About the role  

We are looking for an experienced Head of Finance to help deliver our mission and support the growth and consolidation of the charity. As a member of our Senior Management Team, you will play a key role in implementing our new strategy as well as managing risk.

You will take overall responsibility for the organisation’s financial management, working closely with the Chief Executive and the Treasurer.

You will provide effective finance partner support to other functions within the charity to support its fundraising, operations and development.

Financial Accountant – Income and Payroll Focus (FPA&A)

The Role

• Driving the period close process for income and payroll-related areas, reviewing actuals, trends and exceptions and resolving issues promptly.
• Preparing and reviewing balance sheet reconciliations, including deferred income and income provisions.
• Working closely with Payroll to ensure salary-related accruals and adjustments are accurately reflected within the accounts.
• Supporting budget holders and Finance colleagues with income and payroll queries, helping to identify root causes and reduce recurring issues.
• Providing cover and support around billing, income processing and cash collection, helping maintain resilient processes across the team.
• Identifying opportunities to improve processes, with a focus on getting things right first time and reducing manual entries at month and year-end.
• Supporting the preparation of statutory accounts and year-end audit, producing high-quality working papers and responding to auditor queries.

About you:

You will have a good understanding of income recognition, accruals, deferred income, provisions and payroll-related costs, alongside practical experience of balance sheet reconciliations and period close activities. Previous involvement in audit processes and preparing audit evidence or working papers will also be important.

Beyond your technical expertise, you will be proactive, collaborative and solutions-focused, with strong attention to detail and a commitment to financial accuracy.

You will need:

• Studying towards or already hold a professional accounting qualification such as ACA, ACCA or CIMA
• Experience across financial accounting, income accounting and/or month-end processes.
• Comfortable working to tight deadlines.
• Strong understanding of income recognition, accruals, deferred income, provisions and payroll-related costs
• Practical experience of balance sheet reconciliations and period close activities.

· Previous involvement in audit processes and preparing audit evidence or working papers will also be important.

• Strong attention to detail and communication skills to both internal and external stakeholders.
• Confident using finance systems and excel.

This permanent, part-time role is ideal for someone with strong financial administration and bookkeeping experience who is committed to social justice and human rights. You'll be responsible for the day-to-day management of our finances, maintaining accurate records, supporting reporting and compliance, and providing financial information to help staff and trustees make informed decisions.

In the coming year. we are developing new programmes, working with leaders who are developing small community led social and environmental projects as well as leading larger charities and social businesses developing social investment and housing solutions.

We’re not a traditional funder. Our grants tend to be small, but they punch above their weight, helping social and environmental entrepreneurs take the next step to grow their organisations. Our grants run alongside learning programmes, challenging and supporting leaders. We’re innovative in how we do this, through both traditional and enterprise grants. We lead on Match Trading™, a grant that challenges leaders to grow their trading income, and we are working on further grants innovations.

You will work with our Grants Team, Project Co-ordinators and Assessment Lead to develop and support grant management across a range of programmes. Your role will be to lead on specific programmes, including supporting assessment, onboarding and grant management. You will ensure that grantees are fully supported to manage their grants and ensure that grant management is compliant, auditable, efficient, and timely. You will support the development of grant policies and processes, writing grant paperwork and documentation, overseeing payments, and reporting to the wider Programmes Team and others about our work.

You don’t need to have managed grants before, but you do need to have a good understanding of a wide range enterprises and charities, gained through experience of training, business consultancy or development support. You will have a good understanding of business models, legal structures and financial systems that social and environmental organisations and community run and owned businesses may use. You will need to understand social enterprise finances, be able to read accounts, budgets, cashflows and have a good knowledge of social enterprise income streams.

We need someone who understands how hard it is to start up and grow social and environmental enterprises and can support people from diverse backgrounds in managing their grant, finances and growing their business.
