New College Worcester is a unique college, delivering education to young people who are blind or vision-impaired (VI) in a beautiful, rural setting to the southwest of Worcester. About the role
We are seeking to appoint three new Governors to join our Board as well as having a role on a relevant committee.
As a Governor, you will support our organisational aspirations and ensure that the College can continue to offer high-quality education in a setting where our learners are safe and well cared for. Safeguarding and wellbeing are paramount to us for our learners.
We are looking for Governors with the following expertise:
- Finance, Resources & Safeguarding Committee
Our Finance, Resources and Safeguarding Committee (FRSC) is a space where we discuss a broad range of issues relating to the wider functions of our college, not just finance. Therefore, we seek candidates with expertise that will complement the existing skill sets on the Board, such as health and safety, cyber security, marketing and student recruitment. We would also be keen to hear from those with strategic expertise in finance in an educational context.
- Education Services & Safeguarding Committee
We have a broad range of expertise on our Education Services and Safeguarding Committee (ESSC) and find great value in having a diverse range of experience on our Board to offer guidance, advice and challenge with the decisions we make in relation to our curriculum and care. We seek candidates with strategic experience in the cross-section of the education sector, including secondary, further and specialist provision. Candidates with additional experience in safeguarding in an educational context will be very much welcomed.
- Residential Care & Safeguarding Committee
As a member of our Residential Care & Safeguarding Committee (RCSC), we seek candidates with knowledge and experience of safeguarding young people and vulnerable adults, along with an up-to-date knowledge of relevant policies and practice. This does not need to have been in a formal education setting. We are open to candidates with experience in the residential care sector, especially where this relates to young people.

The Governance, Audit & Risk Committee (GAR) Purpose & Duties:
The Governance, Audit and Risk Committee is a Sub-Committee of the Board of Trustees of the 1851 Marine Trust (the “Trust”). The Committee shall meet not less than 4 times a year and at such other times as it considers necessary.
The Committee shall provide support, assurance and recommendations to the Board on:
- Best practice in charity governance and as appropriate governance arrangements for the Trust
- The effectiveness of the Trust’s internal control and risk management framework, including key policies and procedures
- The conduct of the external independent examination or audit and the Trust’s annual report and accounts, including the performance of the independent examiners’
- The day-to-day financial operations and controls including monitoring income and expenditure against the annual budget
Trustee - Role and Responsibilities
As a Trustee your role will be to use your skills and your personal experience to contribute to the work of the Board. Trustee responsibilities will include the following:
Leadership:
Promote the vision, values and objectives of the 1851 Marine Trust and take an active role in supporting the Trust’s strategy. Assist fellow Trustees in agreeing strategic aims, ensuring that the necessary financial and human resources are in place to meet its objectives, and that performance is effectively monitored and reviewed. Engage positively and collaboratively in Board discussion of agenda items.
Management:
In accordance with agreed Board procedures, monitor the performance of the Trust, identify and manage risks posed by its activities and assist in the satisfaction of statutory duties around the preparation of annual reports and accounts, fundraising and safeguarding. Provide independent judgement and advice on issues of strategy, vision, performance, resources and standards of conduct and apply this to the benefit of the organisation, its stakeholders and wider community. Participate in committees as determined and delegated by the Board of Trustees.
Governance:
Commit to working to, and encouraging within the Trust, the highest standards of probity, integrity and governance and contribute to ensuring that the internal governance arrangements, including the management of conflicts of interest, conform with the Trust’s constitution, best practice and statutory requirements. Obtain assurance that financial information is accurate and that financial controls and risk management systems are robust and appropriate.
Requirements for new Trustees:
Able to attend 4-6 meetings a year with sufficient time to review meeting papers. The time commitment is estimated at a minimum 20 hours per year but could increase depending on the outcome of agenda items and related sub-committee work. Documents are sent to Trustees by email and meetings are held both electronically and in person.
Trustees/Board members are not paid, though reasonable expenses are claimable. Initial term of office is for three years.

Time Commitment
The appointment is for a three-year term, which can be renewable for a maximum of nine years (subject to recommendation from the Committee Chair and Governing Council’s Nominations Committee).
There are five Governing Council meetings and two strategy days per year, which are held in person, usually in September, November, February, April, and July.
Attendance at five of those meetings (at least one of which would be a strategy day) as a minimum is usual.
Governing Council Meetings are usually four hours long and include a seminar session. Before meetings, preparation time will be required to read through committee papers, organise thoughts, and ensure contribution to the debate.
Governing Council Members are required to complete mandatory training modules and induction and are invited to attend networking events and University graduation ceremonies.

