- Experience of operating at a senior strategic leadership level within an organisation
- Successful track record of achievement through their career
- Experience of charity governance and working with or as part of a Board of Trustees
- Passion for supporting people facing tough life challenges
- Ideally has served as a Chair or Vice Chair and is familiar with leading a Board
What are we looking for?
You’ll need to:
- Understand the type of work undertaken by a local Citizens Advice and the Citizens Advice network
- Understand and accept the responsibilities and liabilities of a trustee
- Be non-judgmental and respect views, values and cultures that are different to your own
- Have a good basis of leadership skills (and preferably you have served within a Board, ideally as Chair or Vice Chair or led a Committee)
- Have the ability to facilitate and lead meetings
- Have good interpersonal skills
- Have good listening, verbal and written communication skills
- Be able to exercise good independent judgment
- Have good numeracy skills to understand accounts with the support of the treasurer
- Be willing to learn about and follow the Citizens Advice aims, principles and policies, including confidentiality and data protection

We want to find four new Trustees to join Hear Me Out’s Board. We’re looking for people with expertise relevant to our work, who work well with colleagues and can help make good decisions. We’re especially keen to find people who can bring us:
- Personal experience of immigration detention, asylum and immigration enforcement, and/or
- Expertise in generating gifts and earned income, especially through relationships with major partners and donors
The Trustee role is unpaid.
Our Board of Trustees
The Trustees are the group in charge of Hear Me Out. They are responsible for what we do, and are the guardians of our charitable work. Our small team of staff, led by our Director and Artistic Director, deliver the work, and the Directors report to the Trustees. All these people work together to make Hear Me Out’s aims a reality, and keep it that way.
The Board of Trustees meet 4 times a year, currently on Thursday afternoons. The meetings last 3 hours with a break in the middle. Information is sent out before the meetings about the topics to be discussed, in written papers and sometimes as audio/video. We also want Trustees to get involved in something else, perhaps a music activity or a group working on a special project, so that they bring deeper knowledge of Hear Me Out’s work into Board meetings.
Charity boards can sometimes feel quite posh and formal, with unspoken rules that confuse and exclude. But we think ours is a friendly place to be, and a good team where everyone is respected. And we’re on a journey to unpack how it works, to make sure it’s only complicated when it really needs to be. So we think being a trustee at Hear Me Out will be a good experience for people with different backgrounds and life experience – whether or not they’ve done anything like this before. We need lots of wisdom to make good decisions about our complex work in this troubling time, and that’s the way to get it.
Lived experience and professional experience
Professional experience and lived experience are of equal value on our Board. We need Trustees who understand what the people we work with are going through and what they need, and who can help make that happen. That combination will give us the strongest impact.
We want to bring more people with personal experience of detention, asylum, immigration enforcement and/or racial discrimination into leadership roles in Hear Me Out. We’ve started to do this but don’t yet have the critical mass of lived experience that will really place our organisation inside the communities we serve. If you have this kind of experience then we would really love to hear from you. You don’t need to have been a trustee before or to have a standard work CV.
We also want people’s professional experience. Fundraising and income generation are particular issues for us at present, but our work needs a range of professional skills and expertise, so there are lots of ways to contribute. So if you’re interested, tell us everything you can bring to the role.

What will you be doing?
Helping build the team – devising ways to attract talented people who bring key skills to the team
- Recruitment - vacancy promotion and administration - helping us track down people who bring key skills to strengthen our teams
- Using our Assemble platform, administer staff onboarding and offboarding processes
- Creating a positive environment and recognising volunteers for their contribution – so people want to stay involved
- Work with the HR team on surveys and addressing survey outcomes
- Optional: policy reviews in any areas of expertise
Additionally:
- Also supporting staff in relation to encouraging them to access training and shaping a positive culture within the organisation
- Helping to coordinate the work of the volunteer team – especially in relation to supporting events such as nature walks and hands-on planting or environmental improvement work
What are we looking for?
We are looking for someone with HR knowledge and, ideally, someone with recruitment experience in either being a volunteer or supporting other volunteers.
- Capacity and experience to manage the full recruitment cycle
- Previous experience of being a volunteer or supporting volunteers
- A friendly personality and an ability to relate to people from different backgrounds
- Good organisational skills and confidence in the use of online systems
- Self-starter, happy carrying out tasks independently or as part of a team
- Good written and verbal communication skills
- Access to a computer and the internet at home and be confident using them
- Be able to commit to volunteering regularly to suit your availability with occasional attendance at meetings
- An interest in the countryside and environmental issues
Availability:
A six-month plus or long term commitment is preferable.
7-10 hours per week, flexible, hybrid work pattern, but office attendance some Thursdays very useful.

We are currently looking for a voluntary In-Patient Services Officer to help our organisation support the children and their families on the wards of our hospitals by distributing/providing resources/services to improve the quality of their stay in our hospitals.
Of Note: This role entails interacting and seeing children who can be very sick. This is understandably very sad and can be distressing to witness. Please make sure you are able to cope with this before applying.
We would like the volunteer to help with:

Distribution of resources to patients and families on the ward e.g care packages and food vouchers.

