At The Advocacy Academy, we envision a world where young people with lived experience of injustice (LEofI) harness their collective power to shape a more fair, just, and equal society. Our mission is to organise and support these young people to drive systemic change on the most pressing issues of our time.
We do this by offering deep coaching, delivering transformative leadership programmes, and creating clear pathways for sustained action. Through shared learning and community-building, we help young leaders build the knowledge, skills, and confidence to launch and lead proactive campaigns. We also recognise that real change starts from within - so we’re committed to a governance structure that is values-driven, participatory, and beyond reproach, ensuring TAA is as accountable to young people as it is to the communities we serve and its wider responsibilities.
We’re now looking to recruit three new Trustees to join our Board and help steer this work. We're especially keen to hear from people with leadership experience in one or more of the following areas: Finance & Fundraising, Community Organising and Campaigns & Legal
Trustees of The Advocacy Academy play a unique role in delivery of our mission. They are collectively responsible for the governance of the organisation, represent it to the community, and accept ultimate compliance authority for the charity and its activities. As a Trustee with experience in the UK’s youth sector, you will support the Board and the Executives in ensuring that TAA continues to deliver an exceptional quality of youth work, and the role that safeguarding plays in achieving this. As a trustee:
- Work with the Chair, Trustees and Senior Leadership team to ensure there is a clear, long-term and strategic vision The Advocacy Academy.
- Work with the Board to ensure we function within the legal and financial requirements of a UK registered charity and company, our constitution and that we strive for best practice
- Take responsibility with the other trustees so that the organisation has effective practice to safeguard the people it works with
- Act as an ambassador, spokesperson and champion our work supporting our income activities, and fostering networks that can help generate income.
About Our Board of Trustees
- Our Board currently consists of four members, recruited, selected, and approved by the Board of Trustees.
- Each trustee serves a three-year term, and we are made up of individuals from diverse backgrounds and ethnicities.
- The Board meets quarterly (four times per year) to provide strategic oversight and governance. Operations/day to day are managed by the Executives.
- Given the size of the board, we expect all trustees to join at least one subcommittees meeting per year, unless there are extenuating circumstances. .The subcommittee meets are typically held prior to full Board meetings.
- Board meetings are held at our Liberation Centre in Brixton and subcommittee meets are held virtually
- The role of trustee is voluntary, though reasonable expenses are reimbursed.2• Trustees are expected to prepare in advance by reading reports and meeting papers, and are also warmly invited to attend our events throughout the year.
AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITY
1. Finance Trustee - Trustee will provide charity financial governance oversight of The Advocacy Academy, including but not limited to: Working closely with our Finance Director and the Finance & Risk Committee will:
- Provide support on financial oversight and ensure compliance with relevant charity and regulatory requirements.
- Review and co-present financial reports and key insights to the Board of Trustees.
- Actively participate in the Finance and Risk Committee, ensuring effective financial scrutiny.
- Strategic contribution to long-term financial and fundraising planning and support the organisation’s risk management framework.
- Attend Finance and Risk subcommittee meetings quarterly.
2. Community Organising and Campaigning Trustee - The Community organising and campaigning Trustee will provide organising and Campaigns governance oversight of The Advocacy Academy, including but not limited to: Working closely with our Director of Organising and Campaigns and fellow trustees, they will:
- Provide strategic oversight of The Advocacy Academy’s organising and campaigning activities and priorities.
- Ensure campaigns are ethical, legally compliant, and aligned with the organisation’s values.
- Support the development of effective, youth-led organising and campaigning strategies.
- Offer insight into advocacy trends, movement-building, and political landscapes.
- Serve as a sounding board for the team, offering critical friend feedback without operational interference.
- Help the board assess risks and opportunities related to public positioning, reputation, and partnerships.
- Good governance, diversity and teamwork are at the core of the Board’s values. We want to ensure trustees represent the young people we work with and we are particularly interested in applications from people with lived experience.
3. Legal Trustee - The Legal Trustees will provide Legal perspective on governance oversight of The Advocacy Academy, including but not limited to: Working closely with our Trustees, they will:
- Provide strategic legal perspective on compliance with charity law, employment law, using legal knowledge or by signposting to our external legal support.
- Provide legal perspective on any strategic decisions the board makes, which the board can then pursue formal legal advice on.
- Provide legal perspective on risk related to public campaigning, partnerships and public communications.
PERSON SPECIFICATION
1. Finance Trustee -
- Proven expertise in charity fundraising and financial management.
- Experience of charity finance and fundraising is essential.
- Previous board or trustee experience.
- Ability to work collaboratively in a diverse team environment.
2. Community Organising and Campaigning Trustee -
- Understanding of power-building, community organising, or movement strategy (essential).
- Experience in grassroots organising and campaigns, advocacy, or social justice movements.3• Familiarity with political or social justice contexts in the UK.
- Willingness to support youth leadership and work in solidarity with young campaigners.
- Previous board or governance experience is helpful but not essential.
- Ability to work collaboratively in a diverse team environment.
3. Legal Trustee -
- Qualified legal professional (e.g. solicitor, barrister, legal academic) with UK-based experience.
- Knowledge of charity, or employment law desirable.
- Experience in risk, governance, or compliance, particularly in the charity sector.
- A commitment to social justice and supporting youth organising work.
- Ability to translate legal concepts clearly for non-specialist trustees.
- Ability to work collaboratively in a diverse team environment.
EXPECTATIONS & ENTITLEMENT
- Attend at least one training programme that we run, so that you understand the work we deliver
- Attend trustee meetings, which are held four times a year in London or virtually, and last between 3 expected to attend at least three each year.
- Participate in one of our sub-committees as may be required by the trustee role.
- Demonstrate commitment to The Advocacy Academy by supporting fundraising efforts.
- Serve for a term of three years and be able to stand for re-election for a further term and possibly two.
- Work with the Chair to review your performance
- Claim reasonable travel and accommodation expenses to attend meetings -4 hours - trustees are expected to attend at least three each year.

