The Chatham Historic Dockyard Trust (the Trust) is looking to appoint a new Chair to join its high-performing Board of Trustees.
The new Chair will be an individual of standing, with a background that complements the activity of the Trust. The Chair must have a deeply held appreciation of the importance of The Historic Dockyard Chatham, its historical significance and the critical role it plays in inspiring audiences young and old, local, national and international.
The Trust is looking for a strategic leader to chair our vibrant Board and to act as a powerful advocate for our work.
As Chair, you will provide an inclusive approach to the governance of the charity and help us to advance our charitable purpose, truly delivering our twin charitable objectives of Preservation and Learning. You will optimise the relationship between the Board and staff and, as a Board, ensure we are focused on fulfilling our strategic role.
It is essential that the Chair has experience of excellent governance, strategic leadership, sound business credentials and ideally either a Naval background or keen interest in at least one area of the cultural, heritage or education sectors. A natural ambassador, you will promote and represent our interests externally, acting as a spokesperson where appropriate.
Our current Chair, Admiral Sir Trevor Soar, following a highly successful tenure as Chairman since 2016, will be stepping down as a Trustee in November 2026 after completing the maximum of three terms at the Trust.
The current trustee group is highly skilled, dedicated and committed to the work of the Trust. Having established a new ten-year strategy, you will be tasked to support the CEO in ensuring its delivery.

Chair of Trustees
As Chair, you will provide inspirational leadership and clear direction to the Board, ensuring effective governance, long-term sustainability, and strategic excellence across all that we do. You will play a pivotal role in supporting and constructively challenging our CEO and senior leadership team to deliver lasting social impact and drive performance across the organisation.

As Chair, you will:

Chair of the Resources Committee
The Chair of the Resources Committee leads on financial stewardship, ensuring the Charity’s funds and resources are managed responsibly, transparently, and in line with our charitable objectives and legal obligations. The Committee oversees finance, investments, HR, IT, and other resource-related areas.
As Committee Chair, you will:
- Lead the Resources Committee, ensuring meetings are well-organised, effective, and aligned with the Charity’s governance framework.
- Provide strategic guidance and oversight on finance, staffing, and resource allocation.
- Advise the Board on the financial implications of major decisions and long-term plans.
- Lead the annual budget review and monitor performance against financial plans and reserves policies.
- Ensure robust management of investments, reserves, and overall financial sustainability.
- Work collaboratively with the Chief Executive and senior team to support effective resource planning.
- Liaise with the Chair of the Risk and Audit Committee to strengthen financial controls and risk management.
- Support the preparation and presentation of annual accounts, ensuring clarity and transparency.
- Keep the Board informed of its financial duties and promote openness in public reporting.
Safeguarding Trustee
The Safeguarding Trustee works closely with the CEO and Designated Safeguarding Leads to provide assurance to the Board that safeguarding remains a strategic priority across the Charity. They ensure our safeguarding framework is robust, effective, and fully compliant with legal, regulatory, and sector expectations.
As Safeguarding Trustee, you will:
- Provide assurance to the Board on the effectiveness of safeguarding practices and compliance with statutory requirements.
- Offer guidance and expertise in developing and monitoring the Charity’s safeguarding, child protection, and Prevent strategies, policies, and action plans.
- Ensure safeguarding considerations are embedded in all strategic decisions and risk management processes.
- Champion a strong, transparent, and inclusive safeguarding culture aligned with our Equality, Diversity and Inclusion commitments.
- Ensure arrangements meet legislative and regulatory expectations, including Ofsted and statutory guidance such as Keeping Children Safe in Education.
- Work with trustees and senior staff to embed safeguarding across all learning environments and youth-focused provision.
- Monitor the implementation of safeguarding and Prevent action plans, escalating risks or concerns to the Board where necessary.
- Provide assurance that safeguarding concerns are reported, escalated, and addressed appropriately, with clear routes for staff, learners, and the public to raise issues.
- Represent Central YMCA’s safeguarding commitment externally, promoting best practice with partners, funders, and sector bodies.
- Attend Board meetings, relevant sub-committees, and safeguarding briefings, maintaining up-to-date knowledge of safeguarding and Prevent developments.
- Support transparency by promoting public visibility of safeguarding arrangements, including statements and reporting routes.

