Volunteering in the shop

Our Holywood, Belfast Shop Volunteers are in the middle of it all, and there’s plenty to get involved with. You might be sorting and pricing stock, engaging with customers, ringing items through the till, creating fantastic window displays or keeping our shop floor looking organised.

It’s up to you how much you commit. We have volunteers who support for a couple of hours a week and some do more. Many people volunteer either a morning or an afternoon each week - this is something that will be discussed at the selection stage, after you’ve applied.

It’s a great opportunity to visit the shop, meet some of our existing volunteers and have a go at some of the tasks that you would be supporting with as a shop volunteer. We need dedicated volunteers to work at our Kentish Town store. If you have a passion for fashion (especially second-hand), amazing customer service skills and you are keen to learn new skills, then this opportunity is for you. As a volunteer you will also be involved in receiving, sorting, steaming, and pricing our lovely donations, serving at the till, and using your creativity to create displays around the shop. Training will be provided. As a volunteer, you will be helping to raise money for the Octavia Foundation and support the work we do in the local community.

About The Role

You’ll be supporting our Marketing, Learning, and Facilities teams by compiling information we use to inspire visitors to support wetlands, and helping to provide information online to encourage visitors to support us, in helping wetland nature thrive.

Your tasks could include:

• updating databases and external event websites
• organizing digital and physical files
• preparing material for events and corporate functions
• processing ticket requests from schools and charities
• helping occasionally with ad hoc, related activities

You’ll also help to respond quickly to supporter inquiries, helping visitors with information to get them onsite to connect with wetland nature.

You can enjoy your break-times in nature and meet fellow volunteers and staff in the break room. 

Volunteers are an essential part of the WWT team. You'll get a warm welcome, including information on training, equipment and anything else you need. 

About You

You will enjoy this role if you like to work behind the scenes, assisting a busy team in the main office to ensure supporters and potential visitors are aware of WWT. This role is crucial in ensuring teams are able to complete their work and access data quickly when needed.

If you have a passion for nature, enjoy office work, and are task oriented you will enjoy a sense of accomplishment this role can provide. 

The role requires a good working knowledge of Microsoft Office and competency working via and using the internet. Experience on Microsoft Teams is also a bonus.

There is the opportunity to learn new software packages and office procedures.

Role purpose:
To contribute to the board’s role by...

• Acting in the best interest of Hospiscare and its beneficiaries
• Acting as an ambassador and spokesperson for the charity.
• Providing strategic direction, setting overall policy, defining desired outcomes, setting targets, and evaluating performance against targets
• Working closely with the Executive Team, whilst retaining independent oversight of activities
• Holding the Executive Team to account
• Ensuring that Hospiscare complies with its governing document, charity law, company law and any other relevant legislation or regulations
• Ensuring that Hospiscare pursues its objectives as defined in its governing document.
• Ensuring that resources are used exclusively in pursuance of its objectives, charitable purposes, long-term financial viability, and the safeguarding of assets.

Role details:

Time commitment/location:
Trustees will be expected to attend four board meetings, circa four
committee meetings and one to two away days a year and be fully
prepared for these meetings. These meetings start at 4pm on a
Tuesday and are held at Searle House in Exeter. We also have sub-
committees and trustees are encouraged to join where their
skills/experience will had specific value.
Trustees are expected to travel within the area served by
Hospiscare and occasionally out of area.
Term:
Trustees are appointed for a three-year term and may serve a
maximum of three terms.

About Candlelighters

Each year, over 150 children in Yorkshire are diagnosed with cancer. When a child is diagnosed, lives are turned upside down instantly: not just for the child but the entire family. Getting well again can be a long and challenging journey, emotionally, physically, and financially.

Supporting children and families throughout that journey is why our charity, Candlelighters, was formed more than 40 years ago. Our mission is to bring light to every family affected by childhood cancer across Yorkshire by providing emotional, practical and financial support, as well as bringing hope, by investing in vital research to improve the outcomes and lives of children with cancer.

Purpose of the Role and Key Activities

The Family Support Office Volunteer provides administrative and practical help to the Family Support Team, who play a key role in running events and groups and providing support to our families across Yorkshire.

· Recording and updating information on our database.

· Reviewing and updating support resources.

· Corresponding with families, supporters and potential volunteers.

· Answering the phone, transferring calls and taking messages.

· Making phone-calls to confirm appointments, speak to event attendees etc

· Analysing questionnaire feedback.

· Making up new patient bags.

· Sending out invitations.

· Helping to prepare resources, merchandise and equipment for events.

· Stock taking and alerting the team when merchandise needs restocking.

· Franking letters and parcels.

· Providing occasional cover for Front of House (answering the door to families and supporter, making coffees, answering phones, taking messages).

· Providing administrative support.

· Assisting other teams within the charity with tasks and activities as required.

· Maintaining professional boundaries at all times.

· Adhering to Candlelighters’ policies and procedures.

We are looking for a volunteer who:

· Are confident, friendly and approachable

· Have a fun and positive outlook

· Is confident on word and excel

· Can work well and remain calm under pressure

· Are proactive and able to use own initiative

· Are hardworking, reliable and organised

· Are able to move furniture (tables and chairs) and boxes

· Are able to climb multiple flights of stairs

· Are able to maintain professional boundaries and follow Candlelighters Policies and Procedures.

As a children’s charity it is essential that we safeguard our families, employees, supporters and volunteers. You will be asked about unspent conditional cautions and convictions on your application form and the nature of the caution or conviction will determine whether you are able to volunteer for us or not.

 This role is subject to an enhanced criminal record check, which is processed through the Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS).

Our Derby Shop Volunteers are in the middle of it all, and there’s plenty to get involved with. You might be sorting and pricing stock, engaging with customers, ringing items through the till, creating fantastic window displays or keeping our shop floor looking organised.

It’s up to you how much you commit. We have volunteers who support for a couple of hours a week and some do more. Many people volunteer either a morning or an afternoon each week - this is something that will be discussed at the selection stage, after you’ve applied.

By providing live-saving short-term help, and pushing for deep-rooted social change, we help children take, their future into their own hands. We believe every child has the right to learn. Every child should have good food to fuel their bodies and every child should have medicine when they're sick. 

Skills and experiences we seek

We welcome applications from people with a wide range of skills and experiences. You don’t need any retail or shop experience as full training will be provided. What’s important to us is that you are a team player, open to learning and to follow our policies as well as be an excellent representative for Save the Children.

We know that our shop teams are stronger when they are inclusive and representative of their communities. Everybody can make a real difference. People come to us for all sorts of reasons, from all backgrounds, and we will do what we can to find a role that works for you.

What happens next?

After you’ve filled in an application, we will invite you for an informal trial shift. It’s a great opportunity to visit the shop, meet some of our existing volunteers and have a go at some of the tasks that you would be supporting with as a shop volunteer. Hopefully allowing you to get a feel for the role and make sure it’s for you. We also ask for a couple of references (these don’t have to be formal workplace ones, just someone who has known you for over 6 months and isn’t related).
