About us: 

The Refugee and Migrant Forum of Essex and London (RAMFEL) is one of the largest immigration and asylum advice charities in the UK, supporting refugees, asylum seekers and vulnerable migrants to access justice. An OISC level 3 accredited organisation, we represent clients at all stages of the immigration and asylum process, up to and including the Upper Tribunal of the Immigration and Asylum Chamber.

We also actively campaign for a fairer and more humane immigration system. RAMFEL caseworkers therefore have the opportunity to work on systemic and strategic challenges and support broader advocacy work.

We particularly welcome and encourage applications from Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic individuals, and those who are migrants or refugees, and who have lived experience of the impact of UK immigration policy and/or of rough sleeping. This includes individuals with direct experience or experience gained through supporting family members with the challenges posed by immigration and asylum practices- those who have been or could have been clients of RAMFEL.

Purpose of the role:

Our trustees play a vital role in making sure that the Refugee and Migrant Forum of Essex and London (RAMFEL) achieves its core purpose. They oversee the overall management and administration of the charity. They also ensure that RAMFEL has a clear strategy and that our work and goals are in line with our vision. Just as importantly, they support and challenge the CEO and senior management to enable us to grow and thrive, and through this, achieve our mission.

Board members have a collective responsibility. This means that trustees always act as a group and not as individuals.

Duties:

• Support and provide advice on RAMFEL’s purpose, vision, goals and activities.
• Review and approve organisation strategies and policies, and monitor and evaluate their effective and efficient implementation.
• Oversee RAMFEL’s financial plans, budgets, and statements, and monitor and evaluate progress
• Ensure that key risks are being identified, monitored and controlled effectively.
• Provide support and challenge to RAMFEL’s management team in the exercise of their delegated authority and affairs.
• Keep abreast of changes in RAMFEL’s operating environment.
• Contribute to regular reviews of RAMFEL’s own governance.
• Contribute to the broader promotion of RAMFEL’s objects, aims and reputation by applying your skills, expertise, knowledge and contacts.

As a small charity, there will be times when trustees will need to be actively involved beyond Board meetings and sub-committees. This may involve providing advice and guidance on new initiatives, reviewing or advising on operational documents (e.g. operational and business plans, new team structures, outreach and engagement events) or other issues in which the trustee has special expertise.

What we are looking for

We are looking for people willing to bring energy, enthusiasm and commitment to the role, and who will broaden the diversity of thinking on our board. We are furthermore particularly looking for those who can contribute one or more of the following:

• Migrants or refugees, who have lived experience of the impact of immigration policy and practice
• Expertise in RAMFEL’s core service delivery, especially regarding advice, immigration or legal services
• Networking and fundraising ability
• Experience of campaigning and/or external communications
• Organisational and administrative skills

Previous governance experience is desirable but not essential and we will provide a full induction to the organisation and the workings of the Board.

This is a fully voluntary and unpaid position.  Reasonable expenses will be reimbursement.

What we’re looking for

Terms of appointment

• Trustees are appointed for a three-year term of office. Our Articles of Association state that one third of the trustees will retire from office at each AGM with the longest serving trustees retiring first. Trustees can stand for re-election at the same AGM
• This is a voluntary position, but reasonable expenses are reimbursed.
• Time commitment- approximately 8 hours per month
• Board meetings- attending four Board meetings annually (currently on Tuesday evenings). We alternate between meeting in-person at WCC’s office in Waterloo and online
• Sub-committees- we have two subcommittees (Finance & Operations, and Clinical) that meet in between Board meetings, with individual trustees attending one or more of these depending on skills and preferences.
• Two half day strategy days a year and training where needed
• Reading Board papers in advance, being involved in discussions, advising on specialist areas
• We hold an Annual General Meeting with all staff and members.

Time commitment

Approximately 8 hours per month
There are four board meetings a year, currently on Tuesday evenings – we alternate between meeting in-person at WCC’s office in Waterloo and online. We hold an Annual General Meeting with all staff and members. We have two sub committees that meet in between Board meetings, with individual trustees attending one or more of these depending on preferences and time commitment.

Each year we seek new volunteers to join our board of trustees, bringing with them the skills and experience we need to work for a better future for nature, people and the green spaces we all love across Rotherham and Sheffield.

