We know a lot of people have had negative learning experiences in the past, so our programme is designed to be different, with no exams and no classrooms. Our unique, evidence-based Turning Pages reading manuals and Count Me In numeracy manuals are used by thousands of learners in prisons and the community to improve reading and numeracy skills. 

Prison volunteers live near to their local prison so that they can visit about once a month during the working week to nurture the growth of the Shannon Trust in their prison. They help unlock the power of reading by offering advice, guidance, training and support to prison staff and prisoner mentors who help other prisoners to improve their skills 1 to 1.

We are looking for volunteers who are able to give a regular, reliable commitment for ideally two years and able to deliver engaging training to groups of people in prisons. Volunteers do not need to be teachers or qualified traininers, full training will be given. Due to the nature of the role, prison security vetting will be required.

We provide training for the role via e-learning and 4 training sessions which are a mix of live, online and group training.

Purpose of the Role

As a Volunteer Receptionist, you will be the welcoming face of Citizens Advice Sefton, helping clients access our services efficiently and ensuring the smooth running of reception duties during advice sessions.

Key Tasks and Responsibilities

• Greet all clients professionally and with compassion, creating a welcoming and inclusive environment.

• Monitor client arrivals and check in clients with appointments using our Casebook system.

• Review and update client details using registration sheets or by creating new client records.

• Ensure client registration sheets are available by printing copies from the intranet.

• Scan and return documents handed in by clients and upload them to the correct case record with a note to the adviser.

• Support advisers and supervisors by completing administrative and practical tasks during advice sessions.

• Follow all data protection, safeguarding, and confidentiality procedures.

• Be aware of and follow health and safety protocols including fire evacuation procedures and personal safety guidance.

Skills and Qualities Needed

• Friendly, patient, and approachable manner

• Good communication skills and ability to deal with people in a non-judgemental way

• Organised and reliable

• Basic IT skills and willingness to learn our internal systems (full training provided)

• Able to work as part of a team and take direction from supervisors

• Commitment to the aims and principles of the Citizens Advice service, including confidentiality and impartiality

Training Provided

All reception volunteers will be supported with:

• An induction to Citizens Advice Sefton

• Casebook client management training

• Health & safety and safeguarding awareness

• Ongoing support from the supervisor and training team

Role Description

Join Off The Record, an independent charity that has been proudly serving the Havant Borough area since 1977. Our mission is to empower young people and their families in South East Hampshire by supporting their emotional health and well-being. We provide vital one-on-one and family counseling, support, a young carers project and group services for individuals aged 8-25 and their families.

If you are passionate about making a difference in the lives of young people, we invite you to volunteer with us at our main office, located at 138 Purbrook Way, Leigh Park. We are currently seeking dedicated volunteers to support our counseling service by answering phones, providing information, engaging in friendly conversations, and offering signposting advice to clients awaiting our services and also opportunities to assist with awareness events and our group activities and young carers services.

What We Expect, Your Commitment to Us

• Submission of your CV, including explanations for any employment gaps, to comply with our rigorous safer recruitment processes
• A compelling cover letter detailing your motivations for wanting to volunteer at Off The Record.
• Two recent references from employers or academic sources (DBS checks will be carried out as a requirement of the role).
• Full attendance in the "Be A Volunteer" training program to gain essential skills and knowledge.
• A dedication to committing to a weekly group or rota slot, along with attendance at monthly support meetings (a minimum commitment of 2.5 hours per week plus one hour per month for supervision).

We are eager to welcome passionate individuals to start in Summer 2025, which will include a two-half-day training session, followed by shadowing and training on our systems and procedures.

Children’s charity Mentor Link is recruiting Volunteer Mentors from the West Midlands and Gloucestershire area to provide one to one support to vulnerable children and young people in schools and the community. Mentor Link are keen to hear from people in business and the community, who would be interested in becoming a Volunteer Mentor to support a young person to achieve their full potential. The mentors are specially trained to listen to and support young people and aim to improve their self- esteem and engagement in learning. The charity has an excellent track record of success in achieving positive outcomes with children and young people.
