Job Purpose 

This is a new and vital role for the Foundation, involving developing our work around employment, which will support British Muslims to access employment and develop their careers in fields in which we are currently under-represented. You will be part of a matrix-working team that will collectively develop this piece of work, so you will not be simply implementing an existing plan; you’ll be there from the start with key input into how this should be designed and implemented. 

Your key role will be to engage with graduates and those with advanced vocational skills, to support them to develop the necessary skills to access employment and to support them once they are in employment in partnership with employers. Our target industries are journalism, law, arts, public policy, and tech/AI. This will involve direct engagement with employers, with graduates and other job seekers, with Aziz Scholarship/Internship alumni and with intermediary bodies that provide links between job seekers and employers.

The Role

We are looking for a confident, values‑led Head of Communications to lead SSAFA’s communications function at a time when trust, clarity and judgement truly matter.

This is a senior leadership role within the Fundraising, Marketing and Communications directorate, responsible for protecting and strengthening SSAFA’s reputation, leading issue management, and delivering clear, engaging internal communications for staff and volunteers across a complex national organisation.

We are looking for an all-round Communications Manager to join our small team.  You'll be able to build on your existing experience with some exciting upcoming projects that will have direct impact on the head and neck cancer community – as well as generating awareness across the general public.  We have a unique opportunity to develop our organisation to create maximum impact for head and neck cancer patients and their families while staying true to our origins.  There’s a lot of work to do.

Main responsibilities and duties:

• Contribute to a PR and communications strategy in conjunction with our Executive Director.
• Produce and rollout a new brand identity for the organisation.
• Manage and develop a new organisation website.
• Maximise media opportunities by identifying news angles and producing stong stories.
• Produce high quality materials – written, digital and visual – to promote the organisation and engage audiences to action.
• Use case studies and impact to develop our storytelling and create compelling copy to encourage financial support.
• Oversee literature production to support head and neck cancer patients and their families through their experience and work towards PIFtick accreditation.

What You’ll Do:  

As our Head of Marketing, you will drive the League’s brand marketing and digital work. You will provide leadership for our Digital and Brand & Creative teams, overseeing our development of marketing collateral including our website, social media, and printed materials. You also manage brand and marketing projects and activities, including the tracking of audience insights and the development of our target audience profiles, and you will be responsible for the League’s ambassador programme.

In this role, you will play a key role in ensuring that our campaigns, communications and fundraising activity are aligned, effective and rooted in strong audience insight. You will also deputise for our Director of Fundraising and Marketing as required.

Your responsibilities will include:

• Provide day-to-day leadership for the League’s Marketing teams (encompassing its Digital and Brand & Creative teams) and all their activities, including the development and delivery of brand, marketing and social media materials and campaigns, to maximise awareness and support for the charity.
• Provide inspiring leadership to manage and motivate staff to deliver on their targets, by ensuring they have clear objectives, key performance indicators (KPIs) and development plans.
• Coordinate creative support to all teams, particularly Campaigns and Fundraising.
• Manage assigned marketing and awareness projects (e.g. the Business Without Bloodsports Pledge), to drive support for our work.
• Manage the development and use of our key target audience profiles.
• Manage the League’s Ambassador programme, of celebrity supporters and high-profile influencers.
• Oversee brand guardianship across all channels, both offline and online, to ensure all collateral adheres to guidelines.
• Manage our brand guidelines including visual and verbal identity, to drive consistency throughout the League.
• Conduct supporter research as required, including to test and develop new initiatives

The Role
We are seeking an experienced fundraising professional to join us as Head of Fundraising. The successful candidate will play a pivotal role in shaping and delivering our fundraising strategy across community, events and volunteering, trusts and grants, corporate and philanthropy by crafting ambitious regional plans, nurturing high-performing teams, and driving excellence in supporter engagement and recognition. The Head of Fundraising will work collaboratively with the Individual Giving and Engagement team to drive new business pipelining and amplify fundraising campaigns, develop new fundraising products, and represent SCAA at external events and sector initiatives.

The ideal candidate will be an experienced team leader with significant experience working across a variety of fundraising disciplines and of developing and implementing fundraising strategies.

The successful candidate can be based from home, but this role will require regular travel to our bases at Perth and Aberdeen Airports and throughout Scotland. The usual hours and days of work will be Monday to Friday, 9am—5pm.

About You

Essential

• Strong background in a variety of fundraising disciplines and a track record in growing fundraising income over multiple years within a charity, non-profit or values-led organisation.

• Experience of developing and implementing fundraising strategies aligned to organisational objectives.

• Experienced team leader who can motivate, inspire and guide others to deliver results.

• Strong understanding of data protection (GDPR), confidentiality and safeguarding requirements.
