At St John Ambulance, we are looking to develop our volunteering offer and become an even more integral part of our communities through delivering community first aid and education. 

We need people who have a passion for helping others, care about their communities and want to make a difference, supporting them to become safe and more resilient by sharing your first aid skills and knowledge. As a Community First Aider, you’ll deliver first aid to those in need through local events, as well as provide education to the public so that the ripple effect of First Aid grows.

Through supporting the growth of community partnerships, you will bring people along to our cause, growing our membership and fundraising base and spreading the message that First Aid Saves Lives. 

Through volunteering as a Community First Aider, you’ll get a huge sense of satisfaction and pride delivering an essential service. It’s great for you, great for your community and great for our nation, and it requires only a small commitment of your time. 

We will make sure you will have access to a proper induction to volunteering with SJA and the training you need for the role you take on. Network meetings are held on Wednesday evenings between 19:30-21:00 during school term time although these are normally reduced to twice monthly in winter. It is important for applicants to generally be able to attend meetings.

Interviews will be held around similar times to the regular meetings on Wednesday evenings in Heanor.

Induction evenings will be held at same time and location as the regular meetings and an existing volunteer will provide direct support as a Buddy.

As well we online training, in person training will be provided. In person training is usually over one weekend.

Responsibilities

• Leading and inspiring a volunteer movement across a community or geography to deliver community first aid, community education and fundraising activities
• Delivering a diverse, inclusive and positive volunteering experience for those within your network
• Building strong relationships with local communities and organisations (e.g., Local Authorities, NHS, Council for Volunteering Services, etc)
• Leading your community first aid network to respond to the needs of your local communities.

What you will be accountable for

• Convening all St John people in your geography to collaboratively develop a clear plan to deliver against St John’s priorities, as set out in our new strategy.
• Delivery of collaboratively set KPIs in the following areas – Clinical cover at local events, Fundraising, Community Engagement including educating the public and communication and media, and expansion of our work with Young People.
• Developing an operating model for your geography that supports adults and young people, Priory and SJA volunteers, operational and non-operational volunteers to join in, either directly through network delivery or through associated ‘spokes’.
• Inspiring and supporting volunteers to try new ways of working to put the above in practice to deliver more impact in communities.
• Ensuring St John is represented at local networking opportunities and events to raise our profile or advocate for community health.
• Ensure that all volunteers in your network are equipped with the necessary skills and knowledge

Shooting Star Children’s Hospices is seeking an experienced and dedicated academic with a strong interest in paediatric palliative care, or related field to join our Research Governance Committee as a Volunteer Academic Member. This is an excellent opportunity to contribute to the strategic development of research at a research active children’s hospice, to ensure that our research activities meet the highest standards of integrity, ethics and governance. 

You will work with the Committee Chair, the Research Fellow, and other committee members to support research that makes a meaningful difference to children with life-limiting conditions and their families as well as bereaved families, including those where a child died unexpectedly. 

Appointment to the Committee will be subject to confirmation by the Shooting Star Children’s Hospices Trustee Board.

Duties and key responsibilities

· Participate in quarterly meetings: Attend and contribute to online committee meetings held four times per year (papers and slide deck will be prepared by the Chair). 

· Review research proposals: Provide expert review of project proposals, contributing to the assurance of ethical and governance standards. 

· Support research oversight: Help ensure that all research complies with regulatory and ethical requirements and reflects best practices. 

· Contribute academic expertise: Share your knowledge and experience to strengthen the quality and impact of the charity’s research portfolio. 

· Promote collaboration: Encourage partnerships between Shooting Star Children’s Hospices and wider academic, clinical, and research communities. 

· Champion good governance: Actively promote equity, transparency, and excellence in research oversight. 

Essential skills and experience

· Proven experience in academic research, research governance, and research ethics. 

· Strong academic background in higher education, and health or social care research. 

· In-depth understanding of research compliance frameworks (e.g., GDPR, HRA, UKRIO, Caldicott Guidelines, or equivalent). 

· Ability to evaluate research proposals and provide constructive feedback. 

· Excellent communication and collaboration skills. 

· Confidence using virtual meeting platforms and digital collaboration tools. 

Desirable attributes

• Academic research background with a track record of publications in the area of paediatric palliative care or related field.

• Previous experience serving on or chairing a research committee or governance board.

• Commitment to promoting equity, diversity, and inclusion in research.

Commitment

• Quarterly committee meetings (Approximately 1 hour per meeting).

• Reviewing project proposals (Approximately 1 hour per month).

• Email communication and ad hoc queries (Approximately 1 hour per month).

• 2–3 years in the role would be appreciated for both parties to gain the most out of this experience.

• This is a voluntary role. Reasonable expenses related to attendance and participation will be reimbursed.

