Job description

The Royal Astronomical Society is a leading Society dedicated to the study of astronomy, solar-system science, geophysics and other closely related branches of science. Established in 1820, we have over 4,000 members, consisting of professional astronomers and geophysicists, students, advanced amateur astronomers, as well as historians of astronomy and geophysics. We are based in the historic Burlington House, where we host numerous scientific meetings and events, and also where our extensive library is housed.

We are looking for a part-time Publishing Manager. This is an exciting opportunity for an experienced publishing professional, well acquainted with the academic research environment, to strategically develop the successful publishing portfolio. Working with the current Publishing Manager, you will lead the development of our journals in partnership with our key stakeholders, as well as support the RAS’ mission, vision and strategic goals. You will manage a team of eight assistant editors, three editorial boards and the peer review workflow for the Society’s leading research journals, Geophysical Journal International (GJI), Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society (MNRAS), and RAS Techniques & Instruments (RASTI).

The ideal candidate will be a leader and manager with excellent influencing and communicating skills, be confident with handling multiple high-priority projects simultaneously, be passionate about building positive working relationships with a range of stakeholders, as well as being organised and methodical, adaptable and open to innovation and change.

You should also have the following:

  • Significant experience within academic research and peer review processes and systems.
  • A collaborative work ethic and ability to engage positively with colleagues and stakeholders.
  • Strong experience of influencing and communicating and you are highly detail-orientated.
  • Demonstrable leadership and line management experience.

While not essential, we would welcome your application if you have a PhD in astronomy or geophysics.
