What is a Serving Community Team Volunteering Coordinator?

There is a SSAFA presence throughout the serving community, both in the UK and overseas. In many areas, SSAFA have Serving Community Teams which offer financial, practical, and emotional support to serving personnel and their families. Each team is formed of a group of trained volunteers who make this possible.

A Volunteering Coordinator is a key role within the Team, supporting with local recruitment, induction, and celebration of volunteers and volunteering. They ensure volunteers are welcomed and supported. This role also has voting rights for the grant giving process.

Volunteers are the lifeblood of SSAFA. We have been involving volunteers in supporting the Armed Forces community for more than 130 years. Our beneficiaries come from all backgrounds and age groups and the number of people contacting us for help rises each year. What will you be doing?

Although every SSAFA Serving Community Team has different needs, below are the main activities of a Volunteering Coordinator:

• Keeping track and keeping in touch: Maintaining accurate and up-to-date lists of volunteer details, ensuring volunteers complete training, checking in with volunteers about their experience and passing on feedback.
• Monitoring and planning: Working alongside the Chair to monitor volunteer numbers and develop plans to recruit new volunteers as required.
• Creating local links: Taking opportunities to advertise and promote volunteering opportunities locally, including linking with local volunteer centres and community groups. Liaising with the Engagement and Events Coordinator and SSAFA’s Marketing and Communications team for support with branding and publicity materials.
• Welcoming and supporting: Working in partnership with SSAFA Central Office teams to coordinate local volunteer recruitment and induction, supporting new volunteers through these steps. Ensuring every volunteer has access to supervision and support, signposting to support from SSAFA Central Office teams as required.
• Celebrating and saying thank you: Seeking opportunities to celebrate volunteering, engaging in local initiatives and finding ways to say thank you to volunteers for all their efforts.
• Partnership working: building positive relationships and working together with national and regional employees, who are available to offer you support.
• Being a volunteering champion: working with the Regional Operations Support Manager to promote volunteering best practice across the Team and ensure volunteers have the best possible experience with SSAFA.

Budget Oversight: Collaborate with the finance committee to develop and manage the fundraising budget, ensuring efficient allocation of resources and adherence to financial goals.

Compliance and Reporting: Ensure that Focus’s fundraising activities comply with legal requirements.

Advocacy and Public Relations: Act as an ambassador for Focus Birmingham advocating for the rights and needs of adults with disabilities. Assist in developing public relations strategies to raise awareness and support for the cause.

The Gravesend RNLI fundraising team have a vacancy for a volunteer treasurer. The team work closely with the lifeboat crew and water safety team at Gravesend lifeboat station to hold a rage of events, develop partnerships and drive engagement locally. The treasurer is a key member of the team, ensurring financial compliance and providing a brief report on income at fundraising meetings (currently held every 6 weeks in Gravesend)

About the role

After several years of relying on the efforts from our Co-Founders, Trustees and temporary volunteers we are looking to take the next step in our growth journey through the placement of our first longer-term volunteer.

This role will be designed to oversee all marketing and social media activities of the organization, and to provide leadership to a small group of wonderful and talented student volunteers from London based Universities as they complete tactical projects for ParaPride as part of their studies. This will also include supporting Daniele, our Co-Founder and Community Engagement Director, with planning and reporting of their activities to the university.

The leadership you will provide will initially be indirect, with Daniele being ultimately responsible for the students activities, so we expect this to be a wonderful opportunity for a seasoned marketing or social media professional who would like the opportunity to gain team leadership experience. 

Duties

• Advise on how to best grow overall awareness and success of the ParaPride brand.

• Oversee the continuous development of our content creation schedule and distribution of engaging, thought provoking and educational content for our media channels, notably LinkedIn, Twitter, Facebook and Instagram.

• Provide support and guidance to a small team of student volunteers to develop social media and marketing content that supports the mission, vision and values of ParaPride - directly participating in the creation of content at your discretion. 

• Ad-hoc creation and distribution of promotional assets for ParaPride events.

• Identify and establish potential additional media channels where it is sustainable to do so with the resources available. 

• Maintain the organisations Brand assets and monitor and advise of their use and ensure consistency with our established tone of voice in written content. 

• Build partnerships with social media brand ambassadors/influencers to support content creation and brand awareness.

About you

Ideally we are looking for someone with 3+ years experience in marketing and/or social media. However, we encourage marketing graduates who can demonstrate strong alignment with our mission, vision and values.

We strongly welcome candidates that have lived experiences of being disabled and/or LGBTQ+, although this not an explicit requirement 

Bonus

If you have strong graphic design skills it would be a big plus.
 

Level of commitment

We are a growing charity and while it is our goal to provide financial compensation for this role in the future, we are unable to initially. In full transparency, this is only an indication of our ambition and will be dependent on a lot of factors linked to appropriate funding. We are dedicated to be fully respectful of your time, but expect a minimum contribution of 4 hours per month on average (varying according to demand), remote, completely flexible and at time convenient to you. As this is a supervisory role, which we hope to bring continuity to our ways of working, we would like to work with you with an intended  2+ years term (situationally dependent).

To support around 100 Afghan and Muslim girls, aged 8-16, from refugee communities to develop their participation in football. The project will enable them to develop football skills and knowledge, participate in games, and socialise in a female-only culturally appropriate ambience but within the wider open-access setting of public sports facilities and local parks. The project will give the girls confidence to participate, reassure their parents that their cultural practices are being respected, and increase the visibility of girls’ participation in sport among the wider community.

This project will enable these girls, who are often excluded from mainstream sport, to play football for their physical and psychological health. It challenges public stereotypes and under-representation of Afghan and Muslim girls in community sport. ACAA will create opportunities for them to play football in public spaces in West London. This volunteer will work alongside the Football Project Coordinator and Head Coach to run sessions.

Responsibilities

Assist with Training Sessions: Work alongside coaches to organize and run training sessions for young children, focusing on fundamental skills such as dribbling, passing, shooting, and basic game tactics.

Provide Support during Matches: Attend matches and provide support to both players and coaches, offering encouragement, guidance, and assistance as needed.

Promote Sportsmanship: Emphasize the importance of teamwork, respect, and sportsmanship among players, helping to create a positive and inclusive atmosphere within the club.

Ensure Safety: Prioritize the safety and well-being of children at all times, following club protocols and guidelines to minimize risks of injury during training sessions and matches.

Assist with Equipment Setup: Help set up and organize equipment, including cones, balls, and goalposts, before training sessions and matches, ensuring a smooth and efficient operation.

Encourage Participation: Encourage active participation and engagement from all players, fostering a love for the game and helping each child reach their full potential.

Communicate with Parents: Maintain open and transparent communication with parents, providing updates on their child's progress, upcoming events, and any relevant club information.
