As Volunteer Activity Lead, you will provide support to people seeking asylum who live in Wakefield through delivering activities that support people’s wellbeing and integration.

We provide support to people seeking asylum in Wakefield while their asylum claims are being considered. Being new to communities, our clients need additional help to reduce isolation and help develop their confidence. We do that by organising activities that keep them busy, engaged and connected with locally available services. Your role is to lead on activity planning and delivery – you will encourage clients to come, design posters, help foster a friendly and non-judgmental environment. You will help with outings and proactively include clients in brainstorming ideas on activities that will make the most positive difference in their lives. Activities to deliver can match your own interests and skills – yoga, conversational English club, sports, sewing, arts and crafts – the list is endless!

Your role is crucial in complementing existing Migrant Help services by helping provide additional opportunities for clients to improve their skills and develop confidence.

What you will do

• Organise and deliver activities to people seeking asylum in agreed locations weekly
• Promote a safe and non-judgemental environment for people joining activities
• Organise and adapt activities centring clients’ voice
• Communicate with other volunteers and staff where needed to deliver activities smoothly
• Encourage clients’ independence and provide words of encouragement, empathy
• Pack and store items securely in agreed locations
• Organise and support outings for clients.
• Create interactive posters to encourage clients to engage in activities
• ​Be a point of contact for clients during activities and forward any concerns to staff
• Regularly communicate with volunteer coordinator and staff and openly share successes, challenges and ideas on improvement.
   

​What we expect from you

• Complete relevant induction and training provided by Migrant Help
• Undergo a criminal conviction check (DBS, PVG or AccessNI).
• Commit to volunteering for a minimum of 6 months, at agreed times.
• Attend volunteer support sessions as required.
• Complete feedback forms when required highlighting any growth opportunities and honestly communicating what is not working well
• Adhere to confidentiality and safeguarding procedures
• Uphold Migrant Help’s values.
• Start volunteering at an agreed time and be punctual
• Complete all relevant documentation as required by volunteer coordinator
• Be open and understanding of different customs, values, and beliefs

​What you not be able to do

• Volunteer with us if you are under 18.
• Exchange contact information with clients
• Buy gifts, food or lend or give/receive money to/from clients
• Carry out casework tasks, such as, complete benefits applications, liaise with local authorities or refer to other services or provide immigration advice

Level the Playing Field in Development (LPFDev)

Level the Playing Field in Development (LPFDev) is a volunteer-led community challenging harmful narratives and practices in the global development sector through a decolonial lens. By addressing entrenched colonial structures, LPFDev advocates for equity, anti-racism, and decolonisation approaches that move beyond theory into practical solutions. The initiative fosters collective intentionality within the development community, creating safe spaces for open, candid dialogue while promoting more inclusive and just practices. Volunteers are welcomed with openness and creativity, encouraged to contribute their skills, learn collaboratively, and help reshape development into a field rooted in fairness, dignity, and shared global responsibility.

Outreach Coordination (Climate Justice Monitoring)

Assist in expanding LPFDev’s climate justice network by identifying and engaging with stakeholders, event organisers, and partner organizations. Facilitate collaboration opportunities and ensure LPFDev is informed about upcoming relevant climate forums.

Key Responsibilities:

• Scout and track upcoming climate-related events globally and regionally
• Contact event organizers to explore monitoring and collaboration opportunities
• Build and maintain a stakeholder engagement database
• Support communication efforts to grow LPFDev’s outreach and visibility

Skills & Experience:

• Strong organisational and interpersonal skills
• Experience in event coordination or community outreach
• Proficiency in email communication and online research
• Passion for climate justice and ethical engagement

We are looking to involve Family Engagement Volunteers to support the delivery of family engagement activities and workshops at the National Maritime Museum. This includes encouraging families to participate fully in sessions, supporting practitioners with set up and pack down, and delivering object handling experiences in galleries to bring the collection to life. 

Reporting to:

Family Programmes Facilitator and Engagement Programmes Coordinator 

This opportunity will include: 

• Supporting the delivery of family workshops, drop-in sessions, and festivals 
• Helping to prepare and tidy materials and resources before and after sessions 
• Engaging families in the galleries by leading or supporting object handling activities 
• Offering a warm and friendly welcome to all visitors during activities through playful and child led approach, ensuring everyone feels included and valued 

This opportunity offers you the chance to: 

• Develop skills and confidence in working with children, young people, and families 
• Gain experience in object handling and family engagement in a national museum 
• Contribute to creating inclusive and welcoming experiences for all families, including LGBTQ+, SEND and foster and adoptive families

Time Commitment: 

10.30am -4.30pm on weekends during term time and 10.30am -4.30pm Monday-Sunday during half terms and school holidays.  

Induction training will take place in person at the National Maritime Museum on Thursday 9th October. 

Volunteers are asked to commit to 3 months initially.
