Could you spare four hours a week to support young cancer patients and their families?

When a child is diagnosed with cancer it threatens everything, for them and their family. At a time when they should be busy being children, enjoying their rollercoaster teenage years or finding their feet at university, life becomes full of fear. Fear of treatment, but also of families being torn apart, of overwhelming money worries, mental health stretched to breaking point, of having nowhere to turn, no one to talk to.

At Young Lives vs Cancer, we get that. We are the charity that helps children and young people (0-25) and their families find the strength to face whatever cancer throws at them.

There are many small organisations that help families with a child that has a life threatening illness, by providing grants, holidays or wishes. We want our families to take advantage of this but applying for this extra support can often be overwhelming or another thing on the to do list at a stressful time in their lives. That’s where you come in. Could you give 4 hours a week to support our families to apply for grants, holidays and wishes?

What you’ll be doing

You’ll be working directly with our families who are known to the Young Lives vs Cancer Service at Birmingham Children’s Hospital and Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham to help them apply to organisations which can offer grants, treats, wishes or holidays to make the cancer journey more manageable. Your role will be both researching and identifying organisations offering additional practical support (such as additional grants) and practical opportunities for joy (wish granting and special offers), and then supporting families to apply to these organisations.

There is scope and opportunity in this role for development into liaising with other charities.

About you

• You’ll need to be super organised in managing information and communicating with different audiences
• You’ll need to be confident in approaching conversations with new people, that includes speaking directly with children and families about their needs, and approaching potential sources of support on their behalf
• You’ll have strong relationship management skills, the ability to make people you are talking to feel at ease and supported

Experience working with families with a child with a life threatening or limiting illness, or working with a family support organisation is desirable but not essential.

You’ll receive a full induction to the Young Lives vs Cancer BCH and QEHB social work team, learn about the service we provide and the impact of cancer on the children, young people and families we support.

4 hours a week during office hours (9am to 5pm, Tuesday to Thursday)

From your own home but you do need to be based in the Birmingham area to attend occasional team meetings and supervision.

Role 1: Trustee – Development and Strategic Growth

We are seeking a trustee with experience in strategic development, income generation, and fundraising - ideally within the charity sector.

Key Responsibilities:

• Provide strategic oversight of Wonderseekers' forward plans, major initiatives, and campaigns
• Guide the Board on building external relationships with funders, partners, and stakeholders
• Support the Development Team in evolving fundraising strategies (individual giving, grants, trusts, corporate partnerships)
• Shape strategies for income generation, sponsorship, and donor stewardship
• Contribute to public relations, communications, and marketing
• Champion Wonderseekers’ mission and connect new supporters with our vision
• Serve and Chair the Fundraising Committee

Role 2: Trustee - Commercial Strategy

We are also seeking a trustee with a strong commercial background, particularly in the visitor experience sector, with financial acumen and senior experience in either a commercial or charitable setting.

Key Responsibilities:

• Maintain strategic oversight of Wonderseekers' commercial performance, especially at our visitor centre in Winchester
• Advise the Board on commercial matters and support the COO in long-term growth planning
• Lead or support on commercial risk management
• Serve as a director and Chair of our trading subsidiary, Sparking Curiosity Limited

Background Information

This kindergarten is part of a Community Center that helps the population of the area with various activities such as a kindergarten, a playground for the younger kids, afterschool support workshops, a vegetable garden to be tended by the children when they are old enough, and the soup kitchen that cooks for the kindergarten and the people from the neighborhood. Thus, this organization is based on working with families and children from first to seventh grade, supporting them in their growing and development process, with a team of professionals and social workers. The Community Center was founded in 1994 as a soup kitchen, and the kindergarten was started by the mothers from the area a few years later.

Why is this project important for the community?

The main goal of this Center is to offer the children's families a place of education and integral support, where they can find social and psychological benefits. It ultimately represents a way to compensate for the schools' weaknesses and the lack of investment from the Government to improve them. Those who belong to the organization understand that the work with children is not efficient if it doesn't start from the beginning, with the youngest children, and this is the kindergarten's task. It is also a place where the unemployed women from the area can have training sessions that take place periodically with professionals.