We are seeking a Chair who:

Chair of Resources Committee
The ideal candidate will bring:
- A recognised financial qualification (e.g. ACA, ACCA, CIMA) or substantial senior financial management experience.
- A strong understanding of education and charity finance, SORP, and relevant regulatory requirements.
- Excellent analytical and evaluation skills, with the ability to exercise good judgement and interpret complex information.
- The ability to chair meetings effectively, foster collaboration, and build consensus.
- A solid understanding of governance principles, business models, finance, funding, and charity regulation compliance.
- The interpersonal skills to work effectively with people from diverse backgrounds, experiences, and perspectives.
Safeguarding Trustee
The ideal candidate will bring:
- Experience of overseeing safeguarding arrangements in an education or youth care setting (including children’s social services or local authority), with direct experience managing safeguarding issues affecting young people aged 14+.
- Strong working knowledge of government safeguarding, Prevent, and child protection strategies, as well as safer recruitment practices.
- Familiarity with Charity Commission guidance on safeguarding and governance expectations for trustees.
- Commitment to promoting and supporting equality, diversity, and inclusion across all areas of the Charity’s work.
- Experience of working at a senior level in post-16 or vocational education, or within a local authority involved in education policy or strategy.

What difference will you make?
Trustees have independent control and legal responsibility for the charity’s management and administration. They support the strategic development and success of SLSW through ensuring good strategic planning, effective governance and the monitoring of the performance of the organisation.As a trustee, you will work alongside the chair, vice chair and other trustees to bring good governance and strategic oversight. You will share responsibility with other trustees and the Leadership Team for the success of the organisation.Our service supports adults over 18 years of age and occasionally young people in transition into adult services from the age of 16 upwards. We currently support around 300 people on a long-term basis in around 270 shared lives homes and have up to a further 140 people using our short break services.We provide support to people with learning disabilities, people who have a diagnosis of dementia, a physical or sensory disability, mental ill health and parents who have a learning disability with their child.We currently have five contracts from local authorities across Cornwall, Devon and Somerset to support our work and a range of project funding totalling around £1.8 million per annum.

What will you be doing?
Governing bodies are responsible for the strategic management of a school and will make decisions about a wide range of issues
The core responsibilities involved are:

The governing body is usually split in to a small number of committees, each responsible for one area such as finance or pupil achievement. These committees will meet separately from the main governing body to discuss relevant issues in more detail. Discussion is then fed back at a full governing body meeting.
A school governing body is made up of representatives from the school, the parents, the local authority and the local community.
What are we looking for?
You don’t need any specific skills or experience to be a school governor. You must be over 18, but you don’t need to be a parent or have experience working in education. Often, it’s the outside perspective you can bring that a school needs.
Professional experience in areas such as HR, finance, law, or project management are all useful to a school. But soft skills such as leadership, communication, and problem solving are also great additions.
What difference will you make?
Governors make decisions that affect schools for years to come. Our recent impact survey found that our volunteers bring £9.9 million worth of value to schools each year, and 9/10 volunteers would recommend being a governor to a friend.
As a governor, you can visit the school to gain an understanding of the culture and ethos and to get the most out of the role. You’ll also have the opportunity to meet children, parents, and teachers, and see the impact of your work first-hand.

What will you be doing?
This role involves leading on Human Resources (HR) within the organisation, ensuring the highest standards of governance in policies and practice related to employee relations, recruitment, retention, reward, recognition and staff/trustee development.
It is the HR trustee’s responsibility to assess risks and measure the impact of HR interventions, implement organisational policies and practices in the context of furthering charitable objectives and evaluating how they impact beneficiaries and staff. The HR trustee needs to ensure the long-term strategic oversight of the organisation’s staffing requirements in relation to the goals of the charity.
HR Lead Responsibilities:
- To review and recommend current and future strategic resourcing, training and development and annual budgets and plans to the Trustee Board
- To actively contribute to policy setting, strategic direction, goal and target setting, and evaluate performance against targets, budgets, plans and charitable objectives
- To ensure that HR activities and interventions are linked to the organisation’s charitable objectives and complement the organisational culture
- To ensure the Trustee Board monitors and reviews the performance of the charity’s Chief Executive, rewards performance accordingly and identifies development opportunities
- To monitor whether the service complies with its governing document and standards and if the needs of the beneficiaries are being met
Other responsibilities, along with the Board of Trustees, include:
- To ensure the Trustee Board develops a long-term strategy for the food bank with clear objectives which can be monitored and adapted
- To work alongside the Treasurer and the Trustee Board to ensure the organisation’s financial dealings are systematically accounted for and on time, independently examined (on income over £25k) and made publicly available when necessary
- Ensure your charity is accountable, actively complying with statutory accounting and reporting requirements and the law
- To ensure appropriate financial plans are in place for future budget allocations as well as looking after contractual agreements with external partners that award money for core costs and additional projects
- To help promote the organisation to a wider audience of potential funders and beneficiaries
- To ensure the food bank has appropriate procedures to: comply with current legislation and good practice; including employment, health and safety, equal opportunities, safeguarding & GDPR compliance/data protection etc.
- Act with reasonable care and skill, giving your time, thought and energy to your role
- To serve as an additional promoter of the food bank in the community

