What you’ll be doing
Your focus will be to grow our charity’s impact and revenue streams by fundraising for environmental education, benefitting people and nature by securing funds from supporters, trusts/foundations, and businesses.
This will include building relationships with potential legators, inspiring supporters to maintain their commitment, eventually leaving the Field Studies Council a gift in their Will as well as turning strategic and operational priorities into practical funding bids.
Key responsibilities will include:
- Researching and identifying potential trusts/foundations/businesses as suitable external funders for designated target projects
- Working collaboratively with internal and external stakeholders to draft fundraising bids, developing persuasive proposals and collating appropriate supporting documentation.

- Maintaining up-to-date knowledge and understanding of relevant governmental, sector and business opportunities to identify potential funding opportunities

Where you’ll be based
The base location for this position is negotiable, with full remote working / home working a possibility. However, if you prefer working in office, we have Field Studies Centres throughout the country which you are also able to work from. We will also consider hybrid working options.
There may the occasional need to travel to meet with, colleagues, prospective funders and other stakeholders. We expect this to be limited, no more than once every 2-3 months.

It’s essential that you have experience working in a fundraising role or department. We need an experienced individual who is confident to write and submit successful fundraising bids to trusts, foundations and businesses.
You will also have experience creating and managing successful supporter journeys to optimise our donations, particularly legators.

About the Role
KHULA Education is seeking an experienced and dynamic fundraising leader to lead KHULA’s fundraising and communication efforts in the UK and South Africa. The postholder will join us at an exciting time and help us to continue our growth trajectory which has seen our annual budget increase from £250,000 to £1 million in the past several years. Supported by the South Africa based CEO, and working closely with the UK Board of Trustees, the postholder will be joined by a new Fundraising Officer who you will line manage.
We’re looking for an entrepreneurial individual with strategic vision who will play an active part in developing KHULA’s future fundraising strategy. 70% of the role is focused on fundraising directly for our work, 30% on managing KHULA’s communications including donor newsletters and social media content (this may evolve with the recruitment of an Officer).
Key Responsibilities
- Steward, retain and grow the support of our existing donor portfolio: KHULA has an existing portfolio of donors including trusts, foundations, corporates, major donors, individual and regular givers, the majority of whom are based in the UK or South Africa. The post holder is responsible for managing these relationships, including bespoke reporting for trusts and major donors, leading donor meetings and involving our Board and CEO as appropriate.
- Donor prospecting and new business: researching and generating new donor leads as well as acting on opportunities provided by our Board and others, converting prospects into supporters of our programmes.
- External communications: creating our quarterly e-newsletter to a database of ~2,000 supporters, managing our social media channels and the Annual Report, in addition to other ad hoc external communications.
- Fundraising innovation: leading on innovation in our fundraising approach, including creative campaigns to increase donations/recruit lapsed donors, developing products and offerings whilst considering cost effectiveness and ROI. Of particular interest is how to harness the giving potential of guests who are exposed to KHULA Education’s work when they visit Fugitives’ Drift Lodge in Rorke’s Drift.

Person Specification
Ideally you’ll have held a role with a similar scope of responsibilities around fundraising and communications, however you don’t need to have held a director level role before. Experience in a smaller charity and team is beneficial as you’ll need to be comfortable with both the strategic development side and inputting into wider planning, as well as being a leader who is willing to role up your sleeves and ‘do’.
We are particularly interested to hear from candidates who demonstrate most/all of the following attributes:
- A proven track record of personally delivering income of at least £1 million per year, including new business
- Experience in a fundraising leadership role and confidence in working alongside and advising at board level

Programme Coordination and Project Delivery
- To work closely with the Director of Strategy and Programmes to coordinate and support the delivery of all our programmes to achieve the outputs and outcomes agreed with our funders.

To empower and enable members Living with the conditions to lead healthy and happy lives through greater independence, better condition management and by creating links to the Shine community across England.
SHINE has just under 14,000 members with Spina Bifida and/or Hydrocephalus. This post will bring a real focus to the County Durham, Northumberland, Cumberland & Tyne & Wear area and will be an exciting opportunity to engage with members and develop and deliver the services we offer.
Our Little Stars project for 0–12 year olds has been established for over 3 years supporting younger members and their families with their diagnosis and beyond. We also have a growing Teen membership known as FIRE (Friendship, Independence, Resilience, Equality) Working alongside our multi skilled, established team, you will be supporting members across all age groups and building on the great foundations already in place.
Core role

To provide information to individuals, families, carers affected by Spina Bifida and/or Hydrocephalus including hard to reach communities living within your area.

