The Lyric’s Nomination Committee is seeking a new Chair for Lyric Hammersmith Enterprises Ltd, who will also serve as a Trustee of Lyric. The subsidiary is governed by a non-executive Board of Directors, chaired by this role.  Lyric Hammersmith Enterprises is responsible the Lyric’s non-charitable trading operations including catering, hires and events. Our commercial income is critical to helping the Lyric achieve its artistic and charitable objectives.

We are looking for a Chair with influence and authority, strategic thinking and sound judgement with particular expertise in commercial operations and income generation. You will need to share a passion for our artistic work and our commitment to being an equal, diverse, inclusive and environmentally sustainable organisation.

This role will serve as a Trustee to the charity, joining the existing Board for an initial three-year term. Trustees support the Chair, Lorraine Heggessey, and offer their expertise and guidance to the Executive Team.

We are particularly interested in those who have a strong connection with West London.

The Sheila McKechnie Foundation (SMK) was set up in June 2005 in memory of legendary campaigner, Sheila McKechnie.Campaigning is vital to a healthy society. We help campaigners to thrive. In a free and hopeful society, people need to know they have the power to make a difference: that they are able to envisage change and can push for that change to happen. For nearly two decades, we have helped all sorts of individuals, causes and charities to find their power as changemakers – as campaigners. We support, connect and champion these campaigners, equipping them to go after the social change they seek.

The Chair will hold the Board and staff team to account for SMK’s mission and vision, provide inclusive leadership to the Board and ensure that Board members fulfil their duties and responsibilities for the effective governance of SMK. The Chair will line manage and support the Chief Executive and ensure that the Board functions as a unit and works closely with the Chief Executive and staff team to achieve agreed objectives. They may also be asked to act as an ambassador and a public face of SMK in partnership with the Chief Executive and the Board.

We provide activities, opportunities, information, and support for people with a learning disability or autism, their parents and siblings.
For all our projects and activities we are dependent on volunteers.

Our Summer Project
Mon 28th July – Fri 8th August (excluding Sat/Sun), 9:30am – 5:30pm in North London.

We are currently looking for energetic and enthusiastic volunteers, to join us on our fantastic fun-filled Summer Social Development Project.

Volunteers and our members who have disabilities get to know each other as they take part in fun and challenging workshops including sports & games, arts & crafts, cooking and enjoying a day out in London.

What you'll do
On the project you and a fellow volunteer will be paired with one of our members with a learning disability or autism. You'll support and encourage them to take part in a wide range of activities led by professional therapists and workshop leaders.

Our core activities are sports & games, arts & crafts, drama and music. Previous additional workshops have also included photography, football and cooking and you’ll plan your own exciting outing around London with a fellow volunteer and the Kith & Kids member you're linked with.

Not only is it a time full of fun and games for you and our members, you are a vital part in supporting them to develop their social skills in a day-to-day environment.

What you need
You do not need experience. Full disability awareness training will be provided before you begin volunteering with us.
The only requirements we ask of you are enthusiasm, energy and to be open-minded.
Minimum age for volunteers is 18.

How much time?
The project runs for 10 days, Mon 28th July – Fri 8th August (excluding Sat/Sun), 9:30am – 5:30pm  in North London.

Everyone gets the most out of the project if you come for the full ten days as you'll build a close relationship with the member you'll have been supporting and will create the most impact.

The Role

Working alongside our Chief Executive, Kavita Prasad, and the Senior Leadership Team, our trustees steer the organisation in achieving its charitable aims and setting its strategic direction.

We are looking for three new Trustees to join us. We are looking for candidates with an interest in international development and disability inclusion. 

Based on our recent Trustee skills audit we have identified specific needs for Trustees with the following expertise and/or experience: 

• Business leaders with connections in the corporate world
• People with experience of fundraising
• People with experience of international development and disability  
• People with lived experience of disability and/or caring for a family member with disability
• Representation of the geographies that Sense International works in 

Key Responsibilities 

• Ensure the organisation carries out the statutory responsibilities of a trustee in an efficient and effective manner in keeping with its objectives and mandate
• Represent and promote Sense International’s vision and values internally and externally, and to serve occasionally as a spokesperson and public representative for Sense International when requested
• Contribute to development of strategy and setting the strategic direction and ensure high level oversight of delivery of the organisation’s strategy.
• Ensure good governance and compliance including risk management, identifying and addressing issues that require the attention of the Board
• Support Sense International’s fundraising efforts
• Contribute to sub-committees and ad-hoc bodies as considered appropriate by Board (e.g. Fundraising Advisory Committee, Finance and Audit Committee, Programmes Advisory Committee).
• Bring specific skills and experience to the Board and to lead on issues connected to these if asked by the Chair. 

