We are looking for a volunteer that can support us in creating these events that support education, community and wellbeing.

The Community Volunteer role is an exciting new role that St John Ambulance has rolled out, that would give you the chance to be the heart of Plymouth's Community spirit. From supporting large community events on the Hoe to small fundraisers or community engagements our Community Volunteers are at the heart of bringing people together to help raise vital funds to keep our work going. This is your chance to meet new people, make new friends, build confidence and learn new skills, and play a key role in making Plymouth Networks campaigns successful. Whether its supporting a local event, or inspiring others to get involved, you'll be making a real difference to the city of Plymouth. A few hours of your time can have such a huge impact. We’re part of the Royal Air Force Air Cadets, a national youth organisation empowering 12- to 20-year-olds through flying, adventure training, sports, and leadership development. 

West Mercian Wing supports over 900 cadets across 27 Squadrons in Herefordshire, Worcestershire, Shropshire, the Black Country, and overseas in Cyprus. 

Each squadron has a committee, a team of trustees who support the squadron by overseeing governance, fundraising, and building community partnerships. Trustees are vital in ensuring squadrons can continue providing incredible opportunities for cadets.

Volunteer with us at The National Running Show on Saturday 31st January 2026 & Sunday 1st February 2026 

At Acorns we provide care and support for life limited or life threatened children and their families. We are a charity, and our fundraising is vital to enable us to continue providing care and support to the children: it costs around £13 million a year to run our care services.

What's involved?

The purpose of the event is to raise awareness for  Acorns and gather contact information or sign-ups from individuals interested in our fundraising events; volunteers will assist at the stand as representatives of Acorns, help manage on-the-day activities such as games and competitions, collect donations, and may also take part as Alex the Acorn mascot or chaperone. While food and parking are not provided, water will be available, and volunteers will have free access to the Running Show before or after their allocated shift (RRP £15/day).

How much time will it take? 

8:30am – 5pm

We would like to split each day into two shifts, with 2 volunteers on each shift.

Shift 1: 8.30am – 12:30pm

Shift 2: 12.30pm – 5pm

 Alex & Chaperone’s hours will be 9am – 4pm

Why we want you

As a community engagement volunteer you and your fellow branch members will create a range of activities to help spread the word about SSAFA within your community to ensure that that our Armed Forces community know that SSAFA are here to help and that we need the public’s support to continue offering our services.

This role is diverse and allows for you to focus on the areas that you have skills or interests in. The role has flexibility and can work around your other commitments.

Below are some examples of possible activities you can take on or be a part of as a SSAFA Community Engagement Volunteer.

What you will be doing

• Activity Organisers - Love planning? Help coordinate amazing events like charity dinners, carol concerts, and local fairs.
• Event Champions - Be the friendly face of SSAFA! Help at events, chat with visitors, sell merchandise, and spread the word about our work.

• Promoting SSAFA Services - Help provide a warm, welcoming presence at Veterans Breakfast clubs, cafes or hubs - offering information about SSAFA services and signposting as appropriate.
• SSAFA Storytellers -Deliver engaging talks to organisations and groups, sharing SSAFA’s incredible history and mission.
• Community Connectors - Collaborating with the Community Engagement Manager to establish a local network, promote SSAFA's services, and respond to community opportunities such as gardening projects.
• Fundraising Heroes - Whether it’s rallying local businesses, organising events, or getting creative with unique fundraising ideas, you’ll play a crucial role in keeping SSAFA’s support going strong.
• Administrators - Are you detail-oriented and love keeping things organised? Assist with branch and event administration, manage schedules and branch calendars, and ensure everything runs smoothly currently being undertaken.

The skills you need

• Be friendly and approachable.
• Confident to engage with the public, potential clients, volunteers and SSAFA colleagues face-to-face.
• Reliable attitude, staying connected with your Branch and/or Community Engagement Manager about your availability.
• Access to public transport or a car to get to events if necessary.
• Basic IT skills would be an advantage.
