Job description

About the role

This is an exciting opportunity for the right individual. Our Reframing Disability in News pilot programme will tackle the current under-representation of people with disabilities in the news to ensure their voices are heard. We are very fortunate to have the BBC as a partner organisation. The programme will extend the reporting methodology and other processes of the BBC's 50:50 Project - which has been successful in increasing women's voices in the news and current affairs - to disability.

We believe this pilot has the potential to transform public interest news through the greater representation of disabled people who account for 20% of the UK population but are massively under-served when it comes to the news, eroding their ability to participate in their communities and democratic life more broadly. If successful, we believe the programme will lead to disabled people engaging differently and playing a greater role in news reporting, production and distribution.

We are looking for an experienced programme manager, who is passionate about the rights of disabled people and ideally has a background in journalism and news reporting, as well as lived experience of disability either as a disabled person or a carer or from working or volunteering with a disability organisation.

You will manage the delivery of our media training workshops for disabled spokespeople and disability charities, our disability awareness workshops for BBC programme producers and journalists, and other events designed to connect journalists with disabled experts and disability charities.  Currently, we have workshops and events planned for London, Salford and Birmingham.

You will also be responsible for creating a directory of disabled spokespeople who are experts in their field.

You will also coordinate Advisory Group meetings, convening journalists, charities and people with lived experience to shape the programme. Working closely with the Marcomms team you will manage the creation and launch of an archive of news reports/case studies, free online media training materials and best practice guides.

Reframing Disability

In October 2019, Media Trust convened scores of disability charities and disabled people with media and creative industry experts to review the current lack of representation and inclusion of disabled people in the media both off-screen and on-screen, and to work together to find solutions. You can watch the video of the event and read the key event take-aways via our website.

This is an exciting new area of work we plan to grow in the next 18 months, through working with disability charities and people with lived experience of disabilities as well as media professionals.

This post holds responsibility for every level of project management including logistics, liaising with disability charities and other stakeholders, partnership management, venue hire and catering. Travel throughout the UK and overnight stays may also be required.

This is a fulfilling role and an excellent opportunity for someone with experience within the charity, community or media (in particular the news) sectors.

About Media Trust

Media Trust strives to bridge the gap between the media and creative industry and charities, under-represented communities and young people to give them a stronger voice.  We do this by promoting skills-based volunteering, empowering young people from diverse backgrounds to work in the media and creative industry and facilitating capacity building and multi-stakeholder dialogue and collaboration.

We’re proud to be helping charities and under-represented communities to challenge entrenched negative stereotypes and fight for more authentic media representation, giving a stronger voice to people with lived experience. We’re helping charities with their communications strategy, advocacy and campaigning, storytelling, content creation, press engagement, and digital and social media. From January to September 2019, Media Trust supported 2000 charities and engaged 1300 volunteers through our programmes.

We have an extensive network of 40 corporate partners including the BBC, BBH, Channel 4, Edelman, Facebook, Google, Guardian Media Group, ITV, Sky, Twitter and Weber Shandwick, to name but a few, who we work closely alongside to deliver our programmes.
