Digital Editor

SCI (Society of Chemical Industry), a registered charity, was established in 1881 as an innovation hub, bringing together scientists, inventors and entrepreneurs to create solutions to the societal needs of the day. The founders of the Society went on to establish some of the significant businesses of the last industrial revolution.

Today the Society, active internationally, is still focussed on its charitable objective bringing together experts to provide science-based solutions to current societal challenges, such as tackling climate change, feeding a burgeoning global population, developing new energy solutions and striving towards health and wellbeing for all. The Society runs multiple conferences and events, supports early career scientists and engineers, works with government and regulators, and disseminates and distributes knowledge through its publication activities.

SCI has been in the publishing space since 1882 and produces a range of publications from peer-reviewed journals to a globally recognised magazine Chemistry & Industry. More recently, SCI has established a new Digital Media team, focussed on generating and distributing content through its digital channels.

The Society is now looking to recruit a Digital Editor. The Digital Editor’s principal responsibility is to increase the reach and impact of SCI’s content across multiple digital platforms. The role will involve developing the editorial strategy and content plan, generating content including news and reviews), writing editorials, managing the digital platforms and providing leadership for a growing digital team.  The role oversees delivery of internal and external content for SCI’s print publication Chemistry & Industry and SCI’s peer reviewed journals.

The role would suit a self-starter who appreciates and is able to communicate the importance of science-based innovation. We are looking for a candidate who can shape the future of SCI’s digital activities, bringing new ideas and being proactive in implementing them.

Candidates should be at a Senior Editorial level with a minimum of five years’ experience in the science and technology space. The position is based at the Society’s headquarters in Belgrave Square, London and is part of the management team, reflecting the importance of the role. The starting salary is negotiable, dependent on prior experience.

  • Degree in Science or Engineering and/or experience of science writing required.
  • Degree or qualification in Media/Journalism/English, or equivalent experience, required.
  • A minimum of 5 years’ experience in a senior editorial role, related to science and technology, preferably with a news focus.
  • Experience of managing a team.
  • Proactive self-starter.
  • Highly organised with a strong eye for detail.
  • Excellent communication skills.
  • Ability to handle scholarly content in addition to news and magazine content.