The Board meets at least quarterly in London, with meetings held late afternoon on a weekday. We prefer to hold our meetings face-to-face, with most of our Trustees attending in person.  However we can offer hybrid options and are flexible to accommodate the right candidates. 

Trustees are encouraged to support other Sense International events and provide ad-hoc support to the Executive and Senior Leadership Team in between meetings. They are also encouraged to join the board sub committees who support the work of the board. These committees meet at least quarterly. 

Trustee roles are not paid but reasonable expenses can be paid. There is no requirement to have served on a Board previously, and we are keen to diversify the range of voices, perspectives and backgrounds represented. 

Person Specification

Essential

• Ability to consistently devote time and effort to the role
• Ability to contribute to strategic thinking
• Ability to communicate your area of specialism to other members of the board with different specialist knowledge
• Evidence of personal integrity and high ethical standards and strong values consistent with those of Sense International
• Ability to understand financial information
• Commitment to diversity and for the respect and dignity of our stakeholders and their experience and expertise

• Excellent interpersonal skills, including teamwork.
• Ability to mobilise personal networks for fundraising and advocacy purposes. 

Desirable

• Experience of charity governance and understanding of the respective responsibilities of Trustees and staff.
• Knowledge of international development, disability or other human rights issues.

Experience of working in the international development sector or a background in any of the eight countries where SI works.

About us

Our research and insights helped secure over £1 billion of government funding for children’s services, numeracy education and charities struggling with the cost of living. The government has committed an additional £250 million for children’s social care in 2025-26, partially due to our research into the state of children’s services funding.

We were founded in 2009 by Andy Haldane, former Chief Economist of the Bank of England, and Martin Brookes, former economist at the Bank of England and Goldman Sachs. Our chair is Tera Allas, former Chief Economist at McKinsey, and we are supported by Lord Gus O’Donnell, former Cabinet Secretary, as our Honorary President.

Our three-year strategy provides the most explicit statement yet of our desire to better understand and tackle low wellbeing. It sets out ambitious plans for achieving more impact – by expanding what we already do so successfully to new audiences and partners. It also pledges to achieve deeper impact – by growing our expertise and influence. And it emphasises our commitment to better working – by investing in the development of our people and processes. 

CEO Matt Whittaker leads our executive team including a Director of Operations and Finance, a Director of Development, a Director of Policy and Communications, a Director of Services, and a Chief Economist. The executive is supported by a team of over 20 staff.

About the role

Post type: Voluntary position

We are seeking one or two trustees with fundraising experience. You will have the drive and commitment to support our strategic development and help build our network, reach, and funding base. You will work collaboratively, representing, reflecting and seeking a diverse range of opinions. You should be committed to our vision and values and be able to communicate this enthusiasm to others.

Key responsibilities

Specific responsibilities:

 Fundraising

• Ensure, via membership of main Board, that PBE has an effective and sustainable fundraising strategy to underpin its business plan and future ambitions.
• Be a member of the Development Committee, which provides more specialist advice and guidance to the Director of Development and team.
• Be a champion for fundraising, increasing knowledge, confidence and enthusiasm across the full set of trustees and other supporters (e.g., patrons).
• Leverage personal and professional networks to identify and introduce potential funders to PBE and play an active role in helping convert these relationships into committed long-term supporters.

Board responsibilities:

Governance

• Ensure PBE has a clear vision and strategic direction and that we are focused on carrying out our purpose for public benefit.
• Delegate authority to the CEO within the terms of the strategic plan and approve key performance indicators.
• Appoint and remove the CEO and monitor, support and hold him to account for the delegated functions.

Compliance

• Ensure that we comply with our governing documents, legal and regulatory requirements and take final responsibility (as per the Memorandum of Association) for PBE.

Judgement

• Make balanced, informed decisions, be prepared to question and challenge when necessary, and help maintain a balanced, constructive relationship between the board and the executive.

Resource oversight

• Ensure resources are deployed effectively.
• Ensure that plans and budgets are in keeping with the aims of the organisation.
• Approve budgets to ensure PBE continues to manage cash flows and reserves prudently.

Accountability

• Ensure that our governance is of the highest possible standard, act with all due care and skill and manage all risks – financial, reputational and others – efficiently and effectively.

Engagement

• Monitor the operating environment in which PBE works, address emerging issues that may impact on our strategy, planning or reputation with key stakeholders; ensure that we retain our ethos, values and standards and offer advice to the CEO and board on areas of personal experience and expertise.

About you

We are looking for exceptional trustees to join the board. Applications are particularly welcomed from those with experience in fundraising for think tank or research-based organisations, and also from those with established philanthropic networks.
