In this role you’ll be able to develop your organisation, communication, administration and negotiation skills.

They act as the first point of contact and they make sure all relevant information is circulated to other volunteers and members. And they play an important role in keeping our data and details up to date to comply with data protection legislation.

In this role you’ll develop your administration and organisation skills. Most importantly you’ll be help your local group run efficiently, so they can keep providing valuable services to our MS community.

About the Cycle Responder role

St John Ambulance has operated Cycle Response Units for more than 15 years having invested significantly in state of the art equipment and helping to establish public safety cycling across the UK emergency services. CRU has become a key response asset for St John Ambulance at major events (e.g. marathons, parades and significant national occasions) as well as smaller community based events, often being the first resource on scene. Being part of a CRU is an exciting way to give back, and suited to someone who has the time, energy and passion to learn new skills whilst on ‘the job’.

Getting started

We are advertising for cycle responders across different locations in the North East. Interviewing and recruitment will take place across the region, as required by applications/demand. Course will be run during the spring of 2025 across our pre-identified locations.

As a specialist function, volunteers are asked to consider that beyond any local events which will be advertised to them, a number of larger deployments and out-of-area events are included as part of the role. We also ask candidates to consider that this role does expect them to already be comfortable in their cycling skills and preferably regularly cycling in their day-to-day life across different road conditions/surfaces. Training for role will revolve around aspects of group riding and SJA-specific ways of working.

There will be an interview, in person, comprising of a discussion around candidate's motivations and cycling skills. Successful candidates will be shortlisted and offered a place on the next available course.

SUMMARY

Prison volunteers are the backbone of Fine Cell Work. Supported by the Fine Cell Work programmes team and by other staff at the FCW office, they teach and administer FCW stitching groups in prisons.

Our prison volunteers work in teams to organise classes and teach our stitchers, as well as to provide information to the prison and to the FCW office. The precise mix of skills and tasks will vary slightly from prison to prison.

Volunteering in prison for Fine Cell Work ideally requires not only a good level of needlework skill but also some teaching experience and/or experience of working with socially-excluded groups. Volunteers must be patient and non-judgemental in order to work effectively.

This document describes the role of prison volunteering teams as a whole. Individuals who do not have all the skills described below may find a role alongside other volunteers who do.

PURPOSE

• Developing stitchers’ skills and confidence
• Acting as FCW ambassadors in the prison
• Building effective working relationships with prison staff, stitchers, and other volunteers
• Providing information to the FCW office for administrative and evaluative purposes

ACTIVITIES

Teaching and support

• Teaching prisoners to stitch FCW products using our premade kits
• Encouraging and supporting stitchers to take on responsibility as class coordinators and peer mentors
• Encouraging and helping prisoners who wish to undertake our accredited training courses with the Open College Network

Admin and liaison

• Ensuring a supply of kits and training materials appropriate to stitchers’ individual skill levels and learning needs
• Returning completed kits to the FCW office with invoices
• Regularly communicating with the Fine Cell Work programmes team

Monitoring and information-gathering

• Ensuring accurate record keeping of stitchers' pay, productivity and progress 
• Occasionally gathering other information requested by the office

Meetings/training

• Participating in occasional volunteer meetings
• Participating in training and workshops as requested by FCW or the prison

SKILLS, QUALIFICATIONS, AND EXPERIENCE NEEDED

Essential

• Support for FCW’s ethos
• Ability to observe boundaries in personal behaviour
• Teamwork
• Experience of tapestry and/or embroidery techniques
• Reliability, patience and flexibility
• Accurate record-keeping
• Access to the internet
• Able to use email and word processors to a basic level
• Ability to travel to prison

Desirable

• Teaching experience and/or experience of working with vulnerable and socially excluded groups
• Able to use spreadsheets to a basic level
• Access to a car

You must be over 18 to carry out this role.

COMMITMENT REQUIRED

Prison volunteers generally run classes for two hours every 2 weeks.

With travel time and some admin work after groups we ask prison volunteers to set 
 aside a morning or afternoon every 2 weeks.

We hope that most prison-based volunteers will be able to commit themselves to working with us for at least a year or two as this allows time for group participants to complete qualifications and develop their skills to a high standard.

LOCATION

Volunteers work in prisons around the UK dependant on where groups are based.

SUPERVISION AND COMMUNICATION

Each group has a lead volunteer who reports to the Volunteer & Programmes Manager at the Fine Cell Work office however we do encourage regular communication between the programmes team and all volunteers.