As well as an enthusiasm and passion for our work, we are looking for people with the skills to help govern the Trust.Experience of working in a decision-making group is very helpful as well as a good local knowledge of Rotherham and/or Sheffield. You would need to be able to commit to attending our Annual General Meeting (held in October) and at least four board meetings per year, which require some preparatory work..

This year we are especially keen to hear from people:

• Have expertise in strategic HR, staff health & wellbeing support
• Commercial, business acumen, profit for purpose experience (with reference to our consultancy)
• Have a good knowledge of communities and/or natural environment in Rotherham
• Can represent more of our diverse community in Sheffield & Rotherham

We are working in partnership with Edmund Sawyer Almshouse, a charity first established in the 17th Century for six women in need in Kettering. The building is Grade 11 star listed. It is reputed to be the oldest building in Kettering. The charity had fallen into poor condition in 2018, and the board of the Leonard Hackett Memorial Trust stepped in and took over the charity and rescued the buildings carrying out immediate refurbishment.

They are now looking to recruit Trustees to join its Board of Trustees, which sets and approves the charity’s strategy ensuring the charity's continued success and sustainability, overseeing the ongoing care of the historic buildings, and ensuring the residents feel supported, valued, and at home. 

You’ll be part of a small team responsible for protecting and enhancing a vital community asset, balancing tradition with modern needs. 

Edmund Sawyer is particularly keen to hear from people who can bring the following skills and experience:

• Finance with a charity background desirable not essential 
• Health and welfare of elderly people
• Management of social housing/Local Authority background/Regulation of social housing
• Law/Paralegal 
• Charity governance

As a trustee of Edmund Sawyer Almshouse, you will be safeguarding the legacy of this charitable institution, ensuring the buildings are properly maintained and cared for and supporting residents and making sure they feel secure and welcome in their homes.  You will also be part of the strategy to guide the future direction of the Almshouse to meet evolving community needs.

Re-Vision is a small charity based in Queen’s Park, London, founded in 1988. We run professionally accredited part-time courses for adults to train as Counsellors and Psychotherapists and are looking for Trustees to join our Board.

Re-Vision is a registered charity. It is a small, not for profit counselling and psychotherapy training organisation providing outstanding, in-depth training with a soulful perspective. We are seeking a senior marketing professional to volunteer with Catalyst in shaping and embedding our strategic marketing approach. This role will lead the development of a clear, actionable marketing strategy; introduce planning, reporting, and content systems; and support key campaigns targeting, underrepresented communities, and funders. You' will coach and mentor our Marketing Manager, helping to build and shift the culture towards proactive, insight-driven marketing. Experience in the charity sector, audience segmentation, and digital channels is essential. A background in CSR and community mental health is desirable. This short-term placement will deliver lasting impact through sustainable tools, confident teams, and clear messaging.

A charity  based in  Croydon, Surrey, London, UK is looking for volunteer Charity Volunteer Assistants; to volunteer 30 unpaid hours per week. The Charity serves a multi ethnic community especially people from Black and ethnic minority backgrounds. 

Responsibilities:

• To assist in the delivery of events (ours and those we are invited to), projects and our yearly summer community event.
• To assist in the daily collection and drop off of Greggs after day produce to various soup kitchens

The difference you will make to cats and people

As a charity we are able to help thousands of cats each year thanks to the generous donations we receive from members of the public. Our fundraising volunteers use their passion for cats and people to raise the vital funds needed to help more cats and kittens in need. As a fundraising volunteer we want to support you to fundraise in whatever way suits you best, whether that’s organising a fundraising event, fundraising online, promoting fundraising activities on social media, completing administration or supporting the development of new fundraising ideas! Whatever your skill set, this could be the role for you!

• Provide you with access to learning, development and engagement opportunities

What we need from you

This is a really flexible role, you can choose what you’d like to get involved with, for example: 

• face-to-face fundraising. Organising or helping with fundraising events, running supermarket collections and fundraising stands, monitoring collection tins 

• online fundraising. Setting up online appeals and writing impactful cat case studies that maximise donations

• marketing. Spreading the word about our fundraising activities, for example on social media and with the local press  

• completing administration. Processing donations, sorting and recording donated goods, completing Gift Aid paperwork

● championing our work. Getting involved with developing new fundraising ideas and increasing community engagement

● photography. Capturing images of cats in care, cats we are helping, events and all things Cats Protection

Time expectation

This is a flexible role that can fit around your other commitments to suit you. You’ll be part of a team raising vital funds while having fun in the process!