Being a point of contact for families in hospital to talk to.

Supporting in-hospital socials.

The tea and coffee service we deliver on the wards.

Communicating with families who may share personal stories related to the charity. Feeling comfortable and confident to speak to people about our charity and what we do.
You will be supporting our Community Lead and Children and Families Service Lead who will provide an overview of our existing processes and be there to help you every step of the way. The Brompton Fountain has a strong team of staff and volunteers who you will be working collaboratively with as a team to support the families we are in contact with.
Your input will greatly affect the patients and their families lives whilst they are staying with us. With your help we will be able to provide them with the resources they need whilst staying with us and create a strong support system for them here in the hospitals.
Criteria
We are looking for a volunteer who has:

Is an empathetic and compassionate person who is willing to have discussions with families around topics like health issues, additional needs, and bereavement.

Confident and proactive.

Flexible and adaptive.

Understands the resource constraints of a small charity and is able to work with these.

Is willing to have an enhanced DBS check.

Is willing to partake in onboarding training to understand our charity and the mission in more detail.

Location
Mostly on-site at Royal Brompton Hospital, Sydney St, London SW3 6NP. If willing and able, off-site support at community and fundraising events would be appreciated.
Time
Due to our mission, we would greatly appreciate at least 6 weeks of your time, preferably more; working 3-7 hours one day a week. We are an understanding and flexible organisation, and would be happy to discuss options with you.

We are looking for friendly, enthusiastic and energetic volunteers to walk our Wellness Walk routes with our participants to be someone that walkers can chat to if they’ve arrived and walking alone, provide a morale boost and support.
As the UK’s leading diabetes charity, it’s our job to tackle the diabetes crisis. We’re here to prevent type 2 diabetes, campaign for and support everyone affected by diabetes, and fund research that will one day lead us to a cure.
Thousands of people from across the UK will take part in our fun and family-friendly, sponsored Wellness Walks. It’s a chance to get out outside, take a deep breath, seize the day and change the world for everyone affected by diabetes.
There are currently 3 Wellness Walks held across the UK. We ask our walkers to think about their wellbeing and make a few small changes to how they live their lives, so that they can begin to feel healthier.
The walks are between 8-10 miles and are fully accessible – so pushchairs and mobility scooters are welcome.
Route volunteers guide walkers accurately and keep enthusiasm high. You must be aged 16+ to volunteer for this role (16 - 17 year olds must with be with a parent or guardian aged 18+), Volunteers in these roles will be positioned at key points on the walk route and will:
- Ensure walkers are heading in the right direction
- Motivate and cheer people on as they walk past your position
- Hand out hypo snacks, plasters or report medical incidents
- Monitor and report back to the route manager

About the CARAS ESOL Team:
Our award-winning ESOL project offers English language classes to adults at a wide range of levels. This provides vital skills, opportunities and social contact and is crucial for enabling people to attend college and access other services in the future.
About the Role:
CARAS is looking for volunteer ESOL Teaching Assistants to support our face-to-face adult ESOL classes in Tooting. Volunteers in this role are required to commit to at least one 2-hour session every Wednesday during these times:

Mondays ESOL 9:30 to 13:30

Tuesday 9:30 to 11:30
-
Tuesday One-to-one employability and language learning support 15:00 to 17:00
Please note that ESOL classes do not run during school holidays, and we follow Wandsworth Council term dates.
Volunteer tasks and responsibilities:

Providing learners with one-to-one or small group support within ESOL classes;

Helping to set up the classroom and provide learners with classroom resources;

Attending and contributing to volunteer debriefs after each session;
-
Making use of any community languages you may know to help students during the class;
-
Working collaboratively as a team and helping to shape the project;

Supporting people to develop their knowledge and skills, encouraging and inspiring participants to reach their full potential;

Assisting participants to recognise and celebrate their achievements;

Requirements:
Essential:

To be 18 years or older;

Able to travel to our community centre in Tooting (travel expenses can be reimbursed);

An interest in education and English language teaching;

To be non-judgemental and able to engage with people from diverse backgrounds;

To be reliable and punctual;

Excellent communication skills, especially with people who are new to English;

The ability to volunteer on Mondays or Wednesdays during Wandsworth term time for a minimum of three months;

Currently resident in the UK; has asylum-seeker or refugee status

*Able to provide five years’ worth of addresses, and willing to undergo a DBS check;

Able to attend volunteer induction training (online) prior to start of role.
*DBS and proof of residency is not necessary if you are a CARAS community member who is more recently arrived in the UK.
Desirable:

Knowledge of community languages, such as Arabic, Tigrinya, Amharic, Pashto, Dari, Farsi, Kurdish, Somali or Spanish.

Main responsibilities
