Who are we looking for?

We are seeking an experienced treasurer who has a comprehensive understanding of charity finances, requirements and regulations and will actively support other board members to fulfil their collective responsibilities around finance.

You will play a pivotal role in ensuring the Gut UK’s ambitious growth plans are achievable, and sustainable for the long term. As a charity we need to do more, fund more, and support more people and we need a treasurer who shares our passion in achieving this. 

As treasurer, you will play a vital role in ensuring our financial health, sustainability, and transparency. You guide and advise the Board on financial strategy, budgeting, and risk management, Chair the Finance, Fundraising, Audit & Risk Committee, ensuring robust oversight of financial and operational matters, support the CEO and COO, offering expert insight and challenge on financial planning and reporting, and champion good governance, transparency, and accountability across the organisation. 

We are looking to recruit a Volunteer for the position of Treasurer who can oversee & support the Board, CEO & the Business & Central Services Manager on the financial management aspects of Leeway Domestic Violence and Abuse Services, from supporting with the financial forecasting, budgets & management account analysis, as well as all other financial related tasks and duties that the charity needs.

You must have previous experience in a financial role such as in Accounting and a good understanding of charities. You must be committed and dedicated to the role and the charity, ensuring any deadlines are met.

Experience:

• Charity Accounting: 2 years (Preferred)
• Accounting: 2 years (Desirable)

Volunteer Treasurer Role Description

The responsibilities of the Treasurer at board level are to:

• Liaise with finance staff and with the organisation’s independent examiner or auditor, in order to ensure that the organisation keeps proper accounts, in compliance with Companies House and Charity Commission regulations.

• Chair the finance sub-committee meetings, who are responsible for: -

• Reviewing the organisation’s financial performance.

• Reviewing policies for finance and investment.

• Ensuring that the organisation has robust and effective financial controls in place.

• Report on financial matters to the management committee.

The treasurer will share these responsibilities with the finance sub-committee, and staff will carry out day to day finance functions.

We are looking for a highly experienced finance leader to join the UK’s leading campaign for assisted dying law reform, as their Treasurer. This organisation campaigns for a change in the law so that terminally ill, mentally competent adults can have the choice of a safe, legal assisted death. This opportunity to join their board comes at a pivotal time for them, as the assisted dying Bill continues its journey to becoming law. 

Position: Treasurer 

Location: National 

Time commitment: 1-2 days per month

They are a not-for-profit limited company with a sister charity. Both organisations have a shared aim of improving dying in the UK by putting people in charge of decisions about the end of their life, but work towards their shared aim in different ways. They are legally separate organisations with separate boards and finances, however they share a CEO and some resources, such as an office and some staff. 

The ideal Treasurer candidate will bring experience within the healthcare or charity sector, with a passion for patient choice. We are looking for someone with accountancy qualifications (or demonstrable experience). Prior Board experience is not essential.

Board members are required to attend five meetings per year, most of which are virtual or hybrid, with an away day held in person.  In addition, the Treasurer chairs the Finance and Audit Sub Committee (FASC), which meets five times per year virtually. 

With the organisation likely to see huge cultural and legal shifts around end-of-life care and choice in the coming years, all Board members need to be innovative in their approach to help build sustainable funding stream. The Treasurer will in addition have the following responsibilities:

• Oversee the finance functions of the organisation and ensure they follow accepted accounting practice 

• Oversee the production of management accounts including annual budgets and quarterly forecasts 

• Assist the Chair and CEO in ensuring that the board fulfils its duties and responsibilities for proper financial governance by providing advice to the board and senior management team on the financial implications of strategic decisions 

• Chair the Finance and Audit Sub Committee  

• Liaise, alongside the staff finance team, with external auditors annually to facilitate the creation of annual accounts

BRASS is more than a charity - it is a lifeline for refugees and asylum seekers in Bedfordshire. We're seeking a new Treasurer Trustee to join our friendly and committed board.

About Bedfordshire Refugee & Asylum Seeker Support

Our objective is to support Refugees and asylum seekers in Bedfordshire. We provide Drop in advice, English lessons and social activities.

What will you be doing?

Following the retirement of our long-serving Treasurer, BRASS is now seeking a new Treasurer Trustee to join our friendly and committed board. The Treasurer is responsible for overseeing the financial health of BRASS and supporting the board in fulfilling its governance duties.

The accounts are managed by our small but capable internal finance team, including a Finance Officer (one day per week), a Finance Manager (two days per week), who also prepares the annual accounts. An independent volunteer accountant also reviews and signs off the accounts.

The Treasurer role is not time-intensive and the focus is on oversight and guidance, rather than hands-on financial management.

Time commitment

All meetings are held online, making it possible to fulfil the role remotely and providing flexibility for trustees wherever they are based.

Typical commitments include: Four quarterly trustee meetings (1-1.5 hours each, online), one annual finance sub-committee meeting with the finance team, occasional ad hoc input if needed between meetings.

We’re looking for a motivated finance professional to join our Trustee Board as Treasurer, provide us with financial strategic direction and help us maintain our long-term sustainability

Working closely with our Chair and Chief Officer, your key responsibilities will include:

• Keeping the Board informed about its financial duties and responsibilities

• Guiding and advising the Board in the approval of budgets, accounts and financial statements

• Chairing the Board’s Finance Sub-Committee

• Reviewing the quarterly and year end accounts produced by our Administrator

• Presenting the year end accounts at the Annual General Meeting

• Ensuring that proper financial procedures and controls are in place to safeguard the charity’s resources

You don’t need to have been a trustee before, but you’ll need to:

• have recognised professional financial qualifications or experience

• ideally, have some knowledge or experience of charity finances

• be familiar with Quickbooks accounting systems and spreadsheets

• have the skills to analyse proposals and examine their financial consequences

• be able to explain complex financial information in an accessible way

• be able to exercise good independent judgment and if necessary to make difficult recommendations

• work effectively as part of a team

• have the time and flexibility to respond to the demands of the charity

• be willing to learn about and follow the Citizens Advice aims, principles and policies, including confidentiality, equality and data protection

• represent Citizens Advice professionally at all times

Please note that while a large part of the role can be performed remotely, in-person attendance is expected for the board and trustee meetings.

Specific Responsibilities of the Treasurer

• Ensure the charity’s financial affairs are legal, constitutional, and in line with accepted accounting practice and Charity Commission guidelines

• Oversee accurate record-keeping and effective financial procedures and controls

• Lead the Finance Sub-Group (with the CEO and Finance Manager) to monitor financial health and report key updates at Board meetings (e.g. income/expenditure, balance sheet, cash flow, reserves)

• Oversee the timely preparation of the annual budget and recommend its adoption to the Board

• Guide trustees in assessing the financial viability of plans, proposals, and feasibility studies

• Ensure financial resources meet both present and future needs

• Maintain a robust overview of financial risks facing the charity

The purpose of the role is to act as the principal financial officer for the Area, ensuring that all Area income and expenditure is properly managed and accounted for and is compliant with Ramblers’ policies and procedures.

The Treasurer is a key member of the Area leadership teams and contributes to decision-making across a wide range of issues relating to the Sussex Area of the Ramblers, the UK's largest and most vibrant walking community.
