About the role
Without the help and support we receive from our Lead Volunteers and volunteer teams we wouldn’t be successful at what we do. Our Lead Volunteers play a key role by supporting the shop management team with the day to day running and management of our shops - helping us to raise crucial funds from the sale of pre-loved, donated stock to fund Mind's vital mental health support services.
Our shops are vibrant hubs in local communities across England and Wales. In our Lead Volunteer role, you’ll play a key part in building this community, helping to create a culture where every person is valued and supported - and where people have fun!
You can gain a wide variety of knowledge, skills and experience by becoming one of our valued Lead Volunteers, including:

About Mind Retail
Mind Retail are a network of almost 200 shops across England and Wales, generating a net income of around £21 million per year. We have ambitious plans to grow over the next few years and we're going to be fighting for mental health in a way we never have before. Why did you want to become a Lead Volunteer?
I chose to volunteer at Mind, specifically because of the cause – I support the charity in what they want to achieve. Mind also supported me through the lockdown period during the pandemic, which I found very isolating.
I’ve volunteered for Mind for 20 years - I started volunteering for Mind in 2005. At the time, I had a full-time job, but I wanted to try volunteering. I’ve volunteered in a number of Mind shops, including Wallsend, Whitley Bay, Gateshead (which was where I became a Lead Volunteer) and finally, North Shields.
I wanted to become a Lead Volunteer to gain more experience, which I can then pass onto others. I now undertake key holder duties in my current shop. It was a little scary to begin with, but there was plenty of support from the wider region and I feel really proud to now be doing the role.
What knowledge and skills have you gained or developed whilst being in the Lead Volunteer role?
I’ve developed my technology skills – I’ve learnt how to use the till, how to use the computer including emails and Microsoft Teams, how to complete eLearning and the new Gift Aid hub. I struggled a bit before with technology, so it’s really helped me to be exposed to it more. I’ve also developed cash handling skills and how to deal with external contractors. My confidence has really grown and I’m also now able to cover local stores too!
What do you enjoy most about being a Lead Volunteer?
I really enjoy giving amazing customer service and working with the team of staff and volunteers – we have lots of fun whilst we work! The shop has a great atmosphere. My Shop Manager has said she couldn’t do without me! I would really recommend for anyone to come and volunteer with Mind – it’s a great way to meet new people.

Why did you want to become a Lead Volunteer?
I wanted to become a Lead Volunteer because I wanted to take on more responsibilities and keep myself as productive as possible. By taking on more responsibilities, I’m able to support the wider team with certain activities within the shop. It’s also helped me become less focused on my myself and my own problems. I suffer from low self-esteem and felt that by becoming a Lead Volunteer, it would help strengthen my self-worth.
What knowledge and skills have you gained or developed whilst being in the Lead Volunteer role?
As I have never worked in retail, becoming a Lead Volunteer has given me more insight into how the retail industry and how Mind Retail operates day-to-day. I have become more patient and not as isolated as before. My communication skills have improved too.
What do you enjoy most about being a Lead Volunteer?
Certain customers are confiding in me about their mental health. I find it great to be able to assist and provide some support. We all just need an ear to listen…
It’s also great to be able to make decisions too. The team I work with at the shop are very supportive and understanding – they look after me and I feel like a belong to a small family. The team really understand that our shops are not just shops! They’re a place where everyone, including those with mental health problems, can feel safe and listened to.

Lambourne End Centre for Outdoor Learning invests in people and their potential. Established in 2004 and nicknamed the “54-acre classroom”, our work uses a unique combination of adventurous and environmental activities, a working farm and horticulture gardens to reconnect people of all ages, backgrounds and abilities with nature through outdoor learning.
Our mission is “to support people to overcome obstacles in life through nurturing them in nature, encouraging them in play and curiosity, challenging them in risk and adventure, and engaging them in outdoor learning. The Centre is located in south west Essex and works with over 18,000 young people each year on a wide range of programmes that improve health and wellbeing and foster personal development, using our unique blend activities. We do this by using the activities to generate a wide range of tailored programmes designed to encourage team building, problem solving and communication skills, as well as build confidence, enthuse and motivate, and raise aspirations.
Over the past ten years, the Centre has grown significantly its revenue, it’s profitability and its influence, such that it is now in a strong position and faces huge demand for its services.
The Role
As the Chair of Trustees, you will play a pivotal role in ensuring effective governance and strategic oversight. Working closely with the Board of Trustees and the Chief Executive, you will help steer the organisation toward its goals while upholding our values and ensuring accountability. The role has become vacant due to the retirement of the current Chair.
Key Responsibilities
· Provide leadership to the Board of Trustees, fostering a culture of collaboration and inclusivity.
· Chair board meetings effectively, ensuring productive discussions and sound decision-making.
· Work with the Chief Executive Officer to set and review strategic priorities and objectives.
· Act as an ambassador for the organisation, representing its interests to stakeholders and communities.
· Support the recruitment and development of a diverse and skilled Board of Trustees.
· Oversee compliance with legal and regulatory obligations.
· Ensure the organisation remains financially sustainable and aligned with its mission.
What We Are Looking For
We are seeking a dedicated and inspiring leader who shares our passion for creating a better future. The ideal candidate will bring:
· Experience in governance or leadership roles, ideally within non-profit, public, or corporate sectors.
· Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills to build strong relationships with trustees, staff, and external stakeholders.

