An accredited museum and award winning visitor attraction, Stow Maries Great War Aerodrome is a charity and the largest surviving Great War Aerodrome in Europe.

We are a centre for volunteering and, with the assistance of over 100 volunteers, we deliver an extensive programme of educational and fundraising events each year designed to appeal to a broad spectrum of visitors including historians, aviation enthusiasts, school parties and families. 

We are looking for volunteers to help in our beautiful 1917 Airmen’s Mess Café with views over the aerodrome and the wildlife that thrives there. It is the heart of our site and popular with all our supporters and volunteers.

We open to the public, most Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays. Hours are flexible but are mainly worked on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays when we are open to the public.

Come and join our friendly team under the capable management of our experienced Kitchen Supervisor.

No previous catering experience is needed as training will be given.

The mentoring project at Esteem invites members of the community to share their skills and experience by mentoring a young person with similar interests. 

Mentoring is an important part of our organisation and runs alongside Work Experience opportunities, providing tailored volunteer opportunities to young people aged 14-26, social activities and wellbeing support.  Creating space for young adults to thrive within their lives and communities.

Role Purpose

This is an exciting opportunity to volunteer for a charity that is passionate about giving young people the chance to develop their skills and confidence, both for their own benefit and for that of society as a whole. 

You can make a difference by mentoring 14-26 year olds who are developing or discovering their potential.

The mentors’ role is to support young people reach their next step focusing on their vocational development and encouraging progression into or maintaining Education, Employment or Training. The profile of many of Esteem’s young adults is that they have low levels of confidence and may be quite anxious; some young people may be neurodiverse including have a history of mental health problems, they also may have faced homelessness and other life affecting issues including the effects of long term unemployment 

• You will be based at Esteem’s Shoreham office but may meet your mentee in a public place such as a coffee shop, if that is what you both prefer and meets safeguarding requirements.

• You will be skills matched with a young person who will have similar interests, experience or an interest in your professional field. You will support your mentee by identifying and highlighting their skills and establishing realistic and achievable goals by breaking them down into manageable steps. 

• You will enter notes onto our database system UpShot after each meeting with your mentee and will be asked to fill in an outcome form at the conclusion of your mentoring relationship. 

Principal tasks and responsibilities 

1. To meet with your mentee regularly (once a week or once a fortnight) at a convenient time for you both either at the Esteem’s office or in a public place like a cafe. 

2. To offer ongoing vocational support to your mentee and support them to access services (such as in-house Counselling or from external organisations) if they need help with any issues they are dealing with. 

3. To support your mentee through their vocational setting, either volunteering at Esteem or within their personal, work or educational setting.

4. To offer positive feedback and aim to build self-confidence with your mentee.

5. To keep up to date notes of your meetings.

6. Complete regular reviews with the mentee and create a clear action plan if appropriate.

7. Attend all relevant training to your role.

8. To report any safeguarding concerns to the Safeguarding Team.

9. To maintain the required level of confidentiality in all tasks and communications. 

10. Uphold the commitment of the organisation to equality and diversity and its set of values. 

Person Specification

Experience

For this round of recruitment we are looking primarily for those who work in the creative industry and those who may have started their own business and/or have an entrepreneurial background. That being said, we are more than happy to accept applications from those who feel they have other skills and experience that could benefit young adults.

Whilst some experience of mentoring or supporting young adults would be helpful this is something we will cover in the day’s training.

Skills, Abilities and Knowledge 

• Motivated by promoting the development and wellbeing of young people; providing opportunities for growth where possible 

• Ability to problem solve; feeling able to support young adults to overcome obstacles

• Ability to work on own initiative (with guidance from mentor manager) 

• A willingness to undertake a small amount of preparation for each session and to take accurate notes after each session

• Ability and willingness to use computer systems, including googlemail (training provided)

• Good interpersonal skills; ability to listen, empathise and relate to others

The Bath Royal Literary and Scientific Institution promotes and advances science, literature, and art for the public benefit in the City of Bath. This is achieved through:

- Maintaining a museum with exhibits of historical, scientific, literary, or artistic interest.

- Providing a library, lectures, and educational facilities related to literature, science, and art.

- Promoting and publishing useful research in these fields.

The BRLSI operates as a volunteer-led charity, with its Board of Directors overseeing financial affairs and governance. Various committees manage activities, supported by a small team of employed staff. The Board has agreed to create a third committee to oversee cultural and educational activities, which will also report directly to the Board. This is a new volunteer role, established by the Board to lead cultural activities. The successful candidate will become a key member of the senior management team, and will chair a new committee (reporting to the Board) overseeing the organisation's cultural and educational activities.

The Cultural Activities Lead will oversee the development of a rich and varied programme of cultural, curatorial, and educational activities, attracting new audiences and building its reputation. They will facilitate the new committee’s management and advise the Board on strategy and policy. Furthermore, the Lead will establish successful and proactive relationships with local, regional, national and international organisations, helping expand the Institution’s cultural offering and commercial success.

The successful candidate will be a proven leader, experienced in heritage, cultural and/or curatorial sector governance. They will be skilled in project management, relationship-building and budgeting, with a background in volunteer-based organisations. The ideal individual will have Board-level experience and knowledge of capital development projects. They will be passionate about science, literature and the arts and committed to enriching the city of Bath for residents and visitors alike.

Why we want you

We are the RSPCA and it's our vision to live in a world where all animals are respected and treated with compassion. Our volunteers are incredible, they play an essential role in helping us carry out our important animal welfare work every day.

