The Assistant Finance and Operations Manager is a new role for The Christie Charity (Charity) and a fantastic opportunity for an individual looking to work for a fast moving, growing organisation. We are looking for an enthusiastic individual to take ownership in the finance team for day-to-day transactional processing for The Christie Charity group. This position provides an excellent opportunity to develop an understanding of charity and commercial finance. You will play a key role in supporting robust financial controls across the Charity group.

This is a hands-on role with responsibility for coordinating and overseeing day-to-day transactional activity undertaken by the Finance Officers, including purchase-to-pay, supplier payments, accounts receivable, banking, income reconciliation, corporate credit cards and other routine financial processes. The postholder will ensure work is completed accurately and within required timescales, review key reconciliations and outstanding items, and provide support and guidance to the Finance Officers where issues arise. They will remain actively involved in transactional processing where required, particularly in relation to more complex matters, periods of high workload and the transition of activities into the Charity.

The postholder will act as the first point of escalation for transactional matters which cannot be readily resolved by the Finance Officers and as a key point of contact for routine finance queries from external third parties. They will work closely with colleagues across the Charity to ensure financial processes operate effectively while maintaining appropriate controls and segregation of duties.

The Assistant Finance and Operations Manager will be an important day-to-day user of the Charity's finance and purchase-to-pay systems and will take a lead operational role in ensuring these systems are used consistently and effectively. The postholder will support Finance Officers and wider Charity colleagues with system and process queries, monitor compliance with agreed financial procedures and identify recurring issues or opportunities to improve processes. Working with the Charity Financial Controller and Funds and Finance Business Partner, they will contribute to the continued development of efficient, proportionate and well-controlled financial processes across the Charity group.

Additional information

Upon joining The Christie Charity, day-to-day financial transaction processing will continue to be delivered by The Christie NHS Foundation Trust during the initial months of the role, therefore, the postholder will be expected to work closely and collaboratively with their finance team to ensure seamless operations and continuity across the Charity group.

These functions are anticipated to transfer to the Charity group with the postholder taking ownership of these responsibilities within the first 3 months in role. The postholder will be expected to work autonomously to ensure the smooth transition of activities to the Charity.

This post would suit an individual who enjoys working in a dynamic, evolving environment, where responsibilities may shift in response to organisational priorities. The postholder must be comfortable navigating ambiguity, demonstrating flexibility, initiative, and a proactive approach to problem-solving.

The postholder will also provide support to the team on an ad-hoc basis as required.

About the role

This Debt Advice Case Manager role combines both technical and pastoral elements. It will involve building a client case, untangling sometimes complex situations, liaising with creditors, providing guidance for volunteers, and discerning and communicating the appropriate choices and strategies for the client. You will also need to lead client appointments and support clients through what at times can be emotionally difficult situations. Ideally, we are looking for someone with prior debt advice experience, and who has experience of working with vulnerable clients and supporting volunteers. However, we will also consider employing someone as a trainee Debt Advice Case Manager if they are able to demonstrate that they possess the skills, maturity, and determination to become proficient in this role.

• 3-5 days per week

• Being available onsite is an important aspect of this role two-thirds of your time spent in one of our Wandsworth locations or in our Head Office in Kensington. The exact split between remote/onsite working will be by agreement with the line manager and to meet the needs of the service which could change over time. About the Role

Working as part of the Transitions Project, you will provide specialist, person-centred benefits advice to people in their own homes and community settings across West Devon and Torridge.

Many of the people we support experience barriers that make it difficult for them to access mainstream advice services, including poor physical or mental health, disability, rural isolation, digital exclusion, low confidence and complex personal circumstances. You will take advice directly to clients, providing the time, flexibility and practical support they need to understand and access their benefit entitlements.

You will complete comprehensive benefit checks, support clients to make and manage claims, identify opportunities to maximise household income and help resolve benefit-related problems. This may include supporting clients with challenging decisions, mandatory reconsiderations and appeals, as well as liaising and advocating with the DWP, local authorities and other agencies.

The role involves regular lone working and travel to clients' homes, so you will need to be confident working independently while remaining closely connected to the wider Transitions team.

Financial Leadership

• To lead on the Risk Management process, advising the CEO and managers on risk matters, and reviewing the risk register on a regular basis, reporting to the Board of Trustees.

• To check, amend and monitor the Financial Procedures Manual; reporting material breaches to the CEO and Board of Trustees, as required/in-line with governance.

• Provides proactive strategic financial advice and guidance to the Trustees and wider leadership team, monitoring and reporting on the financial performance against agreed targets, identified risks and key performance indicators.

Responsibility for the training and development plan for the Finance and Business Support ensuring it is in effective operation including maintaining records of training needs identified and training attended.

Person Specification 

• ACA/ACCA/CIMA Qualified, CPE up to date.

• Strong financial management experience at a similar level within the charity/not for profit sector

• Sound experience of producing month-end management accounts and audited year-end financial accounts 

• Experience of managing and using financial systems

About the Role

To lead the development and continuous improvement of the organisation’s data, insight and reporting systems, ensuring that information is used effectively to improve services, demonstrate impact and support strategic decision-making. 

As our Data, Insight and Development Lead, you will work alongside operational colleagues, management and development teams, the postholder will combine data analysis with business analysis and service improvement. They will work with colleagues, partners and other stakeholders to understand

needs, map processes, identify problems and opportunities, and define practical requirements before new systems, tools or ways of working are developed. 

The role will turn information from case management, telephony, digital and other systems into clear, accessible reports, dashboards and insights. These will help staff, managers, trustees, funders, commissioners, Citizens Advice and external partners understand service performance, client outcomes, emerging needs, risks, gaps and opportunities. 

The postholder will act as a bridge between operational teams and developers, ensuring that technology and data solutions address genuine user and organisational needs. They will support improvement projects from discovery through to delivery, including consultation, requirements gathering, testing, documentation, implementation and evaluation, helping new ways of working become embedded and effective. 

Other organisations may call this role Business Analyst, Business Improvement Officer, Insight & Improvement Analyst, Service Design Analyst, or Systems Analyst. 

The role will also strengthen the organisation’s Research and Campaigns work by identifying emerging issues affecting clients and producing robust evidence to influence local and national policy.

Design and deliver training

•To be lead the Training Team Working Group and chair meetings.

•Plan, develop and record online webinars and presentations for families and babies vulnerable to sudden infant death and on bereavement support in line with the Training Strategy

•Use national and local data to create and deliver training packages which is responsive to need, SUDI and safeguarding reports and investigations and CDOP themes.

•Manage and facilitate the Young Parent Panel and New Families Panel in collaboration with other specialist organisations and charities; keeping in contact, recruiting new members, arranging meetings, focus groups and user testing and feedback on resources and activities.

•To be a representative for media work promoting safer sleep advice, including radio, tv, pre-recorded and live media.
