National Clinical Lead (Nursing) – Volunteer Role

SEAS Sailability & All Afloat – Merging for Greater Impact

About SEAS All Afloat

SEAS Sailability and All Afloat, two well-established charities operating across Wales since 2017, are merging to combine their experience, resources, and passion for inclusion on the water.

SEAS Sailability has built a successful partnership with a commercial activity provider, delivering weekly evening sessions and monthly weekend activities during the spring and summer months for disabled people, their families, and carers. Over the past five years, SEAS Sailability has secured approximately £200,000 in grants and donations to support this work.

All Afloat has focused on breaking down barriers to water sports and expanding access to sailing and boating for disadvantaged young people and those with disabilities. The charity has supported ten RYA Training Centres across Wales, delivering more than £150,000 worth of projects, providing over 4,500 sessions for more than 3,500 young participants, opening clear pathways to RYA qualifications from introductory sailing through to Dinghy Instructor certification.

As the new merged organisation, SEAS All Afloat will build on this strong foundation to secure sustainable funding that maintains current activity while enabling the growth of similar partnerships across Wales. Our ambition is to use our combined experience, equipment, and networks to expand opportunities for people of all ages and backgrounds to enjoy the water safely and inclusively.

Through community projects and activity clubs, we will continue to deliver safe, engaging, and inclusive on-water experiences that build confidence, develop skills, and foster wellbeing — particularly for those facing barriers to participation.

The Role of the Chair of Trustees

Our volunteers and trustees play a vital role in steering the charity and ensuring we deliver on our mission.

The Chair of Trustees provides leadership to the Board, ensuring effective governance and strategic oversight. Working collaboratively with trustees, volunteers, and partners, the Chair helps set the vision and direction of the charity and acts as a key ambassador.

The Chair ensures that the Board operates effectively, decisions are well-informed, and the charity remains compliant with all legal and regulatory requirements. They also represent SEAS All Afloat publicly, championing its values and strengthening its relationships with stakeholders.

About You

We are looking for someone with:

• A passion for making outdoor activities accessible for all.
• Strong leadership and governance experience (charity, corporate, or public sector).
• Excellent communication and people skills, with the ability to build consensus.
• Confidence in representing the charity externally and acting as a spokesperson.
• A collaborative and inclusive approach.

Experience in sport, youth development, disability inclusion, or fundraising would be an advantage, but is not essential.

Who we are

City of Wolverhampton College currently operates from two main campuses in Wolverhampton – Paget Road and Wellington Road – and delivers over 300 different qualifications through a range of full-time and part-time courses, including apprenticeships and HE. We also have specialist provisions for polymer training, rail, and electric vehicle maintenance, delivered from satellite sites at Telford, Dudley, and Bentley Bridge (Wolverhampton).  Each year, we deliver education and training to around 9,000 students.

As an education provider, the College is subject to periodic inspection by Ofsted.  The most recent inspection took place in January 2023, and the College was rated ‘Good’ overall, demonstrating the high level of quality that we deliver across the College. This is further demonstrated by our consistently high achievement rates, our growth in our student recruitment numbers and the high levels of satisfaction that both our students and our staff report.

Over recent times, we have been progressing with an exciting estate transformation project, which has already seen us extend our Wellington Road campus to include new training workshops and classrooms as part of our Construction Innovation Centre. Furthermore, in November, we will take the next step on this journey by vacating our Paget Road site and moving into a new state-of-the-art campus – the City Learner Quarter.

These estate developments are just one example of how we continue to evolve and develop our provision, ensuring that the education and training we deliver are of the highest quality whilst led by the needs of our local community, employers and stakeholders such as the West Midlands Combined Authority.

From a strategic perspective, our new strategic plan will be published soon and has been created in collaboration between our Governors and our Senior Leadership Team, led by our Principal & Chief Executive, Louise Fall, who was appointed just over a year ago.

Once this plan is published, attention will turn from development to delivery, and to do this, Louise and her colleagues across the college will be able to call upon the board for their support. Having considered the current skills composition on our Board, we believe there are several areas of expertise which would add considerable value to our Board. These are:

• Qualified finance professionals
• Professionals working in senior compliance, risk and audit-focused roles
• Those working in leadership roles within local employers and the wider business community, ideally leading business operations of an organisation which complements the curriculum strategy of the college.

Prior experience as a member of a non-executive board is not essential, but it will, of course, be welcomed, especially where this experience relates to time served on an audit or finance committee within a complex business or not-for-profit environment.

The role requires commitment and active participation. Our Governors meet five times per year in person on Thursdays from 5 pm, with additional committee and strategy sessions across the year. Fundraising Trustee- One Role

You will have the opportunity to use your fundraising skills and experience to support us in building fundraising plans and strategy, and to educate other trustees about this area. Your expertise in fundraising and communications will help us open up new funding streams and opportunities for growth, helping us to have an even greater impact on the lives of Londoners struggling with mental health difficulties and trauma.