About the Stephen Dodgson Charitable Trust
The Stephen Dodgson Charitable Trust was established in 2015 to support musicians (including professional, student, schools music groups and community groups) and celebrate the music and legacy of British composer Stephen Dodgson (1924–2013). Stephen Dodgson had a long, distinguished and multifaceted career as a composer, Professor at the Royal College of Music and Radio 3 broadcaster. His musical voice could be both playful and deeply evocative, and he was much loved as a mentor to younger generations of musicians that worked with and taught.
The Trust awards grants to musicians, ensembles, festivals, educational institutions and arts organisations that perform, record or raise awareness of Dodgson’s music in line with the Trust’s charitable aims. The Trust responds to external grant applications and we also curate our own artistic and commemorative projects. A small, dedicated Board of Trustees works closely with the Trust CEO to guide and support the organisation’s work, ensuring funds are used thoughtfully and make a lasting, meaningful difference to the classical music community.
Recent projects also include a beautiful centenary book, a collection of essays and fond reminiscences about Stephen Dodgson – the man and the musician – which came out in 2024.

About the Role
The Trust is looking for a Treasurer to join our Board and take the lead in overseeing the charity’s finances. This is a key role, offering the chance to make a direct impact on the Trust’s ability to support musicians and projects with confidence and transparency.
The Treasurer is responsible for both strategic oversight and hands-on financial management — from preparing budgets and reports to supporting the Chair, CEO and fellow Trustees in financial planning and risk management. This rewarding role will help many interesting and worthwhile projects come to fruition and includes plenty of opportunities to enjoy attending concerts and other similar events. (Recent events include two epic concerts featuring major Dodgson works at St John’s Smith Square, the opening night of this year’s Barnes Music Festival and a Snape Maltings performance of Dodgson’s four-act opera Margaret Catchpole.)
This role would suit someone with financial management skills or similar, and a fair knowledge of and interest in classical music, arts funding, and charitable work more generally. A good communicator who enjoys working collaboratively with others and is enthusiastic about the opportunity to promote music and musicians – especially young musicians will thrive in this role.

Key Responsibilities
As a Trustee
- Help guide the Trust’s overall strategy and governance
- Ensure the charity’s funds are managed responsibly and in line with our objectives
- Contribute to grant-making decisions and long-term planning

As Treasurer
- Maintain an overview of the Trust’s financial health
- Oversee day-to-day financial operations: bookkeeping, invoice payments, bank statement reconciliations

- Ensure compliance with charity law and financial regulations, including annual reports to the Charity Commission

What the Trust Is Looking For

Essential:
- Financial management experience, ideally within or alongside the charity or arts sector

About Us
Age UK London is a charity that campaigns for an age-friendly London. We have been working to promote the interests of older Londoners for over 20 years and support the network of London Age UK’s and other older people’s organisations across all 33 boroughs.
Our CEO, Abigail Wood, joined us in 2020 and under her leadership Age UK London has gone through a significant period of consolidation and transformational change, streamlining activities and organisational structure, whilst maximising our impact.
Background to the role
A highly successful recent strategy day highlighted that the staff and trustees are closely aligned and have a strong sense of being part of one team, all pulling in one direction. We want to build on that by welcoming new Board members with key skills and expertise to enhance and further sharpen our work.
The Age UK London board currently comprises seven trustees, one of whose term will finish at our AGM in the autumn. Our chair, Tony Burch, took on the role in December 2024, having been a trustee since 2018. Our former chair, Imogen Clark, left having stayed on as a trustee until our CEO had returned from maternity leave in February of this year, and two other trustees resigned earlier this year for personal reasons.
We are a friendly, committed and effective board, and we foster a productive relationship with the Age UK London CEO and her team. We are passionate about campaigning to improve the lives of older Londoners.