Role of the Volunteer

From 8:00 am to 3:30 pm, the kindergarten welcomes and educates the children from the area. The volunteer can do a multitude of things such as assist the teachers with organizing activities, play with the children, help to feed them during lunch time, help in the cleaning process and much more! The Kindergarten is a place of exchange between teachers, social workers, parents and volunteers from the area, as well as from Voluntario Global. They all work together for the safe upbringing of the children and this gives the international volunteers a unique opportunity for learning about this perspective and exchanging valuable experiences.

What can you learn as a volunteer?

The help of the volunteer is invaluable for the teachers and for the population of the area because it represents both a practical support and cultural exchange. In this area where a variety of cultural communities live together, the volunteer learns about social diversity. Moreover, they can exchange with the local inhabitants about teaching methods and share their own experience and ideas to improve the organization of the kindergarten. These different viewpoints represent a wealth for this place and all initiatives are well received. This project is perfect to benefit from the company of children, who always have energy and whose smiles make us happy every day.

How does your work impact on the community?

The support from social organizations and volunteers is fundamental in this neighborhood, mainly because its precarious situation affects families that need to face a lack of infrastructures and serious problems of public sanitation. Indeed, many families live in houses where they have problems with light and where they don't have running water or a drainage system, in an area which has huge weaknesses in terms of sewer systems and road pavements. Also, it is located near a river which is highly contaminated by the chemicals released by nearby factories, and this generates respiratory and gastrointestinal diseases that mainly affect the children. Although faced with this situation, people don't receive help from the government to improve their standards of living that are now disadvantage and harmful to their health. There are some housing construction projects in the works but they are slow-coming and displacing the inhabitants that are the most affected by the contamination of the river. In addition to this precariousness, today, ambulances refuse to come into the area. Therefore, having volunteers coming to help them and wanting to learn from them and share time with them is crucially important for making them visible and appreciated in today’s society.

What we're looking for

That means, our community fundraising volunteers play a really important part in rallying people together to raise vital funds which help to protect children and prevent abuse.

What you'll do

You'll kindly volunteer your time at Norwich's fundraising events to help raise vital funds for the NSPCC. You could be selling raffle tickets, supporting a collection, making tea and coffee at a lunch or coffee morning or providing support to one of Norwich committee's annual  events. You will engage with the public, organisations and the local community – promoting a positive image of the NSPCC! We'd particularly like to hear from you if your workplace run a matched funding scheme alongside your attendance at a fundraising event.

You'll work closely with your regional Community Fundraising Manager and the Norwich committee who can provide you with a choice of events to attend. This role offers the opportunity to build your personal skills and raise your profile in your community. It is flexible, you only need to commit to a couple of hours a month but you can do more if you would like to.

We are looking for volunteers to help at our portfolio of exciting evening fashion show events  this year. Be a part of something truly special!

The NSPCC's mission is to end cruelty to children. In order to carry out its charitable work, the NSPCC relies on the fundraising support of people across the UK for 90% of its annual income. That's why the NSPCC events team put on industry leading events to raise funds and highlight the work that we do

We are looking for enthusiastic and organised people to join our community of event volunteers. We couldn't continue to hold industry leading events without our event volunteers who play an integral part in assisting on the night. The NSPCC events calendar brings together guests from a range of sectors for innovative, luxury and spectacular evenings of entertainment that help to raise vital funds for the NSPCC and Childline.

What you'll be doing:

To work together with the Community Fundraising Manager to co-ordinate new fashion show events in the local community together with like-minded people. 

We have many different roles that you can get stuck in to on the night of the event. The support needed is either event set up during the day or being on hand to greet and support guests over the duration of the evening. Typically, you will be volunteering for 5 hours, usually from 5.30pm to 10.30pm, with breaks and we will provide all food and refreshments.

Volunteers can expect to be:

• selling raffle tickets/ items during the reception
• acting as a table host and encouraging guests to bid in the silent auction and take part in fundraising games and activities.
• Taking part in our live auctions by acting as bid spotters for the auctioneer.

What you'll get:

A community of likeminded peers and the feeling that you have helped the NSPCC to achieve a successful event which will allow them to help children across the UK.

We'll support you with check in's and materials to help in your role. We will keep you updated with NSPCC information and other ways you can support.

We are seeking enthusiastic volunteers from all walks of life in Herefordshire to befriend and mentor a young person in care. This is a meaningful opportunity to make a significant impact in a young persons life.

