About Spires

Spires is an award-winning charity that has been working with homeless and disadvantaged people in Streatham, South London, since 1990.  Working with some of the most isolated and vulnerable in our society, we support over 900 men and women every year.

Our vision and aim is to be the best support that we can in helping people move from lives of distress, isolation and insecurity to a future of greater stability and hope. The majority of our clients are homeless or have insecure accommodation, with many also facing complex issues such as long-term unemployment, problems with poor mental and physical health, addiction and substance abuse, or they may even be imprisoned by sex work.

What will you be doing?

Trustees at Spires are responsible for overseeing the charity’s strategic direction and ensuring its long-term sustainability. Key responsibilities include:

• Strategic oversight: Help shape and support Spires’ evolving strategy
• Legal and regulatory compliance: Ensure adherence to governing documents, charity law, and relevant regulations
• Financial oversight: Together as a board, approve annual budgets, monitor financial performance, and support the Treasurer in maintaining financial health
• Resource management: Ensure that the charity’s resources are used effectively to meet its mission
• Support and challenge: Engage actively in board meetings, offering advice, support, and constructive challenge
• Ambassadorship: Promote Spires within your networks, helping raise its profile and attract support for its mission
• Uphold best practices: Ensure high standards of governance, transparency, and accountability throughout the organisation

This role is mainly home-based

The board meets six times a year, with an estimated time commitment of around 4 hours per month.

We welcome applicants from all backgrounds but are particularly interested in those with experience in marketing, social media, fundraising, finance, governance, or legal compliance. Additionally, lived experience of homelessness or related challenges is highly valued, as we strive to ensure our board reflects the community we serve.

No prior trustee experience is required - just a willingness to contribute time, expertise, and fresh perspectives.

Timewise, the commitment includes four board meetings a year, plus roughly 10 hours a month for things like preparing for meetings, joining a subgroup, or visiting a project. The bigger roles like finance and governance leads will need a bit more time, so may suit someone not in full-time work.

 At Acorns we provide care and support for life limited or life threatened children and their families. We are a charity, and our fundraising is vital to enable us to continue providing care and support to the children: it costs around £13 million a year to run our care services. 

We are looking for volunteers to join our fundraising team at Morrisons (Evesham) on Thursday 17th July  and make a difference. We’re looking for enthusiastic volunteers to help us collect donations from shoppers, supporting our cause in a rewarding environment. 

 How much time will it take?  

The collection is from 10.00am – 3.00pm, but you can join us at any point for an hour or two.

At Acorns we provide care and support for life limited or life threatened children and their families. We are a charity, so most of the care that we provide is funded through fundraising and through our shops.

We are looking for volunteers to join our Christmas Fayre in Wylde Green Church to help with the sales of craft items and running of the tombola.

Event date Saturday 29th November.

Roles and responsibilities

1. Researching Prospects

• Finding suitable new Trusts and Foundations prospects. You’ll have access to a workbook, fundraising database and grants bulletin to trawl through.
• Reviewing Trust and Foundation Accounts. You’ll undertake research using online platforms, such as the Charity Commission website.
• Assessing whether prospects are a suitable fit.

2. Administrative support

• Updating our fundraising database and Excel workbook, as you progress. This will involve deciding whether the fundraising team should make an application for each prospect.
• Supporting with fundraising related tasks, on an ad hoc basis, as is required within the Trusts and Foundations team.

Skills and qualities

Essential

• Strong IT proficiency. You will be confident in using Microsoft Office, especially Excel. With a willingness to learn about our fundraising database.
• A methodical and orderly approach. You will be comfortable with online research and working through a workbook of contacts.
• Good verbal and written communication skills. You will have the ability to clearly and concisely summarise information from readily available sources.
• Analytical skills. You will be comfortable with independently conducting research and will be happy with conducting desk-based research.
• Administrative skills. You will be organised and methodical

Desirable

• Experience of conducting research.
• Understanding and interest in the charity or not-for-profit sector
• Past fundraising volunteer experience

Trustee with Fundraising Experience 

About NWR 

NWR (National Women’s Register) is a membership charity aiming to stop social isolation in women.  It was founded in 1960 by Maureen Nicol in response to a letter in the Guardian bemoaning how women became isolated when they gave up their careers to raise their children.  Maureen set up NWR as an alternative to WI, with the aim of meetings focusing on non-domestic, stimulating topics.  60 years later NWR is still connecting women, albeit an older generation of +55 years, with 315 local groups and a thriving online community.

Trustee Role 

Our current Board of Trustees are all members of NWR, and we are seeking a voluntary, external Trustee to bring a different dimension to the Board.

We are looking for someone experienced in working in the charity sector, in particular a membership organisation, and who is committed to our objectives. In addition, our ideal Trustee is someone with successful skills and experience of working in a fundraising role, who could advise us on accessing and applying for grants. 

The board holds quarterly Trustee meetings that last approx. 3-4 hours. These are usually on Zoom, but we try to meet face-to-face once a year. Additionally, our Head of Operations & Development is seeking some ad hoc fundraising and bid writing mentorship.

Your Role

• Help ROLDA UK build a local presence within your community by networking and growing local volunteers who are interested in animal welfare and ask them to join you.
