Job Title: Head of Finance

Duration: Permanent

Hours: 36 hours per week – Monday to Friday

Salary: £62,300 per annum, plus pension and benefits

Location: Hybrid – Homebased and National Office, Northampton

Overall job purpose

To lead and develop the Finance team and provide financial management and business support. To lead CCT’s audit process, month-end process and the Trust’s investments and banking services. To support the Director of Finance and Commercial on projects as required.

The Head of Finance will have responsibility for managing the Trust’s accounting system.  The postholder will also lead the annual audit, month end reporting and investment and banking services.  Working closely with the Director of Finance and Commercial and Finance Analyst, they will provide internal and external stakeholders with the necessary financial reports to manage Trust business.

This role is also responsible for deputising for the Director of Finance & Commercial in their absence.

We are looking for a Finance Manager to join our financial team at the DofE.  The successful candidate will be responsible for ensuring the integrity and efficiency of financial transaction processing and procedures related to a defined group of stakeholders (vendors and staff). 

Maintain the stewardship of resources within the organisation and service internal and external stakeholder needs by ensuring adherence to policy and procedures and managing the development of finance team processes and people.  Support the identification and management of risk within financial activities.
 

Payables and Treasury team: ensure suppliers, staff and volunteers are processed and paid accurately and on time for the services and support they provide, ensure cashflow is managed to enable liquidity alongside maximising returns to be reinvested in charitable purposes.
 

What we are looking for:

A proactive and collaborative individual with strong technical expertise and a people‑centred approach. 

You will be a near‑qualified or finalist accountant (AAT, ACCA/CIMA/ICAEW or equivalent experience). 

Who can demonstrate within a working environment a  solid understanding of accounting principles and hands‑on experience across financial transactions, reconciliations, journals, and month‑end processes.  

You will be motivated by delivering an accurate, efficient and continually improving finance service, demonstrate robust attention to detail, a commitment to good stewardship of resources, and confidence in supervising control procedures to support strong financial governance.

The role

• Support with the operational re-design of financial systems providing strategic oversight of major projects such as introduction of Bromcom for financial processes, ensuring robust due diligence, and stakeholder  management.
• Act as a key advisor to Trustees, auditors and external stakeholders including the DfE and Local Authority.
• Drive value for money through effective procurement, contract negotiation and cost optimisation initiatives.
• Lead and develop the finance function, fostering a high-performing, collaborative and forward-thinking team culture.
• Support wider organisational leadership, overseeing linked operational areas including IT and educational visits.
• Identify opportunities for income generation, funding and financial innovation to support future growth.

Essential criteria

• Fully qualified accountant (ACA, ACCA, CIMA, CIPFA or equivalent)
• Proven experience in a senior financial leadership role within a complex organisation
• Strong track record of leading financial strategy, planning and reporting
• Experience managing multi-million-pound budgets and driving financial sustainability
• Demonstrable experience leading transformation projects (systems, operations or organisational change)
• Strong stakeholder management skills, with the ability to influence at Board and executive level
• Commercial mindset, with the ability to identify efficiencies and funding opportunities