 Children and young people in care deserve to have a trusted adult who can share their time, engage in activities, and provide a safe and fun friendship. Your visits can easily fit into your schedule, allowing you to balance your commitments while being a positive force in someone’s life.

• Help us to adopt best practice governance for a charity of our size and ambition.
• Act as a sounding board and critical friend for the Clinical Director.
• Represent the charity at occasional external meetings and events.
• Ensure timely decision making in between meetings where needed.

Skills and experience

We are looking for someone with experience of being a charity trustee who knows the charity sector.

UK Reads is the UK-based charity of the global non-profit World Literacy Foundation, which works to eradicate illiteracy and promote equitable access to education worldwide. About the Pen Pal Project

The Pen Pal Project empowers children aged 7–16 to become confident communicators by engaging them in creative, meaningful letter writing. UK pupils are matched with peers in Nigeria and other Sub-Saharan African countries to exchange letters over six structured sessions throughout the academic year.

The project supports pupils in:

• Developing core literacy skills (reading, writing, sentence structure, vocabulary)

• Strengthening confidence, empathy, and communication through storytelling

• Learning about different cultures, family structures, traditions, and daily life in another part of the world

• Practising both written and spoken English in an encouraging, low-pressure environment

Each school cohort follows a themed session plan exploring topics such as identity, youth culture, food, heritage, health, and hobbies.

Sessions are delivered by trained volunteers, with support from teachers and UK Reads staff.

Role Overview

As a Writing Session Coordinator, you’ll play a key role in supporting literacy, creativity, and inclusion in schools. You’ll work directly with students to help them explore personal expression, read incoming pen pal letters, and craft thoughtful responses.

This role is ideal for someone passionate about education, communication, cultural exchange, and making a difference at a grassroots level.

Responsibilities

• Facilitate six themed writing sessions at a primary or secondary school in London (sessions take place during school hours)

• Create an inclusive and welcoming atmosphere where all students feel safe to write and express themselves

• Support pupils with varied literacy levels, including those with special educational needs (SEND), English as an additional language (EAL), or lower confidence in reading/writing

• Guide pupils in reading and responding to letters received from international pen pals

• Encourage vocabulary development, sentence structure, and narrative skills using the provided facilitator resources

• Use creativity and cultural awareness to promote engagement and curiosity

• Complete light administrative tasks (~1 hour per session), including:

  • Reviewing students’ letters for safeguarding

  • Submitting short post-session reflections or feedback forms

• Attend a short online training session and stay in communication with the UK Reads team

Time Commitment

• Approx. 6-8 hours/month over the academic year

• Each session includes:

  • ~1 hour in-school delivery time

  • ~1 hour admin/reflection time

• Plus training, planning, and communication time as needed

• Sessions are typically spaced two per academic term (six total)

Volunteers are matched with one school and are expected to complete the full six-session cycle to ensure continuity and build rapport with pupils.

Who We're Looking For

We welcome volunteers from a wide range of backgrounds. You don’t need formal teaching experience — just commitment, empathy, and a passion for helping young people thrive.

Essential:

• Strong spoken and written English

• Comfortable working with children and young people in a school setting

• Reliable, organised, and able to follow session plans

• Open-minded, culturally sensitive, and adaptable to different learning styles

• Able to commit to a minimum of 6 sessions over the academic year (during school hours)

• Based in London or able to travel to schools across the city

• Willing to complete a DBS check and safeguarding training

Desirable (but not required):

• Experience in education, youth work, creative writing, literacy support, or mentoring

We are committed to child protection, safeguarding, and inclusive learning environments. All letters are reviewed by facilitators before being exchanged. Volunteers must complete a DBS check and basic safeguarding training before beginning their placement.

Volunteers who can offer their support for a variety of local events and initiatives. To help build a group of passionate people we can call on if we need an extra pair of hands.

Around 90% of our income comes from the public and we couldn't do what we do without them. Your role would help us raise money and awareness of our vital work in supporting communities and protecting children and young people

What does the role involve:

 Helping out when you can at local fundraising and awareness raising events in support of the NSPCC. You will be representing the charity in a professional manner. Some examples include:

• Helping in-person events run smoothly
• Childhood Day collections
• Acquiring prizes for events
• Assisting with ticket sales
• Advertising and promoting events through networks and social media

A key role will be to share news about our work in the local community and helping promote upcoming fundraising events and initiatives