We are looking for someone with skills and experience in charity fundraising or communications, including areas such as Trusts and Foundation funding, the National Lottery, community/corporate fundraising and individual giving. Ideally we are looking for someone with understanding of the fundraising challenges facing smaller charities.

Duties of a fundraising trustee:

As a Director, on the Board of Directors, you will work in partnership with the CEO, to set the strategic direction of the Trust, challenge Senior leaders and to take the Trust forward as an excellent example for the type of alternative provision that it offers.

Being a Director is a commitment to attending Board and Committee meetings that consider issues such as setting the Trust’s vision, mitigating financial risk and scrutinising educational outcomes, as well as overseeing the management side of the Trust.

Through oversight and strategic direction, the board will ensure that the Trust:

• Complies with governance documentation and relevant legislation
• Apply the resources solely towards pursing our purpose
• Have financial stability and sustainability
• Have effective  policies and procedures in place
• Evaluation performance against agreed goals

What are we looking for?

No previous experience is required and we welcome application from young and old alike from people with all kinds of backgrounds.

Our Directors must be:

• Willing and able to champion our Vision and Values
• Collaborative and open to new ideas
• Able to listen, express views constructively and be fair and objective.
• Reliable, ethical and honest
• Willing and able to contribute to the work of the Board
• Willing to undertake an enhanced DBS check

We are particularly seeking applicants with one or more of the following:

• Experience of the education sector and/or further education
• An understanding of Special Educational Needs and Disabilities
• Advanced financial/ accounting  skills
• An understanding of adolescence mental health

The Directors have the overall management of the Trust and provide support, ideas and constructive challenge to the CEO and Executive Leadership team. We are looking for Trustees with expertise in HR and Talent Management and in Finance to join our Board. Our immediate priority is appointing a Trustee with strong HR and people leadership experience, with an additional vacancy for a Trustee bringing financial expertise. Both roles will contribute innovative thinking, strategic challenge, and support to help drive LSU’s continued success.

What are Serving Community Teams? 

Volunteers are the lifeblood of SSAFA. SSAFA has developed Serving Community Teams for volunteers to support serving personnel and their families in the UK and overseas. 

A Serving Community Team is run by a small team of volunteers on or near a British Armed Forces base which provides emotional, practical and financial support to the serving community. Our Chair is the key part of the team, coordinating the activities of volunteers to ensure financial stability and a safe and effective volunteer service. You will network locally to build relationships with the serving community, other stakeholders and welfare organisations. You will collaborate with the other SCT volunteers to support them in their roles as well as working with employees in the Serving Community Support Team to ensure the functions of the SCT run well, are documented appropriately, and reported on annually. 

Why we want you

Serving Community Teams (SCTs) offer financial, practical and emotional support to serving personnel and their families at military bases both in the UK and overseas. Each SCT consists of a group of dedicated volunteers, working together to raise SSAFA’s profile, ensuring those who need support receive it. If you would like to lead and develop a SCT, we’d love to hear from you. Our SCT Chair is the key player, coordinating the activities of the volunteer team to deliver beneficiary support and ensure a safe, effective and financially stability SCT. You will network locally to build relationships with the serving community, other stakeholders and welfare organisations. You will support your SCT volunteers in their roles as well as working with employees in SSAFA’s Serving Community Support Team to ensure the functions of the SCT are run well, documented and reported on annually.

What you will be doing

• Leading the volunteer team, ensuring SSAFA’s values, policies and procedures are followed.
• Being an ambassador for SSAFA, building positive relationships with the chain of command, local SSAFA branches and services, welfare services and other key stakeholders.
• Working closely with your volunteers to establish an annual plan of activities to include fundraising, awareness raising and support.
• Having oversight of all the functions of the SCT, ensuring beneficiaries receive effective support, and volunteers have an opportunity to regularly meet regularly.
• Reporting on the activities the SCT undertakes and their impact, ensuring annual reports are submitted.
• Promoting the work of SSAFA and the SCT, highlighting case studies and good news stories to employees in the SSAFA PR team and Serving Community Support Team.
• Being available to consider any grant applications when received.
• Working closely with employees in the Serving Community Support Team, building on volunteer recruitment and and sharing best practice.

The skills you need

• Friendly and approachable with effective IT and communication skills.
• Empathy and understanding of the challenges that the serving community can face.
• Experience of successfully leading a team.
• Understanding of the importance of boundaries and confidentiality.
• Skilled at reporting on activities, achievements and impact and an understanding of the importance of volunteers and employees working together.
• Non-judgemental approach when working with beneficiaries.
• A willingness to adhere to all relevant organisational policies and procedures.

Requirements 

Volunteers need to be a minimum of 18 years old.

Time commitment 

This role would suit someone who would like to volunteer a few hours each week. SSAFA’s Serving Community Support Team are always available should you wish to discuss this further.

Support 

Full training is provided for this role, with some e-learning modules online. You will be supported by SSAFA’s Serving Community Team Manager and Serving Community Support Team.
