Unseen Expeditions UK is a newly forming Charitable Incorporated Organisation (CIO) supporting mission-led charities and expedition projects across the UK and internationally. Our flagship initiative, The Unseen Mile, is a 4.5-year journey covering 25,000 miles across 37 countries. Through this and future projects, we aim to inspire, raise awareness for important causes, and share unique storytelling and learning experiences from the field.

Role Overview

Time Commitment
The appointment is for a three-year term, which can be renewable for a maximum of nine years (subject to recommendation from the Committee Chair and Governing Council’s Nominations Committee).
There are five Governing Council meetings and two strategy days per year, which are held in person, usually in September, November, February, April, and July.
Attendance at five of those meetings (at least one of which would be a strategy day) as a minimum is usual.
Governing Council Meetings are usually four hours long and include a seminar session. Before meetings, preparation time will be required to read through committee papers, organise thoughts, and ensure contribution to the debate.
Governing Council Members are required to complete mandatory training modules and induction and are invited to attend networking events and University graduation ceremonies.

Duties and responsibilities:

The Role
As our next Trustee, you’ll play a vital leadership role in bringing our vision to life. Working closely with our Chair, CEO, and Executive Leadership Team, you will provide strategic oversight, guide our governance, and help scale our impact.
Time Commitment
This role is about more than simply being available—it’s about being genuinely engaged. We're hoping to find someone who feels inspired to make this a meaningful part of their journey. It may be your primary board or leadership role, given the depth of involvement, but it also offers the opportunity to contribute in a truly rewarding way.

Role Description: Treasurer
Position: Treasurer (Trustee)
Accountable to: Board of Trustees
Location: Bognor Regis/Remote
Time Commitment: 1-2 days per month
Term: 2 yr
Purpose of the Role
The Treasurer is a key member of the Board of Trustees, taking the lead in overseeing the financial health of the charity. They ensure proper financial management, reporting, and compliance with legal obligations, while supporting the Board to make sound financial decisions that enable the charity to achieve its mission in reptile welfare, conservation, and education.
Key Responsibilities
Financial Leadership

Monitor the financial standing of the charity and ensure effective financial controls are in place.

Oversee the preparation of budgets, accounts, and financial statements.

Ensure the Board understands the charity’s financial position and the implications of decisions.

Chair the finance sub-committee (if applicable) and report key matters to the Board.
Compliance & Reporting

Ensure compliance with charity law, company law (if applicable), and HMRC requirements.

Oversee the preparation and submission of the annual report, accounts, and returns to the Charity Commission.

Ensure financial policies and procedures are up to date and fit for purpose.
Support Fundraising & Sustainability

Advise on the financial implications of the charity’s strategy, projects, and fundraising activities.

Support the development of income streams and fundraising initiatives, ensuring they are financially viable.

Monitor reserves and ensure a balance between short-term needs and long-term sustainability.
Working with Staff/Volunteers

Liaise with staff or volunteers responsible for day-to-day financial operations (e.g. bookkeeping, invoicing, banking).

Support the Chief Executive/Manager to ensure accurate and timely financial information is available.

Provide guidance and training to Trustees to strengthen the Board’s financial literacy.
Person Specification
Essential Skills & Experience

Financial qualifications or relevant experience (e.g. accountancy, bookkeeping, financial management).

Experience of financial planning, budgeting, and reporting.

Strong analytical skills and ability to explain complex financial information clearly.

Understanding of the responsibilities of charity Trustees.

Commitment to the values of animal welfare, conservation, and community engagement.

Through grants and emergency equipment loans, we ensure children get the vital equipment they need, when they need it, while our free nurse helpline offers crucial support and information – as well as a listening ear. We’re now seeking new Trustees to strengthen our Board and help shape the future of our vital work.
Who we’re looking for
We welcome applications from individuals with a strong commitment to inclusion, equity, and our mission. We are particularly interested in candidates who bring expertise in one or more of the following areas:
- Retail & Commercial – helping us grow and develop our network of charity shops and enterprise initiatives.
- Digital Systems & Infrastructure – supporting digital transformation, data management, and IT governance.
- Disability – lived or professional experience of disability, access and inclusion.
- Children’s Services – knowledge of child development, safeguarding, or children’s policy.
Previous trustee or governance experience is welcome but not essential. We offer support and induction for all new trustees.
Trustee responsibilities
- Attend and contribute to quarterly Board meetings (hybrid format, with at least one in-person meeting in Cannock annually)
- Provide strategic direction and oversight
- Uphold good governance and regulatory compliance
- Contribute to committees or working groups aligned with your expertise
- Act as an ambassador for Newlife, upholding our values and promoting our work
- Trustees are expected to dedicate time to meeting preparation, email communications, and occasional events, equating to roughly 1–2 hours per month outside of meetings.