Our trustees work with the CEO to ensure strong governance and help realise the strategic aims of this unique and growing charity. Since its formation in 2007, VfL has earned widespread respect for its advocacy, training, and resources that support dignity and choice in later life.
In line with our new Vision for 2030, we are looking to strengthen our board with a new trustee who brings experience of business development, marketing and income generation gained (most likely) from the Private Sector. We are particularly interested in individuals with proven experience in:
- Growing a business in an ethical and sustainable way
- Generating income from new streams and commercial partnerships
- Developing and marketing new products and services
You’ll work alongside a committed board and leadership team as we seek to build VfL’s long-term sustainability by enhancing our earned income to complement support from our strong reserves.
Experience of charity governance is welcomed but not essential. More important is a strategic mindset, commercial insight, and a strong commitment to VfL’s mission.
The role of trustee is a voluntary one, with expenses paid when incurred in connection with the role. The board meets quarterly, mainly via video conferencing, with at least one in-person meeting annually in Manchester. Meetings are held on Saturdays, with additional (short) discussions scheduled by arrangement when needed.

Wicksteed Park opened in 1921, making it the oldest theme park on UK mainland. Its founder, Charles Wicksteed purchased the land in 1913. His initial goal was to create a model village for the local community, however following World War One and housing reforms, Charles looked to develop a park for people to spend their leisure time. He set up a charitable trust in 1916 and went on to build a number of prefabricated houses – some of which still exist and are within the park grounds.
A century ago, Charles Wicksteed put into practice his deep-held belief that all children, no matter how rich or poor, should have somewhere safe and fun to play outdoors. Public parks in Charles’ own youth had been very formal places where you walked sedately along the paths, keeping off the grass. He was determined to provide something different and here at Wicksteed he did just that, using his engineering skills to provide a new and exciting element to public open spaces.
Swings, slides and roundabouts, parks and playgrounds are the background to many of our freest and most joyful childhood memories. They are something that we all share, generations of us, from all over Britain, but this is where it all started. Wicksteed Park is truly somewhere amazing and very special.
It is good to see this story of Kettering’s contribution to our nation’s health and happiness and to remember that Wicksteed is a place with an incredible heritage and an exciting future. Role
Trustees are responsible for making sure the charity stays true to its mission and vision. Being a Trustee of an historic, community-based charity, means making decisions that will impact on the communities we serve across in Kettering and the wider county, enriching lives and providing a focus for community activity.
Trustees, led by a Chair, have independent control over, and legal responsibility for, the charity’s management and administration. They act as the ultimate decision makers of the organisation, protecting the interests of the members and the public. They agree the strategy and hold the executives to account for the management of the organisation.
Responsibilities
Governance
· Understand the charity’s purposes as set out in its governing document and ensure compliance to law and other relevant regulations.
· Ensure the charity has a clear vision, mission and strategic direction and is focused on achieving these in partnership with other Trustees.
· Ensure the sustainability of the charity and sound risk management.
· Oversee what the charity does and what it needs to achieve.
· Be responsible for the performance of the charity and for its 'corporate' behaviour.
· Act as a guardian of the charity's assets, both tangible and intangible, taking all due care over their security, deployment, and proper application.
· Ensure the charity's governance is of the highest possible standard.
Leadership
· Contribute to the development of the charity‘s long term strategy.

Financial Management
· Ensure the charity’s assets are only used to support or carry out its purposes.

In addition to the above duties, each Trustee should use any specific skills, knowledge or experience they have to help the Board of Trustees reach sound decisions. Length of appointment
Our Trustees are appointed for an initial three-year term, and can be re-appointed for up to two more three-year terms (there is a maximum of nine years’ continuous service).
Time commitment
The estimated Trustee time commitment is a minimum of 6 half day full trust meetings each year (held every other month), plus reading and preparation time. Board meetings will be held at Wicksteed Park in Kettering. Additional commitment to any sub-committee or ad-hoc duties may be reasonably required. Sub-Committee meetings may be held online and it is expected these will be held quarterly.
Remuneration
The Trustee appointment is voluntary but reasonable expenses will be reimbursed in line with the expenses policy.

What will you be doing?