Terms of Appointment
Appointments are for an initial term of three years, renewable for up to two further terms of three years.
Remuneration
This is a voluntary role and there is no remuneration. Reasonable expenses incurred in the role will be reimbursed in line with the organisation’s expenses policy.
Location: Generally, meetings are held remotely online, with an annual Board Strategy Day being held in London.
Time Commitment
There are currently 4 formal Board meetings per year and more regular sub-committee meetings. The board meetings currently take place on Zoom on a Wednesday evening for approximately 2.5 hours. Sub-committee dates and times are flexible.
Other time commitments will include ongoing liaison with the Chair of the Board, Chief Executive and other senior staff, as well as attendance at other meetings, such as interview panels and events as required. We anticipate the overall time commitment being approximately 3-4 days per month for the first 12-18 months, settling to 2 days per month after that.

About It’s Time:
It’s Time is a charity created by and for young adults who have experienced the death of a parent. Founded by people who know this grief first-hand, the charity ensures no one aged 18–35 has to navigate such loss alone. Through peer-led support, events, free group therapy, and tailored resources, It’s Time offers connection and understanding during an often isolating time. The charity also partners with universities, workplaces, and families to promote better bereavement support - recognising that grief doesn’t follow a timeline, and the help offered to young adults shouldn’t either.
The charity was founded in 2021 and we now run local peer support groups throughout England, have a year long waiting list for our group therapy and supports around 500 people in the online community. We recognise that as we grow our needs and those of our community are changing and are looking for someone skilled in charity growth to steer us into the next phase of our development.
About the Role
We’re looking for a skilled and committed Treasurer to join our Board of Trustees and lead the financial stewardship of our growing charity. This is a vital voluntary role for someone with strong financial expertise who wants to make a meaningful difference in a purpose-driven organisation.

What we ask of you:
- Trustee Board Members should expect to serve for a minimum of 12 months.
- Trustee Board Members are required to attend scheduled meetings with some ad hoc meetings where necessary.
- It is anticipated that the time commitment will be an approximate average 1.5 hours per week. This will mainly comprise of:
- Board meeting attendance (plus preparation and minutes) every 8 weeks.
- AGM attendance (plus preparation and minutes)
- Supporting our annual Disability Pride event.
- Occasional scheduled meetings with senior staff and/or Chair.
- As we are a very small charity, there could be occasions when extra time will be required (e.g. during the planning of new projects or dealing with any particular difficulties that arise), or where additional support would be appreciated (e.g. attending events, meeting members at project days)
Key Skills and Qualities:
- Lived Experience of disability (can be self-identified)
- A belief that Disabled people can and should be actively welcomed and included in our communities. An understanding that it is barriers in society that make that harder. This is called the Social Model of Disability.

About the role
We have made a number of key appointments to the Board and senior leadership team in the last 12-18 months, including a new Chair and Chief Executive. With some of our longest serving Trustees approaching the end of their terms, we are looking to make further appointments to our Board and committees to bring fresh, external perspective, challenge and leadership.

- Chair of Audit & Risk Committee:
This pivotal role will take over from our departing Chair of the committee when her second term concludes in April 2025. We need someone with substantial financial expertise and a deep understanding of governance and risk management who can provide both effective oversight and practical support. The ideal candidate will have recent experience with audit committees and external audits, bringing the technical knowledge and confidence to engage with auditors when necessary.
While we’re open to various professional backgrounds, some understanding of regulation and the charity context would be particularly valuable.
Above all, we need someone who understands what good governance, risk management and Board assurance looks like and can help us maintain the highest standards in a regulated environment.
- Finance, Investment & Resources Committee Member:
Our second Trustee will join a committee that covers not just finance, but the full spectrum of our resources, including estates, people, and digital infrastructure. This is very much about financial management and commercial acumen rather than purely technical accounting.
We’re looking for someone who has run operations and can contribute to the strategic changes we’re implementing. Whether you’re a CEO, COO, or senior leader with a financial background, we want someone who brings that broader perspective of leading and managing an organisation and can help support executive leaders.
Who we are looking for
Both roles require Trustees who align with our mission and are genuinely excited by our work with children with brain injury and neurodisability. You’ll be joining a Board that’s been significantly refreshed over the past two years. We’re particularly committed to increasing diversity on our Board and would be especially pleased to hear from candidates with lived experience of brain injury, neurodisability, disability or neurodiversity, those from diverse ethnic backgrounds, lower socio-economic backgrounds, or who identify as part of the LGBTQIA+ communities.

