Job description

The Organisation

Plan International is an independent development and humanitarian organisation that advances children’s rights and equality for girls.

We believe in the power and potential of every child. But this is often suppressed by poverty, violence, exclusion and discrimination and it’s girls who are most affected.

Working together with children, young people, our supporters and partners, we strive for a just world, tackling the root causes of the challenges facing girls and all vulnerable children.

We support children’s rights from birth until they reach adulthood. And we enable children to prepare for – and respond to – crises and adversity. We drive changes in practice and policy at local, national and global levels using our reach, experience and knowledge.

We have been building powerful partnerships for children for over 80 years and are now active in more than 70 countries.

The Opportunity

As the Deployable Education in Emergencies (EiE) Specialist, you will provide technical support to Plan International’s country offices by responding to medium and large-scale emergencies to develop, implement, monitor and evaluate EiE programmes. You will also support the Plan International Country Offices in the development of preparedness and disaster risk reduction plans for education.

Whilst on deployments (which could sometimes be at short notice), you will have up to five staff members reporting to you and a number of indirect reports. You will ensure that all work done by the key emergency and development staff is focussed on: education, ECD, child protection and others, to support integrated programming that meets the multi-sectoral needs of affected girls and boys. This will be in line with Plan International’s Global Strategy.

This will all be done whilst building and maintaining relationships with relevant government departments and key donors.

The Individual

We are looking to recruit someone with significant experiences in planning, designing and implementing integrated humanitarian programmes. You will also have experience of working in a range of humanitarian contexts (e.g. refugee, conflict, rapid onset).

An understanding of key EiE issues is essential, as is having the experience of conducting educational needs assessments and the ability to build on education technical areas with a variety of audiences.

You will have excellent negotiation and representation skills, alongside the ability to work comfortably with ethnically diverse staff in a sensitive environment.

It is essential that you are fluent in both written and spoken English and French, with fluency in Spanish being desirable.

Location: Flexible. (Preferably Global Hub, Woking) or based in a location with a Plan office and with the legal right to work in the location.

Reports to: Global Lead for Education in Emergencies

Salary: Competitive (in line with market rates for your location)

Closing Date: 27 November 2019

Early application is encouraged as we will review applications throughout the advertising period and reserve the right to close the advert early.

Please note that only applications and CVs written in English will be accepted.

A range of pre-employment checks will be undertaken in conformity with Plan International's Child Protection Policy.

As an international child centred community development organisation, Plan International is fully committed to promoting the realisation of children's rights including their right to protection from violence and abuse. That means we have particular responsibilities to children that we come into contact with.

Plan International believes that in a world where children face so many threats of harm, it is our duty to ensure that we, as an organisation, do everything we can to keep children safe. We must not contribute in any way to harming or placing children at risk.

Plan International operates an equal opportunities policy and actively encourages diversity, welcoming applications from all areas of the international community.
