Overview of the role
We are an exciting team that aim to design and develop fantastic programme for all members of our organisation. The London Basketball Association is pleased to announce that an opportunity has arisen for a Board of Trustees Chairperson to join our intensely committed organisation.
The Board of Trustees Chairperson is a pivotal role within the organisation, tasked with holding the Board and Executive Team to account, to ensure the Charity hits its mission and longer term strategic visions. You don’t have to have epilepsy yourself and your check-in calls don’t even have to be about epilepsy, sometimes people want to forget about that for a while and instead have a friendly conversation about what’s on telly, their favourite sport or their hobby.
You might be able to encourage them to get out and make more connections in their community but even if all you do is make someone laugh you have brightened their day and made a difference.
What's involved?
There is a DBS check to ensure we keep everyone safe and some basic training to enable you to get started. You’ll then be ready to start making calls. Calls typically last 30 minutes so depending how much time you have to give you can make a difference to two or three people a week, maybe even more!
Calls can easily be made over the phone or if you prefer over video call it's up to you which you prefer.
The role is flexible so that you can choose a time to volunteer that suits you. We only ask that you stick to that same time and day each week as it makes it easier for the service user to remember when to expect a call. We also ideally want you to be able to volunteer for at least a year so that service users have a consistent experience.
You’ll be fully supported by our befriending team and you’ll get to join our volunteer community with regular volunteer meet-ups. Our volunteer portal makes it easy to connect to other volunteers in your area or with shared interests and to be part of our volunteering community.

Leadership Development Programme
In addition to your work in school, you’ll take part in City Year UK’s Leadership Development Programme. This includes tailored professional development workshops and the opportunity to gain an accredited qualification. You’ll also receive training on leadership, communication, and employability skills that will set you up for success in your future career. Our volunteers often go on to careers in education, social work, law enforcement, and many other fields.
This is a full-time position, Monday to Friday, during term time. Living expenses and travel costs will be reimbursed.

Requirements
This role is full-time, Monday to Friday, during school term time. A typical school day runs from 8:00am to around 4:00pm, with an hour for lunch (this may vary depending on the school’s schedule). You’ll need to pass a Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check and provide satisfactory references.

We are looking for a new Honorary Treasurer to join our diverse Board of Trustees. This is a key role within the organisation, offering a wonderful opportunity to make a difference to the lives of separated children arriving in the UK.
In addition to the general responsibilities of a Trustee, the Honorary Treasurer maintains an overview of The Separated Child Foundation’s financial affairs, monitors the financial administration of the charity and provides financial management advice and information to the Board of Trustees and to the Chief Executive.
Main responsibilities
• Making sure the charity keeps proper accounts
• Reviewing the charity’s financial performance
• Drawing up or reviewing policies for finance and investment
• Ensuring that the charity has robust and effective financial controls in place
• Liaising with external bookkeeping providers and with the charity’s Independent Examiner
• Reporting on financial matters where relevant
• Acting as a counter signatory on bank payments
• Liaising with external payroll provider regarding payroll preparation for new employees
• Ensuring our banking services are fit for purpose
Financial overview
• Act as the main interface between the Board of Trustees and the Chief Executive on financial matters
• Advise the Board as necessary on its financial duties and responsibilities
• Maintain an overview of the organisation’s financial status and viability and provide overall financial management advice to the Board and to the Chief Executive
• Advise and monitor financial risks to which the organisation is exposed
• Oversight of and input into financial controls
• Involvement in the preparation of the Trustees’ Annual Report and Accounts (TARA) and Annual Review
Strategic input and budget monitoring
• Work with the Chief Executive to draft 1-3 year budgets to deliver the strategic plan
• Advise on the financial implications of the strategic plan
• Support the Chief Executive’s review of monthly management accounts as needed
Additionally, the Honorary Treasurer is a key member of the Management Committee, which – amongst other duties – reviews and makes recommendations to the Board on staff pay in line with the charity’s policy

Marie Curie Companion is a professional service provided by trained volunteers who offer one-to-one companionship and support to people with a terminal illness and their families. The service would not be able to reach those most in need if it was not for the commitment and hard work of the volunteers delivering the service.
Companion Volunteers provide companionship and emotional support, practical support, short breaks for carers and help with signposting for information and support. Your role will include some of, but is not restricted to, the following tasks:

Carry out weekly visits with the person(s) you’re supporting, as agreed with the Volunteer Co-ordinator. This could be in a variety of settings, eg family home, a care home or in the community.

Provide one-to-one companionship and support.
For example: offering a listening ear and spending time engaging in every-day conversation, activities or hobbies with the person you are supporting. Driving clients to pre-arranged health or social care (e.g. to medical appointments) or taking short trips out. Helping with small, daily tasks, e.g. making tea or accessing the internet. Allowing carers to have a short break. You may be supporting your client’s family or carers before or during bereavement. This may involve offering emotional support, signposting to relevant local support services or finding out information as requested (This is only an outline as support will vary according to individual needs. Companion volunteers do not provide nursing or personal care, or offer counselling or advice)

Keep your manager informed of any changes to the situation, or any significant happenings in connection to the person you’re supporting and/or their family, either in person or by phone

Submit regular visit reports to your manager and update relevant computer systems as required

Be reliable and committed to regularly spending time with someone and offering support

Attend individual sessions with your Volunteer Co-ordinator, training and group events as required

Represent the Marie Curie Companion service positively to those using the service
