We are a well‑established and successful local charity supporting vulnerable people, and we’ve just celebrated our 30th anniversary. As we continue to grow, we’re looking for a Volunteer Administrator to support our work at this exciting moment in our development.
You will be joining an incredibly supportive team of staff, volunteers and trustees, many of whom have been here for more than 10 years, working towards our shared mission to enhance the quality of life for our beneficiaries.
Your role
Brigstowe is seeking a Volunteer Administrator to support our reception and office administration for one full day or two half-days per week, preferably on Tuesdays and/or Thursdays.
The role will include:
You will be supervised and supported by Brigstowe’s full-time Executive Assistant. Full induction will be provided, along with ongoing training opportunities. In return, we require a minimum commitment of six months.
About us
For 30 years, Brigstowe has been a lifeline for people living with HIV, especially those facing barriers: refugees, asylum seekers, LGBTQ+ communities, as well as people with no safe place to disclose. We’ve mentored hundreds, advised thousands, and supported hundreds more who have struggled with life, and we’ve trained hundreds of public-facing professionals.
We support anyone living with or affected by HIV in Bristol and the surrounding areas through a comprehensive and holistic range of services, including advice and support, peer support groups and peer mentoring. We also provide sexual health promotion and outreach services.
We pride ourselves on treating our clients with respect and dignity, with the highest regard for confidentiality. We work hard to ensure that our award-winning services are accessible, person-centred, non-judgmental, professional and of a high quality.
About you
You are an enthusiastic team player who enjoys keeping things running smoothly behind the scenes so that the support staff can focus on their clients. You enjoy supporting people from all backgrounds, and you will be using your skills to directly support vulnerable people in the community.
The role would suit someone with some administrative experience who is comfortable with IT and Microsoft Office programmes (mainly Excel and Word). You will be working in the office alongside our committed and supportive staff team, gaining experience in a rewarding charity setting.
Hours: One full day or two half-days per week (preferably working on Tuesdays and/or Thursdays)
Commitment: We ask for a minimum commitment of six months

Do you want to help people experiencing the housing emergency?
Information about the role
You’ll be an essential part of the team, welcoming clients and visitors to the hub. You’ll be providing information and key admin support that enables people to get the help they need with their housing. As well as gathering feedback from clients on their experience of our service.
Location: London Hub, 88 Old Street, London
Suggested contribution: One day per week (can be flexible around your commitments)
Availability: Volunteering will take place at a time that suits you, within Monday-Friday, 9am – 5pm

Main activities may include:
Covering reception duties and being the first point of contact for the hub.
Booking in clients for appointments with our advisors.
Responding to general enquiries both in person and over the phone.
Triaging clients both in person and over the phone
Signposting people to other appropriate services.
General administrative tasks (such as photocopying, scanning, data entry, filing)
Phoning clients around 8-10 weeks after they accessed our services.
Asking clients set questions to gather information on their experiences with Shelter and the difference it has made to them.
Recording the phone calls and the responses given onto our client database (CRM).
This role fights the housing emergency by enabling people who are struggling with housing or homelessness to get the advice and support they need.

Your skills and experience
There are no specific skills or experience you need to have for this role though we do welcome the following skills
Understanding of the housing system
Speak more than one language we particularly welcome speakers of Arabic, Bengali, French, Urdu. But any additional language can be useful please specify on your application form if you speak more than one language and which language you speak.
Supporting you
You will be provided with an induction into your role, access to relevant learning and a copy of our volunteer handbook.
The role, including learning and communications, are flexible, so can be tailored so they best suit your needs and preferences.
You will be able to claim reasonable volunteering expenses in line with Shelter’s volunteer expenses policy. Where financial circumstances would be a barrier to volunteering, we may be able to offer these funds in advance.
You will be able to access our volunteer support package, including our colleague assistance programme and Shelter’s network of mental health first aiders.

Support clients with forms, budgeting, and calls to service providers
Research solutions for clients’ problems and explain options clearly.
Our volunteer advisers talk to clients over the phone, face to face and
online to explore what issues they’ve come for help with and find
information about possible options. Advisers then help clients to
understand the information, and support them to take action.
