Job description

Position: Girl Activist Programme Officer

Location: London, U.K. or Washington, D.C.

Status: Full time, permanent

Reports to:  The Girl Activist Programme Manager

Salary range: £37,900 - £40,200 GBP | $56,700 - $60,100 USD

I. Position Summary

The Girl Activist Programme Officer is responsible for supporting the Programme Manager in the strategic management and implementation of new, Malala Fund girl-centered programming, which launched in 2020. The Girl Activist Programme includes three separate workstreams: 1) a Fellowship for young women; 2) grant-funding and activities focused on amplifying the voices of girls through national and international advocacy; and 3) digital data collection to incorporate the voices of girls in all decision-making and policy recommendations. The Programme is currently active in Brazil, Ethiopia, India, Nigeria and Pakistan with plans to launch in Bangladesh and Tanzania in the next two years.

The Officer will support the Programme Manager in the implementation of all three workstreams; including supporting implementation and expansion of our Fellowship programme, the delivery of an ambitious grant-making portfolio and implementation of activities to amplify the voices and experiences of girls and young women across Malala Fund programmes. The Programme Officer is an integral member of the Programmes Department and also liaises regularly across other Malala Fund departments.

II. Responsibilities

The Girl Activist Programme Officer will support the day-to-day management of the Girl Activist Programme (GAP), coordinating with staff across the organisation, particularly the Programme team (including Malala Fund’s In-Country Representatives) but also with Advocacy, Communications and Fundraising colleagues. Specific responsibilities will include:

GAP Fellowship, Grant-Making and Amplifying Voices

● Support Malala Fund’s GAP Manager to implement Malala Fellowship training including leading on logistical support for the events, arranging translation, working with Fellowship facilitators to ensure effective preparation and coordination of the programme.

● Work closely with the GAP Manager to support the selection of new GAP grantees across programme countries, including supporting application review, interviewing candidates and onboarding them to the network.

● Develop and disseminate the GAP communications to share network successes and relevant resources across the network.

● Provide project management support to the implementation of the ‘Voices of Girls’ digital data pilot and expansion strategy.

Support to Programme Management and Coordination

● Work closely with the GAP Manager to support and coordinate activities across the Girl Activist Programme, including drafting communications, arranging and coordinating meetings and proactive follow-up.

● Support the GAP Manager in overall budget management, work planning and GAP reporting, establishing improved processes for programme efficiency.

● Oversee the procurement process for consultants and vendors contracted by the team, ensuring timely and accurate submission of materials and payments.

● Work closely with the GAP Manager to develop streamlined information management systems for the GAP

● Work closely with In-Country Representatives in Brazil, Ethiopia, India, Nigeria, Pakistan and elsewhere to support GAP programming and coordination activities.

Duty of Care

● Support the Gender and Inclusion Advisor to implement the girl-centred safe programming principles in all GAP pillars.

● Provide and monitor regular, accurate and timely data on safeguarding concerns and incidents during programme implementation.

Cross-Organisational Engagement

● Collaborate with Malala Fund’s Advocacy and Communications teams to prepare girls and young women relevant speaking/press opportunities.

● Collaborate with Malala Fund’s fundraising and grants management teams to provide relevant information on the Girl Activist Programme for proposals and reports, as needed

III.  Knowledge, Experience and Behaviours:


● Strong project management, planning and organisation skills.

● Experience supporting girls and young women in their activism and advocacy.

● Experience working with girls’ / women’s rights organisations in implementation of programming.

● Understanding of safeguarding principles  and/or keeping programme participants safe

● Strong interpersonal skills, demonstrated relationship management experience.

● Solid judgement and problem-solving skills with the ability to think critically.

● Strong organisational skills with proven attention to detail, accuracy and quality.

● Strong written and verbal communication skills

● Experience managing and/or implementing multi-country programmes, projects and events in Global South country contexts.

● Experience working with people from diverse backgrounds and countries, providing remote support.

● Strong commitment to Malala Fund’s mission, purpose and values.

● Strong commitment to gender equality, anti-racism, anti-discrimination, decolonisation and social justice

● Strong commitment to professional development and continued learning.

● Excellent team player with ability to work independently and in collaboration with colleagues at all levels across departments and external stakeholders.

● Ability and willingness to travel internationally (approximately 10%)


● Experience booking complex travel, including securing travel visas.

● A bachelor’s degree or equivalent in social and political science or a related field.

● Working knowledge of any major language(s) spoken in Malala Fund programme countries.

● A background in international education, advocacy and/or gender issues preferred.

● Experience in safeguarding and/or child protection.

● Experience in the management of/engagement with research and data collection.

● Experience working in one or more of the countries where Malala Fund is currently working with partners.

Note: This position is eligible for immigration sponsorship in the U.K. Candidates who are not currently authorised to work in the U.S. but wish to be may also apply, however a successful sponsorship petition is not guaranteed.
