People Partner - Employee Relations

We are seeking a confident and supportive People Partner with strong employee relations experience to help create a positive, fair and engaged workplace.

Position: People Partner – ER
Salary: £40,000 to £45,000 per annum
Location: Remote with occasional travel
Hours: Full time, 37 hours per week

About the role

This is a key role within a values driven People team, providing expert advice and coaching on employee relations to managers and leaders across the organisation. You will help ensure every colleague is treated fairly and consistently, while guiding managers through complex situations with empathy and confidence.

You will support a positive workplace culture by building strong relationships, offering constructive solutions, and helping managers develop good people management skills. Your work will help maintain legal compliance, improve processes, reduce organisational risk and strengthen employee engagement.

Key responsibilities include:

• Acting as the first point of contact for complex employee relations queries
• Advising on disciplinary, grievance, capability and performance issues
• Leading on mediation and conflict resolution
• Ensuring cases are handled fairly, consistently and in line with employment law
• Reviewing and updating policies and procedures
• Coaching managers to handle ER issues confidently

About you

You will be an approachable professional who can build trust with managers and staff at all levels. You will combine a calm and supportive style with clear judgment and the confidence to challenge where needed.

Essential skills and experience:

• Strong experience managing complex employee relations cases
• CIPD Level 5 or equivalent experience
• Strong understanding of employment law and HR best practice
• Experience developing and implementing ER policies
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
• Confident advising and coaching managers
• Ability to analyse data and present findings clearly
• Ability to handle sensitive and confidential matters with discretion

The ideal candidate will demonstrate:

• A professional accountancy qualification (ACA, ACCA, CIMA or equivalent).
• Proven experience as a Head of Finance or similar senior finance leadership role, ideally within a charity or not-for-profit organisation of comparable size (£5m–15m income).
• Strong technical skills across both financial and management accounting.
• Excellent understanding of budgeting, forecasting, statutory reporting and financial control.
• Experience leading and developing a finance team and driving process and system improvements.
• A collaborative and solutions-focused approach, with the confidence to challenge and influence senior stakeholders.
• Experience supporting fundraising and operational teams, ideally in a complex, multi-stakeholder environment.

They are now seeking an experienced Senior Finance Business Partner to take full accountability for delivering strategic financial insights and support across the organisation. This pivotal leadership role will enable the Financial Controller to focus on broader strategic priorities, while ensuring robust financial management, insightful analysis, and effective governance throughout the organisation.

Key responsibilities include:

• Partnering with budget holders across the organisation to develop budgets, forecasts, and reports that inform strategic decision-making.
• Enhancing the quality, accuracy, and timeliness of financial data to create a more forward-looking, insight-driven finance function.
• Lead on the production of end-to-end management accounting.
• Leading ongoing improvements in financial systems, processes, and reporting to drive efficiencies and foster better collaboration.
• Providing financial leadership during key projects, including refining forecasting accuracy and streamlining year-end procedures.
• Acting as a trusted adviser to the senior leadership team, clearly communicating financial risks, opportunities, and insights.

The Ideal Candidate Will Demonstrate:

• Proven experience working directly with budget holders and engaging senior stakeholders.
• Strong expertise in budgeting, forecasting, and financial planning & analysis
• The ability to manage and develop a finance team, with a focus on process improvements.
• Experience in the social housing sector
• Fully qualified accountant (ACA, ACCA, CIMA, or equivalent).
• A collaborative, proactive approach with the resilience to work effectively under pressure.

The role offers a generous 33 days on annual leave, highly competitive pension and a flexible hybrid working model, requiring a minimum of three days per week at the head office located at 3 Resolution Plaza, London E1 6PS.

About the role 

You will ensure your team will deliver high quality legal services. You will manage and supervise the legal teams who are advocating for clients with housing issues, using the evidence from frontline casework to bring about systemic change through working with colleagues in Policy and Campaigns, national policy influence and strategic litigation. You will be providing professional support to the team through supervision, mentoring and ensuring they stay up to date with developments in housing, welfare and public law.

Shaping local plans and priorities to align with Shelter’s wider strategy, overseeing financial and contract performance, best practice, audits and quality reviews will also be crucial aspects of the role, along with developing talent and succession planning across our national legal team.

You will lead by example and model Shelter’s values throughout your work – inclusive, anti-racist, collaborative and brave and will work across the organisation to embed legal insight into our wider work.

About you

You will be an experienced housing or public law solicitor, or have equivalent expertise, with strong leadership ability or potential, with knowledge of what makes a good legal service. You know how to bring out the best in people and what keeps a team performing well, having supervised or supported colleagues and are confident and equitable in decision making. You are able to turn insight into action, spotting trends and using evidence to bring about change and know when to adapt or not. Crucially, you have the ability to lead with integrity, curiosity and keep others motivated through changes and challenges.
