Job description

Dragon School have an exciting opportunity for a Gardener to join their team.

Location: Oxford

Salary: Dependent on experience

Job Type: Part Time

Gardener - The Role:

Coinciding with the arrival of a new Head, this is an exciting time to be joining Dragon School. The successful candidate will be a key member of the Estates department.

To be part of a team providing a full range of Grounds services to the Dragon School.  To maintain the grounds and gardens at both the Prep and Pre-Prep site including certain residential properties.

Gardener - Key Responsibilities:

- Lawn maintenance

- Maintaining the flower and rose beds, and all planters

- Maintaining hedges

- Weeding, Forking, mulching, watering, seed sowing, flower bed preparing and

planting, leaf blowing, path clearing, salt spreading and snow clearing

- Occasionally driving a school minibus in support of pupil transport requirements

- Carrying out other general, ad hoc grounds/estate duties, as directed by the Estates Bursar

and within capabilities; including working overtime to meet specific demands, at agreed

overtime rates

- Ensuring that all departmental (workshop and storage) areas are kept clean and tidy

at all times, and that appropriate tools/equipment are safely stored and serviceable,

and that the Estates Bursar is given adequate notice of the need to replenish stores

and equipment, including machinery repairs

- Assisting and overseeing contractors whilst on site, making sure they carry out their

works to the correct Health and Safety standards

- Ensuring, with the assistance of the Estates Bursar, that all machinery and tools are

serviced in accordance with published standards, and that records are maintained

- As required by the Estates Bursar, assisting in the performance of other “whole

team” duties occasionally undertaken by all members of the Estates team

- Complying with both statutory and School Health & Safety Policies and procedures,

maintaining records and control of substances covered by COSHH plus other

regulations. In particular, it is the post holder’s responsibility to ensure compliance

with all statutory and local instructions regarding use of tools and machinery,

wearing of protective clothing including footwear and ear defenders, working at

height, lifting and lone working

Gardener - You:

Essential

- Full driving license

- Minimum RSH level 2 or equivalent

- Safe Use of Pesticides

- Knapsack Sprayer

- PA1/PA6

- Formal Manual Handling

- Formal training in chainsaw use

- General Health and

- Safety awareness

- Knowledge gardening machinery

- Minimum of 3 years practical experience in a similar role

- Able to work unsupervised

 - Excellent team worker

- Willingness to undertake a wide variety of tasks

- Understand and demonstrate willingness to promote positively equal opportunities outlined in School policies

- Ability to lift heavy goods

- Ability to work weekends as and when required

Desirable

- Driving license with minimum of D1

- Previous experience of working in a Prep School

Gardener - Benefits:

Pension

Support staff will automatically be enrolled into the School’s generous workplace

pension scheme.

Lunch

During term time School lunches are provided to staff.

Cycle to Work Scheme

Dragon School utilises the Cycle to Work Scheme which gives staff the option to

purchase a bike through the School and make payments back through their salary.

Death in Service

Eligible permanent employees are automatically enrolled into the School’s death in

service scheme. The benefit of this scheme is 3 x annual salary.

and expects all staff and volunteers to share this commitment.