· A good understanding of charity governance and relevant legislation (or a willingness to develop this knowledge).

Time Commitment and Term
The Chair of Trustees role is voluntary, though reasonable expenses will be reimbursed. The time commitment is approximately 10 hours/month, including board meetings, sub-committee involvement, and occasional events.

The mentoring project at Esteem invites members of the community to share their skills and experience by mentoring a young person with similar interests.
Mentoring is an important part of our organisation and runs alongside Work Experience opportunities, providing tailored volunteer opportunities to young people aged 14-26, social activities and wellbeing support. Creating space for young adults to thrive within their lives and communities.
Role Purpose
This is an exciting opportunity to volunteer for a charity that is passionate about giving young people the chance to develop their skills and confidence, both for their own benefit and for that of society as a whole.
You can make a difference by mentoring 14-26 year olds who are developing or discovering their potential.
The mentors’ role is to support young people reach their next step focusing on their vocational development and encouraging progression into or maintaining Education, Employment or Training. The profile of many of Esteem’s young adults is that they have low levels of confidence and may be quite anxious; some young people may be neurodiverse including have a history of mental health problems, they also may have faced homelessness and other life affecting issues including the effects of long term unemployment

You will be based at Esteem’s Shoreham office but may meet your mentee in a public place such as a coffee shop, if that is what you both prefer and meets safeguarding requirements.

You will be skills matched with a young person who will have similar interests, experience or an interest in your professional field. You will support your mentee by identifying and highlighting their skills and establishing realistic and achievable goals by breaking them down into manageable steps.

You will enter notes onto our database system UpShot after each meeting with your mentee and will be asked to fill in an outcome form at the conclusion of your mentoring relationship.
Principal tasks and responsibilities

To meet with your mentee regularly (once a week or once a fortnight) at a convenient time for you both either at the Esteem’s office or in a public place like a cafe.

To offer ongoing vocational support to your mentee and support them to access services (such as in-house Counselling or from external organisations) if they need help with any issues they are dealing with.

To support your mentee through their vocational setting, either volunteering at Esteem or within their personal, work or educational setting.
-
To offer positive feedback and aim to build self-confidence with your mentee.

To keep up to date notes of your meetings.
-
Complete regular reviews with the mentee and create a clear action plan if appropriate.

Attend all relevant training to your role.

To report any safeguarding concerns to the Safeguarding Team.

To maintain the required level of confidentiality in all tasks and communications.

Person Specification
Experience
For this round of recruitment we are looking primarily for those who work in the creative industry and those who may have started their own business and/or have an entrepreneurial background. That being said, we are more than happy to accept applications from those who feel they have other skills and experience that could benefit young adults.
Whilst some experience of mentoring or supporting young adults would be helpful this is something we will cover in the day’s training.

At The Usual Place in Dumfries, we are more than a café; we are a unique, skills academy where the potential of young people with learning disabilities is nurtured, confidence is built, futures are shaped, and an inclusive workforce is created. We have proved time and time again that when young people are given the right support, they don’t just participate in their communities—they enrich them.

This year marks 10 years since The Usual Place first opened, responding directly to young people with additional support needs who asked for opportunities to learn, work, and be part of something meaningful. In that time, we have supported thousands of young people, many of whom would have otherwise been marginalised and unseen.
The Commitment
The Trustee Board generally meets every 6 weeks on a hybrid basis and there is an expectation that trustees will also take opportunities throughout their term to get involved, attend events and meet the young people in the Café.

A full induction will be provided including training in safeguarding and governance. As a third sector trustee appointment, the post is unremunerated. A PVG is required for this post as it is considered a regulated role.