We also have regular reflective practice sessions for prison volunteers which take place on Zoom every other month.

BENEFITS

Fine Cell Work will cover your travel costs and out-of-pocket expenses related to posting kits to the office. We can also pay out-of-pocket expenses for purchasing materials and other items, but you must agree this in advance with the Production team at Head Office.

We provide induction training before you start volunteering in prison, and training thereafter at intervals throughout the year.

You can make a difference…Age UK Wandsworth is a small, local, independent charity that has been working with older people in the area since 1963. We rely on your support to keep serving the older residents with in the Wandsworth community. We have a dedicated team of experienced staff and a large network of dedicated local volunteers. About the role 

You will be volunteering alongside our Community Engagement team, where activities will change and adapt based on client feedback and their evolving needs. Volunteers will help to facilitate activities and events across the borough, including but not limited to our digital inclusion drop-in sessions, coffee mornings, LGBTQ+ group and future activities which will include a gardening club and walking group. Most of our activities run for an hour or two, and we require volunteers to commit to attending at least one session a month.

Various opportunities are available based on our event schedule, which runs weekdays between the hours of 9am-4pm for 1–2 hours..

London City Mission (LCM) shares the gospel alongside the local church of London, equipping everyday Christians to lovingly bring a message of hope in Christ to those least likely to hear it.

Webber Street is LCM’S Day Centre for people who are homeless - based just around the corner from Waterloo station. We welcome up to 70 guests a day - we seek to give them not only relief from life on the streets, but also help in taking the first step out of homelessness.

We also seek to meet the emotional and spiritual needs of guests, as well as the physical ones, to help restore some of the dignity that life on the streets has taken from them and to share the life-transforming news of Jesus!

Role Description:

Morning Volunteer (Mondays to Thursdays 8:00-12:30)

This role involves serving our guests breakfast at our morning sessions when we usually have around 60-80 guests each session. Our volunteers come from many walks of life, backgrounds and church traditions, we want to make the best use of your gifts to connect with all of our guests and provide relevant support to them.

No. of volunteers required:  3 each morning

Afternoon Volunteer (Mondays to Thursdays 13:00-16:00)

You can also join us in helping at our weekly afternoon sessions when we have a smaller number of guests. Perhaps you have a gift of listening and coming alongside others; maybe you have artistic gifts where you can come up with new ideas for art and crafts activities and taking the lead in making these happen; maybe you have the skills to help the men with their CVs; maybe you like to show hospitality in welcoming our guests or have a heart serve drinks and refreshments; you can also join or be the lead of our weekly Bible Group.

Our weekly afternoon schedule are as follows:

Mondays- Arts group

Wednesdays- Bible group

Thursdays- Drop in (fortnightly)

No. of volunteers required:  2 each afternoon

Women only space (Fridays 9:00-12:30)

This is a designated safe space for women guests which operates once per week at our centre.  You can join our team if you would like to support our women guests.

Note: This is for female volunteers only

Centre Team

This role involves supporting the centre practically by working in our clothes store, assisting in the kitchen, and doing other practical jobs around the building such as maintenance. It's a hands-on type of role but a vital part of the ongoing ministry of Webber Street.

General Tasks

The role of volunteers at Webber Street Day Centre is to welcome and care for our guests from homeless communities. You will help to ensure smooth operation of the Day Centre by preparing the space and leaving, to help with respective activities based on its weekly programme. Specific duties will include some of the following:

Morning sessions:

o Meeting and welcoming the people who come to Webber Street Day Centre

o Assisting our staff and other volunteers in preparing the room for our guests and leaving it clean and tidy at the end of the session

o Socialising and chatting with those who attend

o Having gospel conversations with our guests

o Praying with guests at their request

o Signposting guests to where they can get help and advice

Afternoon sessions:

o Similar to the tasks in morning session, while volunteer may lead or help with art and craft activities, lead or help with bible group, welcoming guests and help with refreshments.

About You

We are looking for Christians have a compassionate heart to care for those on the margins of society and want to put their faith into action by serving.

We want to make the best use of your gifts and experience, as well as finding a time that fits with your schedule, so we’ll work with you to define how we can serve best. We have volunteers commit to come weekly, fortnightly or monthly etc.

You should be comfortable sharing your faith with guests at natural opportunities.