As a trustee of a branch you will have the chance to influence how we care for and prevent cruelty to animals. We are looking for people from all social and cultural backgrounds, with a variety of experience and skills to draw on, whether these have been formed through life or work situations.

You'll be passionate about animal welfare and alongside other trustees, will manage the affairs of a local RSPCA Branch to promote and provide animal welfare within the branch area.

As a minimum, trustees would normally be expected to attend a monthly committee meeting lasting some 2 to 3 hours. However, the commitment may vary dependent on whether or not the trustee takes on additional duties such as the role of chairman, treasurer or secretary.

Trustees are elected for a 12 month term each year.

What you will be doing

• Familiarising yourself with and supporting the aims and policies of the RSPCA
• Familiarising yourself with the branch rules and following them at all times
• Working with your fellow trustees and branch officers and jointly acting in making decisions for the best interest of the branch and the RSPCA.
• Ensuring the branch meets all the minimum animal welfare standards (MAWS). Where they are not met, working with national RSPCA staff to meet them as soon as practicably possible
• In conjunction with your fellow trustees and Branch Support Specialist (BSS), writing, adopting, monitoring and reviewing a branch development plan setting out the short and long term aims of your branch
• Actively participating in branch committee meetings and attending the branch annual general meeting and regional conference.
• Having an awareness of the outcomes of regional board meetings and supporting regional initiatives.
• Actively promoting and advertising to recruit new branch trustees and volunteers.
• Welcoming new trustees and volunteers to the branch.

The skills you need

• Aged 18 or over
• A current member of the RSPCA (please see RSPCA website for details on how to become a member)
• Able to work with people from all backgrounds and have good interpersonal skills
• Specific skills such as finance, legal, fundraising, project management, business experience, awareness of employment and/or charity legislation can be useful to help ensure we have a sound and robust business model and long term strategic development plan, however they are not essential.
• Commitment, common sense and the ability to be objective is vital
• Creativity, innovation. A person who can bring different experiences and fresh perspectives to the Board and help put those ideas into action

Job Description

A contracted Ministry of Justice Approved Premises and Housing Charity working with released offenders on prison licenses and ex-offenders, to break the revolving door of re-offending, homelessness, and prison. Trustees will use their knowledge, experience, and skills in an environment they may not have previously encountered.

What will you be doing?

Trustees meet every two months with the Senior Management Team (SMT) at the Charity offices to monitor activities, finances, and development of the organisation, giving advice to the SMT and making such decisions as required to ensure the organisation is acting appropriately to meet the requirements of our stakeholders; Ministry of Justice, National Probation Service, Leeds Local Authority and within Charity Commission regulations. 

The Organisation has grown rapidly, and it is essential that the Board of Trustees develops to meet the broad needs of this Charity. 

New Trustees will contribute to the stability and support, advice, and opportunity that the Charity provides to enable vulnerable ex-offenders to do things differently and by offering their experience and specialist knowledge in the areas identified will add depth and breadth to the existing Board of Trustees.

Additional time and specialist advice given as and when required, will enable the SMT to respond effectively to new challenges and external changes as they occur whilst the SMT concentrate on the day-to-day work of the Charity and its staff.

New Trustees must want to make a difference to individual lives and wider society by supporting the SMT and staff to help those vulnerable ex-offenders with very specific and high-risk offending histories, who are being released from long or repeated prison sentences, to believe that they can live positive fulfilling lifestyles.  It is essential that Trustees can view our service users with an open mind.

What are we looking for?

New Trustees are being sought with experience of Accounting and Auditing, Housing and Private Letting Legislation, accessing Funding opportunities, Police or Probation work, Mental Health, or Substance misuse fields.

It is vital that new Trustees have an affinity with the aims of the Charity and appreciate the value of giving individuals a chance to change their future and leave their offending lifestyle behind and the important role that stable accommodation plays in enabling individuals to turn their goals into reality. 

Not all skills need to be specialist and an understanding of the barriers to prison release re-settlement, housing, employment, and stable relationships that many disadvantaged or vulnerable people in society face on a day-to-day basis is helpful.   

Being able to work within a small team of Trustees and provide good interpersonal, supportive, and positive contributions is important.

The development and success of the organisation needs to be supported by maintaining the number of trustees and the range of expertise available to provide effective and sustainable governance going forward.  In an environment where government policies and funding strategies are susceptible to change, a robust Board of Trustees will help to maintain the Charity's ability to provide and sustain an effective service. 

This will thereby continue to increase the availability of stable accommodation with support; service user's ability to secure and maintain stable employment; build new relationships and increase access to healthcare and wellbeing support.  As a result, this can lead to reduced reoffending, reduced prison population and cost to the taxpayer and therefore has potential to actively achieve public protection, reduce the impact of offending on victims, families and children of both victims and perpetrators and local communities.

• Ensure the Board operates effectively in the consideration, iteration and  approval of the strategy proposed by the CEO in support of Thackray Museum of Medicine’s mission and values.
• Ensure, with Trustees, Thackray Museum of Medicine operates efficiently and effectively to fulfil  its objectives.
• Ensure high standards of governance and risk management.

Job title: Chair of the Board of Trustees

Term of office: 3 years minimum, up to a maximum of 6.

Remuneration: Unremunerated. Out of pocket expenses incurred in the course of  duties may be claimed.

Time commitment: 3-4 days per month.
