We're looking for someone with experience of verging or similar church support work to provide Maternity Cover for up to 12 months. Starting in December 2026 the successful applicant will be involved with major services and events marking the Centenary of both the Cathedral and Diocese of Portsmouth.
Good social skills are essential as is the ability to work as part of a team as well as on your own inititiave. The ability to work closely with and relate well to all Cathedral staff, ministry team, congregation, volunteers, visitors, and members of the general public will also be required.
The two Assistant Vergers and Precinct Officers (AVPOs) carry out a wide range of duties under the direction of the Head Verger and Precinct Manager. Work includes: the careful setting up and delivery of all liturgical matters; ensuring a welcoming, clean, and safe environment for all working in, visiting, or using the Cathedral and Cathedral House and precinct and ensuring the day-to-day smooth running of the Cathedral for all.
Essential experience and skills
- Sympathy with the Christian faith.
- At least one year’s experience as a church or cathedral verger or in a similar role.
- A flexible attitude and willingness to take on a range of duties including practical ‘hands- on’ work.
- Attention to detail and an ability to assess priorities including when under pressure.
- Understanding of liturgy or willingness to learn.
- Ability to be a good team player and work collaboratively with Ministry Team, staff and volunteers.
- Willing to work alone.
- Good administrative and IT skills.
- Good understanding of the importance of security, maintenance and health and safety.
- Good social and communication skills.
- Have an open and welcoming attitude to all including volunteers and members of the general public.
- A trained First Aider (or willing to be trained upon appointment to an appropriate level).·
- Ability to work flexibly over seven days and evenings including holiday periods.
Desirable experience
- A communicant member of the Church of England.
- Previous experience in a liturgical capacity.
- Experience of working in an environment where paid and voluntary staff work side by side.
- Experience of delivering events.
- Experience of caretaking duties.

- Excellent interpersonal skills, in particular warmth, tact, diplomacy, discretion, and imagination.
- In sympathy with the ethos and aims of the Cathedral as a Christian organisation.
- Highly collaborative.
- Ability to lift and carry furniture, climb stairs, walk, and stand unaided for significant periods of time and work at height.
- Ability to work with senior level colleagues and with the general public.

As a Store Manager you will manage the day to day running of our Greenhaw Road Community Store, leading a team of colleagues to maximise store sales and profits. By doing so you will play a crucial role in raising the funds for the amazing services and support Barnardo's provides for children, young people, parents, and carers across the UK.
Location: The successful post holder will be based at Unit 5, Greenhaw Road, Derry/Londonderry, BT48 7RZ.
Working Pattern: 35 hours per week.
Salary: £25,480 per annum plus £500 hot spot allowance
Please note the role will include moving high volumes of stock on a daily basis.
Some but not all key responsibilities include:
- Ensuring stock is generated over the door by members of the public and donors sign up to the Gift Aid scheme.
- Ensure that the high standard of service to customers that is expected by Barnardo's is maintained at all times.
- Implement promotions in the Store as directed by Head Office or your Area Business Manager.
- Maintain a high standard of presentation, both in the windows and the interior of the Store.
- Ensure there is adequate stock available on the shop floor, at all times, on all key lines.
- Provide training, development, work reviews and appraisals for paid staff to enable them to perform their jobs efficiently and effectively.
- Create an organised and pleasant working environment for staff and volunteers.
- Actively recruit the correct/specified number volunteers to deliver the stores objectives and KPI's.
- Ensure all financial, cash handling and security procedures are adhered to as per the Barnardo's Manager's Manual and the relevant Retail procedures.
- Hold the shop keys, ensuring that the shop is secure whenever it is left unattended.
Idea Candidates Must Haves:
- Demonstratable experience of working in a fashion industry.
- Experience of managing a team in a customer service environment.
- Evidence of recruiting, training and developing a team.
- Ability to liaise and respond to a variety of people from varying backgrounds.
- Ability to meet the needs of customers on a face-to-face basis, in order to generate sales and increase customer usage of the shop.
- Evidence of experience of working to budgets and targets.
- Proven experience of meeting targets and KPI's.
- Evidence of working with Health & Safety requirements and company policies and procedures
- Experience of working with IT systems, admin and figures.
- Flexible approach to working hours and days including working Saturdays, Sundays and Bank Holidays as appropriate and when required. Also assisting in area team, including cover at other Stores, if necessary.