Key Responsibilities

Background Information
This English School is located in Pablo Nogues. In the past, this school has had to face many problems which have completely changed Silvia's original plan. She began the school with three other teachers through the concept of an affordable school for the children of the town whose parents belong to the working class. However, because the school functions without any funding from the government and because of the economic crisis, the lack of financial support almost forced Silvia to declare bankruptcy because she could no longer pay the teachers. Without change, the school would have had to close but thanks to Armin, one of the founders of Voluntario Global, they were able to find a solution and keep the doors of this invaluable place open. Instead of paying teachers, Armin helped with the creation of a cooperative that will give older students the opportunity to teach younger students with the help of volunteers. So now the school hires their own graduate students to teach in the classrooms and thus gives them the opprotunity to have experience in order to find a formal job.
Why is this project important for the community?
Although there are no professional teachers, the volunteer teachers provide a rich and cultured education. Other English schools are between three to five times more expensive than this one, therefore, parents living in nearby neighborhoods are not able to send all of their children to study English. This is why the school is important for the community; it allows all the children to have the same opportunities and access to education, and it is also a way to fight for social justice. There is a lack of infrastructure, such as running water and paved roads in this particular neighbourhood and it is also known to be “left aside” because the state does not intervene. However, the school helps the families and also the young people of the town, because it also provides a first-job opportunity to students that are more advanced. This allows students to have a disposable income with which they can travel; an almost foreign opportunity to most.
Volunteer’s Role
The volunteers use their knowledge of English to help the students in group classes. The presence of native speakers evidently is very helpful to the children’s learning of the language.
Your role in the school will be proportionate to your level of Spanish and the amount of time you can volunteer for. Consequently, this program is ideal for undergraduate students of modern languages on a year abroad, particularly those interested in teaching. If your Spanish and/or time is limited, you will be able to assist classes.
What can you learn as a volunteer?
Learning is a two-way street because the volunteer also learns through this experience. Their official duties are to assist the teenaged teachers, help them with pronunciation or grammatical rules, correct homework, read and explain to the children the basic elements of the language. Moreover, they can also help the oldest students get ready for international exams. This work allows the volunteer to exchange with people from different cultures, mainly thanks to the mix between communities from various countries of Latin America. Furthermore, teaching is the perfect exercise to learn how to speak to an audience and to get its attention. The volunteer learns to communicate with the youngest children who don't speak English correctly, and is able to learn how to adapt quickly and use other means of communication. Above all, the volunteer is able to create relationships with their students that will go beyond the classroom.

Role Overview
We are seeking a confident and compassionate volunteer to co-facilitate our mental health and wellbeing programmes for young people in school settings. This role involves working with small groups of students to support emotional learning and create safe, engaging spaces to deliver the Discovery Colleges evidence based psychoeducation programmes. You will work alongside one of our core facilitators to deliver sessions and support programme planning.
Experience in facilitation, teaching, youth work or similar settings is beneficial. We welcome both lived experience and professional expertise in mental health and wellbeing, and value the unique perspective each volunteer brings.
You’ll need to feel comfortable working in schools and be confident engaging with young people in a supportive, structured environment. This is a rewarding opportunity to make a real difference in young lives while being part of a collaborative and values-led team. It’s also a great chance to build your facilitation skills, gain hands-on experience in mental health education, and grow your confidence working with young people.

Overview

Role Overview
We are seeking a confident and compassionate volunteer to co-facilitate our mental health and wellbeing programmes for adults who care for or support young people struggling with their mental health. Working alongside an ODC staff facilitator, you'll help create safe, inclusive spaces that encourage open conversation, emotional safety, and mutual respect.
This role is ideal for someone with lived or professional experience of mental health who is confident working with groups and interested in supporting others. You’ll contribute to meaningful sessions that empower adults and indirectly benefit young people across Oxfordshire.
We ask all volunteers to be open, honest, and reflective about the skills they already bring, the areas they’d like to develop, and their current mental health and wellbeing so that we can support you to facilitate safely and sustainably.
This is a rewarding opportunity to make a real difference in the lives of young people, while being part of a collaborative, values-driven team. It’s also a great chance to develop your facilitation skills and gain hands-on experience in mental health psychoeducation. We provide full training, regular supervision, and ongoing support and we welcome applications from individuals with diverse backgrounds and experiences.
Key Tasks
As a facilitator, your activities may include, but are not limited to:

Co-facilitate engaging, structured group sessions for supportive adults in a community setting, alongside one of our staff facilitators

Create a safe, inclusive and supportive group environment, encouraging participation, emotional safety, and mutual respect

Managing the group alone for short periods and engaging in sensitive 1:1 conversations if the staff facilitator is briefly otherwise engaged.

Undertake appropriate safeguarding training, be alert to safeguarding concerns, follow ODC’s safeguarding procedures, and report any concerns promptly to the designated safeguarding lead.

Assist with setting up and packing down sessions, and help manage session resources as needed

Take part in session debriefs, offering insights and feedback to support ongoing programme improvement

Participate in relevant training and supervision, including safeguarding, ODC policies, programme orientation, and ongoing reflective practice

Work alongside ODC staff, upholding our values around co-production, youth voice, and mental health support

Support with session planning and preparation, contributing ideas and helping shape delivery in line with programme aims

Support with programme administration and data entry, such as attendance logs, feedback forms or basic evaluation tasks
