Job description

About Imkaan

Imkaan was established in 1998 as a second-tier umbrella organisation to support

the specialist by and for Black and minoritised women and girl’s sector. Imkaan

currently has a membership of 41 organisations in England, Scotland and Wales.

Imkaan’s core activities have been developed around three overlapping strands –

development, research and strategic advocacy. Under these strands, Imkaan

delivers the following work: member support and sustainability, training, research

and evaluation, policy and strategic advocacy.

Imkaan has also developed a resourcing framework called Margin to Centre. Under

this framework, we generate funding for the Black and minoritised women and girls

sector with the aim to support small grassroots organisations. Imkaan’s vision,

mission and values are grounded in all aspects of our work and in the development

of the organisation.

Job Role

A consultant working for Imkaan will have a clear and comprehensive understanding

of intersectionality and work under an anti-racism framework. She will also have

experience of work in the violence against women and girls sector holding depth

knowledge of this sector and the issues impacting on Black and minoritised women

and girls. Beyond understanding and experience, Imkaan is an organisation with

collective social responsibility and we are accountable to our members and the

diverse communities of women and girls we serve. It is important that consultants

have an understanding of the context in which we deliver our work and the

importance of elevating the voices and representations of Black and minoritised

women and girls. We demonstrate responsibility by working to the best of our

abilities and by respecting and valuing each other. Imkaan is a space where we work

collaboratively and address the harms of racism and patriarchy each day and

through all aspects of our work. It is important that we show each other kindness and

challenge our own assumptions that can disrupt this important space that we have

struggled for decades to preserve. Equally, consultants must be willing to work with

Imkaan in good faith which means understanding the context highlighted above and

also respecting Imkaan’s reporting and accountability frameworks.

We are accepting Expressions of Interest in the following areas of work:

  • Strategic development and strategic planning expertise (Reference I-LC1).

  • Feminist economists who have experience with intersectional political the economy of violence approaches (Reference I-LC1).

  • Experience in infrastructure development  (Reference I-LC2).

  • Funding expertise includes an understanding of diverse funding landscapes, fundraising and onward granting working with Imkaan’s existing framework called Margin to Centre.  (References I-LC2 and I-LC3).

  • Experience in research and evaluation activity  (Reference I-LC4).

  • Consultants with creative backgrounds and experience in areas of theatre, film and spoken word who can help us develop a creative project (Reference I-SP1).

  • Consultants with creative skills to help us with website development, logo re-design and re-branding (Reference I-UR1).

  • Research consultants to work with the team supporting various research projects through fieldwork, analysis and report writing (Reference I-CAF1).

The Expression of Interest should include the following information:

  • A complete CV covering the thematic areas of interest clearly shows your track record. 

  • Two unrelated references who can support your work. You may also enclose evidence of your work.

  • Your expectations for a consultancy highlight the following: time availability, fees expected, work environment, the equipment you have to deliver the work, invoicing requirements and support requirements.

  • A supporting statement answering the following questions:

    (1) How do you identify as a Black feminist and how have applied your Black feminist knowledge and understanding to your work?

    (2) Why do you want to work with Imkaan as a consultant?

    (3) What contributions would you make to our work as outlined in the areas above?

    (4) How have you worked collaboratively with organisations in the past and what learning can you apply to this consultancy?

    (5) What will you deliver? On this question, it would be good to know concrete deliverables in relation to the consultancy and the thematic specification.

    (6) How would you approach the work (describe methodology or approach)?

You are welcome to submit a proposal for more than one consultancy.

At Imkaan we have begun to transition back to the office under a hybrid working

model. We are operating a rota system. Consultants will work as freelancers and

should not expect to access the office unless necessary. All Imkaan’s Health and

Safety policies should be reviewed upon appointment.

Black and ‘Minority Ethnic’ Women only need to apply (Schedule 9, Part 1, 158 and 159 Equality Act 2010). All consultants should provide a DBS certificate that has been issued this year.