Time Commitment
We estimate both roles require approximately the equivalent of two days per month.
This includes preparation for and attendance at board meetings, which typically meet 6 times a year, including our annual strategy away day, and committee meetings (committees typically meet 4-6 times annually). Outside of the formal meeting schedule, it is likely that additional time for relationship building and ad hoc discussions with the executive team and fellow board members.
Board meetings take place in person at our Tadworth site, in Surrey, though we maintain flexibility for online participation where appropriate. Committee meetings are generally held online.

Duties
- Acting as a mentor to the Finance Manager, supporting her through this period of transition while Zebra puts in place a new structure and new financial systems

- Reviewing our quarterly accounts, annual accounts and reports and providing feedback

THE ROLE OF A TRUSTEE

DESIRABLE SKILLS/EXPERIENCE
One or more of the following:
- Fundraising and Income Generation - In an increasingly competitive and uncertain funding environment, we need trustees who can help us think creatively and strategically about income generation. This includes drawing on networks, identifying new opportunities, and supporting innovative fundraising approaches that will strengthen our financial resilience and enable us to deliver long-term impact for young people. We are also looking for a new Trustee to chair our new Income Generation sub-committee.
- Mental Health & Wellbeing - With youth mental health at a critical point, we seek trustees with expertise from educational, therapeutic, or public health settings to guide evidence-based strategies that help young people thrive.
- Education Sector - As our work is deeply rooted in schools and learning environments, we value trustees with knowledge of the education sector. Your insight will help us navigate its priorities and challenges, forge strong partnerships, and ensure our programmes complement and enhance the role of education in young people’s lives.
- Social Sustainability - We are seeking trustees who understand how to build inclusive cultures, systems, and communities. Your expertise will help us embed equity and belonging across our organisation, partnerships, and programmes, ensuring every young person feels seen, valued, and able to thrive.
- Marketing, PR, or Communications - We need trustees with senior-level experience in communications, marketing, or public/government relations to help amplify our voice, strengthen our brand, and influence key audiences. Your skills will ensure our message resonates with supporters, partners, and decision-makers.
- Legal and Compliance - Robust governance is critical to maintaining the trust of our stakeholders and the integrity of our work. We are seeking trustees with expertise in legal and compliance matters to help us navigate an evolving regulatory landscape, manage risk effectively, and ensure our policies and practices meet the highest standards.
GOVERNANCE
The Board is chaired by Rebecca Crook and supported by a strong leadership team including CEO Dr Tessy Ojo CBE. The Nominations Committee, a sub-committee of the Board, leads the trustee recruitment process. We are committed to inclusive recruitment and welcome candidates from all backgrounds. In particular, we welcome and encourage applications from young people, and those from black, Asian and global majority backgrounds.

INTERVIEW PROCESS
Youth Panel Interview (Online) 30 minutes - You will meet with members of our Youth Panel. This will include structured questions and a 5-minute presentation about yourself, focusing on your background, motivations for applying, and what you hope to bring to the trustee role
Nominations Committee Interview (Online) 45 minutes - You will also meet with our Nominations Committee. This will involve structured interview questions focusing on your skills, experience, and alignment with our organisational values and strategic priorities

APPENDIX
Purpose: The primary purpose of the Nominations Committee is to identify, evaluate, and recommend candidates for appointment as Trustees of The Diana Award. This committee ensures that the Board has the appropriate mix of skills, expertise, and diversity to effectively govern the organisation and fulfil its mission.
Membership: The Chair of the Nominations Committee (a Trustee) A minimum of two other Trustees CEO (ex officio member) Any additional members as deemed necessary (e.g., board secretary or HR support)
Frequency of Meetings: The committee will meet as required, typically monthly, and more frequently when necessary for the recruitment process
Key Responsibilities:
- Review the current composition of the Board of Trustees to identify gaps in skills and diversity
- Develop a recruitment strategy that aligns with the strategic direction of The Diana Award
- Source and evaluate potential Trustee candidates
- Conduct interviews and assessments of candidates’ skills, expertise, and commitment to the mission
- Provide recommendations for new Trustee appointments to the full Board
- Ensure that diversity and inclusivity are considered in all recruitment activities
- Ensure compliance with legal and governance requirements related to Trustee recruitment
- Onboard new Trustees and ensure they understand their roles and responsibilities
Reporting Structure: The Nominations Committee reports to the Board of Trustees, providing recommendations for Trustee appointments