To provide advice, support and guidance to enable people with Spina Bifida and/or Hydrocephalus to access the correct benefits to become financially stable, the right services to improve their health and well-being, and to better co-ordinate their support and independence through a variety of methods. This will include attending specialist clinics in the area to engage with them.

To refer individual members and/or their families/carers to the most appropriate source of expertise and support in Shine’s Health team and other designated leads within the organisation, or signpost to external agencies as appropriate.

To develop age-specific groups and peer support networks which will provide opportunities for people with Spina Bifida and/or Hydrocephalus to connect and interact, enabling social opportunities and to share experiences, support and learn from each other.

To work with and develop opportunities for Shine volunteers.

To contribute to the delivery of regional and national programme of events to Shine’s membership, based on identified need and interests, geographical location and age. These will be face to face and virtual events.

To provide information to professionals working with those individuals and families affected by Spina Bifida and/or Hydrocephalus.

To raise greater awareness of Spina Bifida and/or Hydrocephalus amongst professionals, external organisations and the general public through presentations, training and attendance at professional events.

To actively promote membership of Shine to people with the relevant conditions.

To keep clear and accurate records for monitoring and evaluation using our Salesforce database system.

To work with other service, fundraising, marketing, trust and foundations colleagues and Shine’s membership to identify and seize potential fundraising opportunities for long-term sustainability of the work.

To prepare and keep up to date a directory of relevant contacts across the area and to share relevant information with colleagues.

Main duties and responsibilities
1. Bgen Board and legal services:
a. Organise 4 Board meetings a year, prepare and circulate agendas and documents, take notes and share minutes.
b. Produce a quarterly activity report to the Bgen Board.
c. Organise the Annual General Meeting.
d. Maintain up to date records of Trustees, and ensure they have access to Governing Documents, including notification of legal obligations.
e. Submit annual returns to the Charity Commission on time and help ensure compliance.
2. Member services:
a. Act as the first point of contact for current and potential members.
b. Support the Board with planning and promotion of training events (online or in-person), booking speakers and managing bookings.
c. Advise on and help implement an effective communications programme.
d. Update the Bgen website and promote on social media as required.
e. Keep membership records up to date and manage renewals annually.
f. Organise and distribute online mail-outs and newsletters.
g. Organise the jobs and volunteer opportunities service for members.
3. Conference planning
a. Coordinate annual conference (online or in-person) with support from the Training and Conference workstream.
b. Book speakers and workshop facilitators.
c. Help promote the conference with members, partners and wider sector via newsletter and social media channels.
d. Manage bookings, participants list and send out conference pack.
e. Organise catering with venue and relevant workstream.
f. Coordinate conference logistics and event management.
4. Finance
a. Work closely with the Treasurer, Treasury group and bookkeeper in preparing financial reports.
b. Administer general accounts – invoices, receipts etc.
c. Manage conference budget.

As the organisation continues to invest in its digital estate to support organisational goals, the role of Senior Digital Project Manager will play a key role. In 2023, we launched an online information hub for our carers where they can find out about services that can support them in their journey. This currently sits separate to our main site. We are now working with Studio24 to bring these sites together, to create a unified user experience, with new website functionality. A key consideration for this development is our recent Department for Education contract to deliver high quality training to carers across England. As part of this service, we must ensure that carers can seamlessly book online or face-to-face training through our website. Additionally, they should have access to a wide range of online information and advice content. While some of this functionality exists within our current digital estate, not all of it does and there is room for improvement. Therefore, the redevelopment project aims to create a cohesive website experience with clear user journeys and new functionality.

We are seeking a candidate with a strong background in project management and UX. You will be experienced in managing complex digital projects throughout their lifecycle. You will be able to work collaboratively and have excellent communication skills to engage both internal and external stakeholders.
