Across the UK, our 270 local groups play a vital part in supporting people affected by MS. They provide sense of belonging, unity and friendship. And they deliver services and support for their local MS community.

We are looking to recruit an Administration Volunteer for the Newcastle and Gateshead Group. Our Administration Volunteers are the linchpin for our local groups’ activities. They act as the first point of contact and they make sure all relevant information is circulated to other volunteers and members. And they play an important role in keeping our data and details up to date to comply with data protection legislation.

In this role you’ll develop your administration and organisation skills. Most importantly you’ll be help your local group run efficiently, so they can keep providing valuable services to our MS community. 

Time Commitment

We estimate this role will need around 2 hours a week. Our roles are flexible and aim to fit around you. Time commitments for this role may vary depending on your activities. This is an ongoing role.

This is a great opportunity to gain experience within a large charity and develop your existing skills and learn new ones. We need you to get involved and help make positive changes to the lives of people affected by MS.

About you

You’ll have an interest in the MS Society and the work that we do, as well as the enthusiasm to represent both us and our values locally. You will understand the needs of people affected by MS in your area and be sympathetic to the needs and motivations of volunteers. You’ll be confident using Microsoft Office, the internet and email. You’ll be able to apply disability, equality and inclusion practices and understand and apply our risk management system. Ideally you’ll understand the local area and organisations that provide local services.

You will be reliable and easy to contact and you need to live in or near the area the group to carry out this role.

Description

Join our amazing volunteer team to raise awareness of sight loss and RNIB services at local events. You’ll be making a real difference to people living with sight loss by helping to create a world without barriers. This face to face opportunity will see you providing information about RNIB services and activities to help people with sight loss live the lives they want, enabling them to hear about the support that is available, and how they can help others.

What you’ll be doing
• Creating a welcoming and interesting display stand.
• Speaking directly to people affected by sight loss.
• Being a friendly face of RNIB locally - engaging with a diverse range of people.
• Providing information and demonstrations of basic independent living aids for the general public and professionals.

We are seeking an enthusiastic and organised Public Relations (PR) Assistant Volunteer to help manage our public image, develop media relationships, and support communication efforts that celebrate and elevate trans voices.

Job Summary

The PR Assistant Volunteer will support the development and execution of public relations strategies that raise awareness of Trans Celebration’s mission and campaigns. You’ll work closely with the communications and marketing team to craft press releases, build media contacts, coordinate outreach, and assist with managing our public-facing messaging.

Key Responsibilities

• Draft and edit press releases, media advisories, and official statements.
• Maintain and update media contact lists.
• Support the distribution of press materials and monitor media coverage.
• Assist in coordinating media outreach and follow-ups.
• Help prepare briefing documents for interviews, panels, or public appearances.
• Monitor news and social media channels for trends and relevant topics.
• Support brand messaging consistency across all public communications.
• Contribute to the organisation’s internal and external newsletters.
• Assist with PR event logistics, such as media kits and guest communications.

What We’re Looking For

Skills & Competencies:

• Strong written and verbal communication skills.
• Ability to write clearly and persuasively for various audiences.
• Familiarity with media relations and PR best practices.
• Organised and able to manage multiple tasks at once.
• Comfort with digital tools such as Google Workspace, Canva, or media monitoring platforms.
• Knowledge of current affairs, especially those related to LGBTQIA+ and human rights issues.

Bonus Experience (Not Required):

• Previous experience in public relations, journalism, communications, or marketing.
• Understanding of press cycles and media outreach strategy.
• Familiarity with LGBTQIA+ media and advocacy networks.

It’s up to you how much you commit. We have volunteers who support for a couple of hours a week and some do more. Many people volunteer either a morning or an afternoon each week - this is something that will be discussed at the selection stage, after you’ve applied.

Our amazing team of volunteers help us run over 100 shops across England and Wales.  Every donated item that you sort, prepare and sell helps to raise vital funds to support us in our mission to make sure no one, no matter how complex their disabilities, is isolated, left out, or unable to fulfil their potential. Our shops are at the heart of local communities – sharing the work of Sense, and helping to secure support for our life changing work.

What your role will involve

There are a variety of tasks that you can get involved with in the shop, including:

• Welcoming and assisting customers, providing great customer service and a fantastic shopping experience
• Receiving donated goods from members of the public
• Sorting, steaming, tagging and preparing donated goods for sale
• Creating eye catching window and in-shop displays
• Keeping the shop floor well stocked, tidy, clean and organised
• Processing sales and serving on the till
• Promoting Gift Aid and other Sense fundraising initiatives
• Acting as an ambassador for Sense; promoting the shop and Sense in your local community
• Supporting with the recruitment and training of new volunteers
• Following new health and safety measures to ensure the safety of everyone

Responsibilities:

1. Visit veterans, provide companionship, read, play games, or assist with non-medical tasks.
2. Visit to offer friendly conversation and emotional support to veterans who live in assisted living or long-term care homes
3. Support veterans with small home projects, yard work, or safety modifications.
4. Deliver food to homebound or disabled veterans.
5. Help veterans in transition to civilian careers by assist them in Resume Writing & Job Coaching.
6. Observe and understand the physical, mental, and emotional needs of veterans.
7. Encourage and assist veterans to maintain their independence where possible.
8. Support engagement in social activities or hobbies to promote well-being.
9.  Assist with educational goals or mentorship for younger veterans.
10. Help organize or run events on Veterans Day, Memorial Day, etc.

Our Visitor Welcome volunteers create a positive first impression with a warm welcome; helping all visitors get all they need from their visit. You’ll also help us provide a personalised thank you, leaving people with a positive lasting impression. 

 This role will suit you if you are:

Tasks and responsibilities

• Creating warm welcomes for every visitor, putting their needs first
• Sharing information, answering questions and helping visitors get the most out of their visit.
• Giving personalised ‘goodbyes’ and heartfelt ‘thank yous’
• Multi-tasking across the site to help us keep the property looking fabulous, reporting where something may need attention.
• Looking out for ways to do the little things that make a big difference. This might include driving visitors around on our Shuttle, or supporting in the bookshop.
• Helping visitors get their bearings and informing on the best routes around the property depending on their needs and our offer.
• Finding out what’s on offer at Ickworth and other local sites, so you can encourage people to do more, stay longe and bring others. Promote the National Trust and deepen their connection to our cause.
• Keeping in touch with the wider team, so you know what’s happening, particularly during event days.
• You are important in making sure things run as smoothly as possible – this includes getting to know health and safety and evacuation procedures.

 All National Trust volunteers will be asked to

• Respect and uphold the National Trust values whilst volunteering with us.
• Complete training required of all NT volunteers and any role specific training
• Adhere to relevant policies and processes including safeguarding, health and safety, and equality and diversity. 

 We want all our volunteers to feel welcome and to have an equally positive experience when volunteering with us. So, volunteers will:

• Be provided with the necessary induction, training, equipment and reasonable adjustments to do this role well and safely
• Be offered expenses to cover agreed travel costs between home and place of volunteering.
• Have remote access to support, news and rotas via our volunteer website
