Job description

Department: Science and Innovation

We are seeking a pro-active, innovative individual to take on the role of Groups and Awards Officer within the Science and Innovation department.

The role

This is a rewarding, customer-facing role which has responsibility for organising professional networks for physicists and managing the IOP’s high profile Awards that celebrate excellence in researchers, educators, technicians, apprentices and businesses.

The role is ideal for a dynamic individual who has excellent administrative skills and is able to bring these skills to an organisation that is about making positive change for society in the big challenge areas which include climate, health, AI, energy and big data through the work of the physics community. So, if you’re enthusiastic with a ‘can-do’ attitude, whilst also being meticulous and efficient, then this role is for you.

The role is responsible for delivering a number of services for members and the wider physics community. Responsibilities will include:

  • Manage specialist interest groups across physics disciplines, themes and industry sectors – with the aim of engaging and delivering value to all our members.
  • Administer the IOP Awards and ensure high quality nominations that are inclusive [in terms of roles, gender, institution, geography, sector and discipline] in order to recognise and celebrate outstanding contributions to physics from across the breadth and diversity of our community.
  • Ensure members serving on committees are well supported in order to deliver the aims of the committee and that they have a good and rewarding experience in that process.
  • Produce briefing papers for senior management and committee chairs including collation and analysis of relevant data to inform discussions and debate.

The Person

We are looking for a team player with prior experience in administration and customer facing roles. As a successful candidate, you will have strong communication and listening skills and have experience in taking minutes and accurately recording meetings. You will also have the flexibility to deal with a wide range of enquiries and the ability to prioritise. The role involves a significant level of contact with Institute members, which requires a high level of diplomacy and tact in order to be able to maintain a good relationship while ensuring that Institute policies and procedures are appropriately followed.