SANE is a UK-wide mental health charity working to improve the quality of life of anyone affected by mental illness. It aims to raise awareness and understanding of all mental health conditions; fight to improve frontline mental health services for individuals and carers; provide support, information and guidance through its helpline, email and text support and Online Forum; and promote and host research into causes, treatments and therapies.
About the role:
We are now looking for people interested in providing compassionate support to those affected by mental health problems, particularly people with severe mental illness, and carers, families and friends. As a volunteer, you will provide support on-site, in our Islington offices, by telephone. You will also form a close team with our other skilled volunteers and shift leads.

About Candlelighters
Candlelighters provides financial, emotional and practical support to families affected by childhood cancer in Yorkshire. We support around 150 new families each year and our work ensures the whole family unit is supported in these extraordinary circumstances.
We support children and their families from diagnosis and throughout their journey, including providing financial support, practical help in hospital, much needed breaks, as well as emotional and well-being support at our Family Support Centre (The Square) and Family Support Bus.
Purpose of the Role and Key Activities
Candlelighters needs to fundraise £2million every year to continue providing services to families. The Administration and Office Support Volunteer provides crucial administrative and office support to the Fundraising Team and is central to helping the team raise the money we need to continue supporting children and families affected by childhood cancer in Yorkshire.
Activities vary, but may include

The Role
Once you have successfully completed the training, you will be offered a place on our helpline. Each volunteer works the same shift every week, with the same volunteers – so you can make friends and support each other on shift!
You can come into our offices to do your shift or work remotely if you have a confidential and quiet space at home.
Your role will be to offer empathic, non-judgemental listening support to the women who contact us on the phone or through our webchat, with calls or chats lasting up to 50 minutes. You will also take more administrative calls, where you will talk about our counselling services and calls where you need to signpost to other services. Our training will fully equip you for this as well.
A three-hour shift includes:
30 minutes to check in with your supervisor at the beginning
2 hours taking calls or chats on the helpline
30-45 minutes to debrief with the other volunteers and your supervisor at the end of your shift
You will also be expected to attend group supervision with all the other volunteers, which runs in the evening on alternating Mondays and Wednesdays each month.
There will always be a supervisor available during your shifts to support you, and we often run extra training to support the work you do on the helpline.
You
We are looking for volunteers who are enthusiastic and interested in supporting other women to improve their mental health and wellbeing. You will be honest, friendly and reliable with good communication skills, as well as a non-judgmental and patient listener.
The helpline role can be challenging and emotionally demanding at times. Therefore, we need women who have adequate life experience and feel emotionally resilient enough to take on the role. We welcome volunteers with personal experience of mental health and other relevant issues, but we require you to have had a one-year period of stability at least before starting the training.
While most of our helpline opening hours are during the daytime, we have two evenings shifts on Mondays and Tuesdays.

Volunteer Bike Repairer at Claygate Youth and Community Hub
Role description
As a volunteer bike repairer at Claygate Youth and Community Hub’s monthly Bike Repair Cafe, you will work with a friendly team of repairers to complete basic bike fixes helping to get the local community cycling! You will have your own station to work on the bikes but often our repairers work together. If you are interested, you will also have the opportunity to mentor young people who are keen to learn how to maintain their bikes, helping to ensure they are safe on the roads.
At Claygate Youth and Community Hub, our mission is to ensure young people have a safe space in which they can thrive learning key skills and accessing vital support networks to facilitate a smooth transition into adulthood. We also want to contribute in any way we can to uphold the strong sense of community within Claygate so a bike repair service for the community which involves our young people is a great way to kill two birds with one stone!
We have held three bike repair sessions so far helping fix up over 50 bikes and welcoming over 100 members of the community.
If you’re passionate about bikes, sustainable forms of transport and/or helping young people, this is the perfect opportunity for you!

Nine years after the Brexit referendum, we are navigating ongoing challenges affecting EU citizens’ communities. We are continuing to build power from the ground up, empowering people to get their voices heard. Your contribution will be crucial to making change happen.

