Job description
We are looking for two volunteer interpreters—one fluent in Dari and one fluent in Pashto — to join our team at the Gulab Sorkh Foundation (GSF). You will play a key role in supporting Afghan refugees who have resettled in the UK, assisting them in accessing essential services and communicating effectively in their daily lives. This is an influential volunteer opportunity where you will make a real difference by helping Afghan refugees integrate into British society, providing crucial interpretation during interactions with service providers such as healthcare professionals, housing officers, and legal advisors.
As a Volunteer Interpreter, you will:
- Provide interpretation services (Dari or Pashto) to Afghan refugees, ensuring clear
- communication between them and various UK service providers.
- Assist refugees in understanding key information related to housing, healthcare,
- education, and other public services.
- Facilitate communication during meetings, appointments, and community events to
- support their integration journey.
- Offer support and cultural understanding to ensure refugees feel comfortable and
- respected throughout their resettlement process.
Key responsibilities:
- Interpret accurately and sensitively between Dari/Pashto and English during one-on-one
- and group interactions.
- Help beneficiaries understand and complete necessary paperwork or official forms in
- both languages.
- Collaborate with case managers and external partners to ensure the refugees’ needs are
- effectively communicated.
- Be aware of and sensitive to the needs of individuals who may have experienced trauma
- and displacement.
- Follow data protection laws and policies
Essential skills:
- Fluency (written and verbal) in Dari and/or Pashto and in English.
- A high level of cultural sensitivity and empathy towards Afghan refugees.
- Strong communication skills, with the ability to translate complex information clearly
- and accurately.
- Ability to remain neutral and impartial in all interactions.
- Commitment to safeguarding vulnerable individuals and confidentiality.
Desirable skills:
- Level 3 in Interpretation.
- Previous experience working with refugees or vulnerable communities.
- Knowledge of UK systems such as healthcare, housing, and immigration.
- Understanding of the Afghan Relocations and Assistance Policy (ARAP) scheme.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.

This role will require an in-person interview, which will take place provisionally in Birmingham City Centre. Interview dates/times will be emailed to you should your application be successful. Volunteers would be expected to commit 100 hours of volunteering a year in a clinical capacity. They will also be expected to keep in regular contact with their line manager and keep up to date with their training.
Once your screening for role has been completed, you will be invited to attend your local St John Ambulance Network for a Welcome and Induction.
Training for this role consists of online learning modules and a 6 day in-person course, normally spread across three weekends. Your local Network will support you through the training process.

DBS Check and Training to be completed / provided:
- Basic DBS check
- Basic Awareness and Foundation level safeguarding training.
- ACT Counter Terrorism training.
- In-house additional training as required.
Ensuring the safety of everyone who comes into the cathedral is Birmingham Cathedral Chapter’s highest priority. All volunteers must also complete our Safeguarding training before they can start working with us.
What this volunteering opportunity will provide you with:
- Knowledge of the international significance of the windows, the artists Edward Burne-Jones and William Morris and their links to Birmingham.
- Experience working with people from a diverse range of backgrounds.
- Insight into the workings of the cathedral, and experience working in a sacred building and place of faith.
- The opportunity to practice speaking in various foreign languages dependent on the nationality of visitors you encounter.
- Opportunities to volunteer in further roles in the cathedral team.
- Experience working alongside a team of skilled and knowledgeable individuals both clergy and non-clergy
- Safeguarding and ACT training (this is a requirement)

Role Overview:
GHRI is seeking a Remote Volunteer Full-Stack App Developer to support the development of our telemedicine and digital health applications. This is a fully remote role suitable for individuals looking to build real-world experience while contributing to meaningful social impact.
Responsibilities:
Develop and maintain mobile and web applications from frontend to backend.
Build clean, responsive, and user-friendly UI components.
Implement and manage backend logic, APIs, and databases.
Integrate telemedicine features, including chat and patient support modules.
Debug, test, and optimize applications for performance and scalability.
Collaborate remotely with designers, writers, and tech leads.
Ensure security, data protection, and proper documentation.
Requirements:
