in committees as determined and delegated by the Board of Trustees.
Governance:
Commit to working to, and encouraging within the Trust, the highest standards of probity, integrity and governance and contribute to ensuring that the internal governance arrangements, including the management of conflicts of interest, conform with the Trust’s constitution, best practice and statutory requirements. Obtain assurance that financial information is accurate and that financial controls and risk management systems are robust and appropriate.
Requirements for new Trustees:
Able to attend 4-6 meetings a year with sufficient time to review meeting papers. The time commitment is estimated at a minimum 20 hours per year but could increase depending on the outcome of agenda items and related sub-committee work. Documents are sent to Trustees by email and meetings are held both electronically and in person.
Trustees/Board members are not paid, though reasonable expenses are claimable. Initial term of office is for three years.

What is a Branch Chair?
There are SSAFA branches throughout the UK and overseas. Many are further divided into local areas called divisions. Each branch has a Chair to oversee all aspects of the branch. Ultimately accountable to the Chair of the Board of Trustees, through the National Chairman your role is to ensure that the branch is running in line with SSAFA’s Royal Charter Rules, Regulations, and policies. Also, to ensure that clients and volunteers are safe, all services provided are appropriate and effective and that the branch is financially sound. You will be the public face of SSAFA in your branch area.
Why do we need you?
We’ve been supporting the Armed Forces community since 1885. Our clients come from all backgrounds and age groups and may have served in WW2 or in a more recent conflict like the Falklands or Afghanistan. More people than ever are contacting SSAFA for financial, practical and emotional support. To do this we need local branches and volunteers who can coordinate people, ensure the local population know about SSAFA and keep things running smoothly behind the scenes.
Our branches support local volunteers to deliver services to veterans, serving personnel and their families. Some branches are divided into smaller divisions to ensure the best local service delivery. Each branch has a team of volunteer caseworkers, support volunteers, executive roles, and fundraisers.
When would you be needed and where would you be based?
This role is about leadership, coordination, and administration. As part of your local branch, you might have access to an office, but many volunteers are based at home. The role requires an ongoing time commitment, usually about 2-3 days per month. In addition, you would need to organise and attend regular meetings throughout the year.
What would you be doing?
- Providing leadership to the Branch and ensuring that all activities comply with SSAFA regulations both directly, and through the Branch Secretary, other Branch Officers, and Divisional Officers.
- Providing support and guidance to volunteers in office holder roles, and support with recruitment of volunteers into these positions to ensure the sustainability of the branch.
- Ensuring the financial integrity of the Branch, including the appointment of Treasurers and a local fundraising programme to meet branch running costs.
- Ensuring that all data is processed and held in accordance with SSAFA’s data management policies.
- Monitoring volunteer numbers against the demand for support and working with other volunteers, regional and central office staff to attract and recruit new volunteers as required.
- Ensuring that all volunteers are recruited, inducted, supported, and managed in line with SSAFA policies, such as the Volunteering Policy, Volunteer Code of Conduct, Data Protection Policy, and Safeguarding Policy.
- Building relationships with regional and central office staff, local voluntary organisations and, if applicable, SSAFA Service committees, local military establishments, prisons etc.
- Overseeing an appropriate programme of awareness raising so that potential clients, volunteers, and supporters know how to contact the branch.
- Providing timely reports and information to SSAFA’s Central Office
- Overseeing a programme of meetings including an AGM, branch meetings, committee meetings, training etc.
- Supporting any salaried branch staff and ensuring that their line management arrangements are working appropriately.
- Resolve any complaints that are suitable for local resolution in accordance with SSAFA’s Complaints Policy and procedures, referring upwards any that are not suitable for local resolution.
The remit of this role may change over the next 12-18 months depending on the outcome of a trial currently being undertaken.

What training and support would you receive?
- Role specific training to prepare you for your voluntary role – caseworker training, caseworker IT system training, volunteer management – attracting, recruiting, and inducting volunteers.
- Mandatory on-line training modules to complete at home, so you are up to date on how to keep clients, their families safe and personal information safe.
- Local orientation as well as meet and greet sessions with key Central Office and regional teams.
- Access to a range additional e-learning courses as well as local opportunities for your personal and professional development.
- Support from Regional and central staff and peer support from fellow Chairs in neighbouring branches.
- Reimbursement of out-of-pocket expenses
- Volunteers will be covered by SSAFAs Public Liability Insurance whilst carrying out the role.
What are we looking for?
- Friendly and approachable people of any age (18+) with some experience of coordinating people and admin
- Willingness and ability to lead and manage a team of volunteers.
- Respectful and non-judgemental approach with beneficiaries, their family, other agencies and SSAFA colleagues
- Willingness and ability to learn basic digital skills. Ability to send and receive emails – you will receive your own SSAFA email address which you will be required to use when exercising your role.
- Willingness to use our on-line case management system (this is covered in the training course)
- Ability to understand and keep within the boundaries of the role for which training will be given.

- Practice confidentiality and data protection in line with SSAFA policies.
- Willingness and means to travel to meetings or events as required.
- Good written and spoken English.

Chair of Trustees - Bristol Animal Rescue Centre

For over 135 years Bristol Animal Rescue Centre (Bristol A.R.C) has cared for Bristol’s animals; helping, healing and homing those in greatest need at their Rescue Centre in the heart of the city. Their mission is to ensure animals in need in the community receive the compassion, care and respect they deserve. Through the work of their outreach services, veterinary clinic and rehoming centre they help, heal and find homes for thousands of animals every year, as well as offering hands-on support and welfare advice to the people who love them.
Bristol A.R.C is about to embark on a huge project and after over one hundred years of rescuing and rehoming animals from its site on Albert Road, they are preparing for a monumental change: they are planning to move.
The historic Albert Road site has been home to the stray and unwanted pets of Bristol since 1901, a place where thousands of animals have found the comfort, care, and the second chance they deserve. But as the city grows and construction booms in the St Philip’s Marsh area, their surroundings have changed dramatically. Bristol A.R.C. are now enveloped by building works, heavy traffic, dust, and near-constant noise from the regeneration.
They now need a new Chair who will work with the Board and organisation as they look for a new site and fund raise to enable this to happen.
As Chair, you will have the chance to influence their strategy and directly support our teams of experts in the rescue, rehabilitation and rehoming or release of animals that come into their care.
You will serve on the governing body of the charity and be instrumental, alongside your fellow Trustees, in providing the governance that supports the CEO and senior management team in the successful running of the organisation.