We are the leading organisation representing EU citizens in the UK. Our vision is a world where EU citizens can thrive, reach their potential and have an equal voice in UK society. Our work ranges from informing people of their rights and community organising of EU citizens’ communities, to holding the Government to account on the implementation of the Withdrawal Agreement and promoting access to justice.
We are a grassroots and non-partisan organisation, working with a variety of stakeholders, from MPs to NGOs, legal advisors and the media on specific issues affecting migrants’ rights. We regularly engage with the Home Office and its monitoring bodies to advocate for change.
We were formed through the efforts of volunteers from many different backgrounds who came together in the immediate aftermath of the Brexit referendum in 2016. We hold on to that can-do, nimble spirit and friendly and non-hierarchical collegiality.
In 2024, the3million’s contribution towards creating lasting and significant change for EU citizens living in the UK was recognised at the EmpowerEU Awards, in the "Outstanding Achievement” category.
the3million was incorporated as a limited by guarantee not-for-profit company with Companies House in November 2017. As such, the role of members of the Board of Directors is similar, though not identical, to that of Charity Trustees.
What does the role involve?
You will join a small board of professionals committed to helping EU citizens in the UK. We are specifically seeking directors with expertise, skills and knowledge in any or several of the following backgrounds: fundraising, legal compliance, HR, risk management, community organising, racial justice and safeguarding.
As a the3million non-executive director, you’ll play a vital role in keeping the organisation on track with its objectives. You will apply your professional experience towards shaping our strategy on fundraising, governance, campaigning and other areas of work.

As directors at the3million, you will have responsibility to:
- Ensure the3million is meeting its aims and objectives and acting in line with any relevant legislation or regulations
- Act in the best interests of the organisation

We’re part of the Royal Air Force Air Cadets, a national youth organisation empowering 12- to 20-year-olds through flying, adventure training, sports, and leadership development.
West Mercian Wing supports over 900 cadets across 27 Squadrons in Herefordshire, Worcestershire, Shropshire, the Black Country, and overseas in Cyprus.
Each squadron has a Civilian Welfare Committee, a team of trustees who support the squadron by overseeing governance, fundraising, and building community partnerships. Trustees are vital in ensuring squadrons can continue providing incredible opportunities for cadets.

What’s involved?
Meetings are structured but friendly, typically every three months for around two hours. A typical agenda includes:

Opportunities for progression
Trustees can take on leadership roles within their squadron, support squadrons at sector or wing level, or even contribute to regional and national RAF Air Cadets governance. Some trustees also transition into squadron volunteer roles, working directly with cadets.

Big Syn Institute is a part of the Centre for Big Synergy and has been organising the Big Syn International Film Festival (BSIFF) since 2019.
The partnerships manager will work closely with senior leadership to identify and engage in commercial and strategic relationships with key partners, both online and offline, for the biggest film festival and awards, of its kind - Big Syn Institute's BSIFF, London.
Since 2019, the festival has reached over 50M people and in over 120 countries. Through relevant shorts, features, animations, documentaries, CSR videos and Public Service Videos, Charity films, the festival advocates the United Nations 17 Global Goals and also celebrates the work of UK's marginalised filmmakers.
OSCAR, BAFTA and EMMY award-winners, as well as other luminaries from film and media, sustainability, and policy have been part of the festival and have supported it since inception. Winners from the festival have eventually won OSCARS and EMMY awards
What will you be doing?
We are looking for a motivated networker with a can-do attitude who enjoys networking and establishing relationships. The partnerships manager, working closely with our team must be able to:
- Take ownership as one of most important people associated with the festival and awards ceremony
- Think strategically to identify and establish new partnerships whilst exploring new engagements with the existing partner network
- Communicate with a very high professional standard with the leadership of partner organisations, some being the biggest corporations in their sector
- Maintain a database with existing and new partnerships and updates on progress made
What are we looking for?
A committed and meticulous person, passionate about making the world a more sustainable, safer and peaceful place
- Proven experience (3 or more years) of communicating and working with senior leadership across organisations and identifying potential partners and stakeholders
- Ability to research and maintain database of potential partners, work on lead generation and follow ups
- Prompt communication and timekeeping, ability to deliver on time
- Maintain confidentiality and utmost standards of professional etiquette.
What difference will you make?
Over 85% of people in the UK and even more, globally, are unaware of the UN's Sustainable Development Goals (UN SDGs)let alone take any steps to create a more sustainable world for themselves and in the process for others in this complexly interconnected world.
This highlights the need for such initiatives to educate the British as well as global societies about the UN SDGs. Your contributions can educate and inspire millions to act on the SDGs and bring positive changes that will impact all of us in this complexly interconnected world.
Most importantly your efforts will ensure that the film festival and the UK's marginalised filmmakers (LGBTQI+, women, disabled and ethnic minorities) get even more visibility, thus furthering the motto of the festival to celebrate inclusion and diversity whilst inspiring the civic society to act on the Global Goals. It will also help partner organisations join forces and work in synergy to amplify the impact of the initiative through communal as well as individual efforts. Thus, benefitting more lives that we would have helped acting alone.
