Change a child’s life story – Become a School reader volunteer

Schoolreaders is a national literacy charity called Schoolreaders. We find and match volunteers with local primary schools to support children in improving their reading and comprehension skills, as well as developing their confidence and social skills. 

Volunteers visit their matched school once a week for an hour or two during the school day where they work individually with children to help improve their reading ability, their comprehension and also their enjoyment of reading. Often our volunteers read with children who need extra support or who do not have anyone to read to outside of their classroom.

Volunteers need to be over 18, have good written and spoken English and enjoy spending time with children.  

 Our volunteers must be able to commit to a minimum of one hour each week for a full year during term time (although holidays can of course be taken) and will undergo an Enhanced DBS check, which is organised and paid for by the school.

RSBC are looking for volunteers to help deliver our range of activities, visits and services to children and young people with visual impairments.

What will I be doing?

Our amazing Activity Volunteers play a key role in supporting blind children and young people to take part in a variety of activities. These range from sports, creative (singing, performing, art), audiobook club and day trips. Our activities are designed for blind young people to meet new friends, gain confidence, learn new skills/sports, and become more independent. The skills you have developed in your career and personal life will be invaluable to our young people.

What’s important to us is that you are a team player, open to learning and willing to follow RSBC’s policies and can be an excellent ambassador for RSBC. Our Home-Visiting Service supports families who are experiencing difficulties or suffering stress and who have at least one child under the age of five years.

We stand alongside families so that parents do not feel alone in the critical task of raising children and support them to help children reach their full potential, have access to positive opportunities and enjoy childhood! We are recruiting volunteers to help us support families with young children facing challenges with parenting, helping to prevent family crisis or breakdown.

Providing practical and emotional support to local families with children under the age of 12 years, volunteers are matched with a family, visiting or keeping in touch by telephone weekly, offering tailored support which suit their needs. This is an in person role, where volunteers visit families in thier own homes and out in the local community. 

Our Family Support Volunteers: 

•  offer support, friendship and practical help to local parents and children
• visit families in their own homes, where the dignity and identity of each individual can be respected and protected
• reassure families that difficulties in bringing up children are not unusual
• emphasize the positive aspects of family life
• encourage parents’ strengths and emotional well-being for the ultimate benefit of their own children
• encourage families to widen their network of relationships and to use effectively the support and services available in the community
• attend an initial course of preparation, one day a week for 5 weeks
• visit families for a minimum of 2-3 hours per week according to the family’s needs
• receive regular support and supervision from the Family Services Co-ordinator
• be able to make a commitment to the scheme for at least 6 months. 

It is important that Family Support Volunteers: 

•  complete Safeguarding Level 1 training
•  be familiar with and committed to the Home-Start ethos and policies and practice
• share information with the Family Services Co-ordinator and contact the Family Services Co-ordinator immediately if there is concern about the physical or emotional well-being of any member of the family
•  take part in reviews with the family and Family Services Co-ordinator as requested
•  keep records of visits to families as requested by the Family Services Co-ordinator
• attend support, supervision and training sessions as arranged by the scheme
• have good communication skills with Home-Start staff and families.
•  have a friendly disposition and be open, honest and non-judgemental .
• have a DBS check and 2 references returned before supporting families in their own homes or group settings

We offer work experience and shadowing opportunities with the Family Support team as well as ongoing training on a variety of topics relating to families, children and young people. 

Airplay is part of the RAF Benevolent fund and run by One YMCA. We provide youth clubs for children aged eight to eighteen which includes Ben Clubs for children aged 5 to 7 too. We provide a range of social activities in state-of-the-art facilities with sessions run by our friendly youth workers.

The Charity runs an SEMH School, and we are seeking several volunteers to join our current team of Trustees and Governors.

We would be very interested to speak to you if you share our passion about our Charity and have a genuine interest in the welfare, care and development of children with social, emotional, or mental health consideration.

We are specifically interested to find Trustees and / or Governors who have experience in the following areas:

The Charity requires Trustees who will:

· Take a strategic role on the Board, holding the Senior Management Team (SMT) to the ethos and principles of the Charity in line with its founding documents.

· Provide challenge in a measured and open way.

Governors will be concerned with the school only.

Volunteers can opt to be both a Trustee and a Governor, or just one or the other.

These roles are voluntary; however, the Charity does require a level of commitment for the role. Our Trustees and Governors meet up to 4 evenings per year for full Board / Governor meetings. There are also termly monitoring visits for Governors. Full induction and ongoing training will be provided; a mentor from the existing board will be assigned so that you are supported fully.

Action for Refugees in Lewisham works to relieve poverty and isolation amongst refugees, asylum seekers and other vulnerable migrants in Lewisham. At the Rainbow Club supplementary school we aim to help children between the ages of 4 and 11 to improve their literacy, numeracy and social skills in a friendly and supportive environment.  We need your skills and enthusiasm to assist the teacher in the delivery of a literacy and numeracy class and work with other volunteers to develop a programme of recreational activities. The Rainbow Club runs on Saturday mornings during term-time.

Your duties will include:

• Arriving punctually for the 9am briefing by the Rainbow Club Headteacher;
• Working in a team with other volunteers and teachers to deliver literacy, numeracy, arts, sport activities – this includes ensuring children remain engaged throughout the lesson and carry out set tasks as instructed by the teacher;
• Working one-to-one with specific children if and when required;
• Filing classroom work and homework in children’s individual files and keeping all materials and resources tidy and properly stored;
• Liaising with parents as and when required for example distributing leaflets and news about future meetings and events and also assisting with parents' day;
• Following the teacher’s policies on discipline and classroom management;
• Supervising the children during break times;
• Supporting the children during class trips;
• Ensuring classrooms are clean and tidy at the end of each day – this may include being part of a regular team rota;
• Providing feedback and comments to the Rainbow Club Headteacher when required.

At School-Home Support, we believe every child deserves the opportunity to be in school and ready to learn – no matter the obstacles they face. Our mission is simple yet ambitious: to ensure that every child is in school, every day, by 2050. We are looking for a passionate and experienced Finance Trustee to help us make this vision a reality and have a lasting impact on children and families across the country. 

We’re seeking an individual who shares our passion for improving children’s lives. If you have experience as a trustee and are ready to take the next step in your governance journey, we would love to hear from you. 

Who We're Looking For: 

We are looking to recruit a Finance Trustee who is passionate about the work of School-Home Support and brings energy, commitment and leadership combined with a willingness to advocate for the work we do and the cause we serve.

As a Finance Trustee, You Will: 

• Contribute to setting goals, targets, and overall policy for the organisation

• Share your expertise and networks to support the development and growth of the charity. 

• Help ensure compliance with our legal obligations and the organisation’s core purpose. 

• Provide oversight of the budget to guarantee School-Home Support’s financial sustainability. 

• Ensure measures are in place for safeguarding for the children and families we support and the staff team

• Act as a champion and ambassador for School-Home Support, enhancing our reputation, representing us at key events, and supporting fundraising efforts. 

What We Offer:

• Support Throughout Your Journey: We will buddy you with a more experienced trustee or corporate volunteer to ensure you feel supported and confident throughout your time with us

Expectations: 

• Commitment: A commitment of three years to this voluntary role

• Meetings: Attend four half-day board meetings and one AGM each year, which are typically held in Stratford, London, or remotely.