Across Yorkshire, Yorkshire’s Brain Tumour Charity (YBTC) is Yorkshire and Humber’s leading

brain tumour charity. Offering practical, financial and emotional support to both adult and child

brain tumour patients, together with their families.

We fund brain tumour research in Yorkshire; we hope this research, dedicated to identifying new

approaches to the discovery and treatment of brain tumours, will improve outcomes for patients.

At YBTC we are a small team who are growing to meet the needs of those affected by a brain

tumour in Yorkshire. Around 15 new cases of primary brain tumour are diagnosed in the region

every week.

About WE Care Home Improvements

WE Care Home Improvements is a local, independent, and award-winning home improvement agency. Our mission is to enable more older and disabled people, those on low incomes, and other vulnerable people, to get the support they can trust to live independently in the home of their choice. We are also not-for-profit. Any money generated goes back into the organisation to support our clients and help vulnerable people pay for essential works that they couldn't afford themselves.

The impact of poor housing on health and well-being is well documented. It results in significant medical need, particularly for older people and is a contributory factor to a number of health conditions. The costs to the NHS are also very significant particularly around cold and damp homes and risks of falling. Falls are the largest cause of emergency hospital admissions for older people and are a major precipitant of people moving to long term nursing or residential care.

We provide home improvement services and products to increase independence, comfort, and mobility in the home. We support everyone aged over 60, as well as people of all ages who have a disability, are on a low income or coming out of hospital. Our support includes specialist advice on home adaptations and accessible bathrooms.

We also provide home improvement and repair services in the Bristol, Bath and Northeast Somerset, North Somerset, Gloucestershire, and South Gloucestershire areas. We provide help for individuals that are leaving hospital and completing minor repairs such as fixing a leaking tap. 

About the Making Space project

​​As the name suggest, our innovative Making Space service helps people with hoarding tendencies make space in their homes. This project was developed in partnership with the Psychology Department of Bath University and is funded by Bristol City Council. Compulsive hoarding is a hidden issue and can severely impact on people’s quality of life preventing them from living safely and comfortably in their homes. Hoarding is also associated with shame and people can be reluctant to work with support services.

We offer comprehensive training to our volunteers to help them build the trust of the clients they work with and develop a more complex understanding of an individual’s life experiences (often traumas) that lead to accumulating possessions. 

Since Covid our service has experienced unprecedented demand, and we are urgently recruiting for more volunteers in the Bristol area. We are looking for committed, enthusiastic and passionate volunteers who, after training, will help empower clients to manage their clutter. We adopt a therapeutic and patient approach with everyone we work supporting them to make their homes safe and comfortable.

​​What will you be doing and how often?

​Volunteering for our Making Space project is a unique opportunity to make a difference. Not only will you be helping people struggling with hoarding make more space in their homes, but you’ll build up a supportive and trusting relationship with them helping to overcome the stigma associated with the condition:

• Empower clients to understand why they gather possessions and why they find it challenging to let go of them.
• Build a therapeutic relationship with the client and together form a plan for clearing areas of the house and organising their possessions.
• Coordinate the clearance of the client’s items; ensuring they have consented to which items are being cleared and agreed to how they are being distributed (i.e. charity shop, recycled etc.).
• The role involves working on a 1-2-1 basis with your client in their home and often alongside a Making Space Caseworker. We will apply for an enhanced-DBS check, and you need to provide us with details of two referees who will be asked to complete a detailed reference for you. 
• The length of a visit is flexible, usually 2hrs every 7-14 days with a client.
• We will review how things are going with your client every 6-9 visits.
• Volunteers will work in liaison with Caseworkers and our Volunteer Coordinator, with mutual support from other Making Space volunteers.

Personal qualities

• ​​A passion for supporting vulnerable people with complex needs.
• ​Have a warm, empathetic and non-judgemental manner.
• ​The ability to accurately record your visits, have access to email and demonstrate basic computer skills.
• ​Good listener and patient and reliable.
• ​Have confidence to support people with complex needs on a 1-2-1 basis in what can be a challenging environment.
• ​​Have access to a car, bike or able to travel on public transport (all travel expenses will be covered).

The Coroners' Courts Support Service (CCSS) is a registered Charity whose trained volunteers give emotional and practical support to bereaved families and other witnesses attending an inquest.

We need volunteers to provide emotional support and practical help to bereaved families, witnesses and others attending Inquests at Coroners' Court. Our volunteers at court also provide help and assistance to the Coroners' Officers, as and when required.

We are looking for reliable, supportive people with excellent communication skills. A mature and calm attitude is needed in order to be able to talk to people during a sometimes bewildering and emotional experience. Volunteers must be willing to undergo a period of observations and shadowing, as well as attend a 3 day training course. A minimum commitment of one day (9:00am - 5:00pm) per fortnight is asked for. Training and mentoring is provided and travel expenses to the court are reimbursed.

New volunteers should possess good communication and listening skills and the ability to empathise with people they support.
